Valve is pretty high up on the hit lists of PS3 fanboys, due in no small part to the studio's refusal to develop PS3 games. The company has refuted the idea time and time again, but today has come a step closer to admitting that Valve may eventually bring its titles to PS3. In fact, Chet Faliszek is sure it'll happen.
"Before we do anything on the PS3 we need to be able to support it in the right way," explains the Left 4 Dead writer. "But we’ll look at it, and I’m sure down the road we’ll do it."
Valve has often said that it hasn't developed for PS3 because it doesn't want to offer an inferior product like the shoddy Orange Box port, but this is the closest the studio has come to saying that it will seriously look into supporting the system. I'd say PS3 owners have gone on long enough without a chance to enjoy Left 4 Dead, so hopefully Valve will work it out sooner rather than later.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
But I buy Valve games on console anyway, how they update their titles and everything they do for the PC community is just too good to miss.
RRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
If anything, a single blu-ray with a Left 4 Dead 1+2 double pack on the PS3 in the future would be fantastic. Hell, L4D3 might be out by then. :P
its understandable why they havent done so yet, valve rocks either way.
Still, since I think all games should come out on all possible platforms I hope this happens for the PS3-only folks.
Keep in mind, I own a 360 and PS3. My reference for Mod love on PS3 can be sited with UT3, despite it's overall failure (hardly due to mods).
Naturally their lack of PS3 support is due to hurt feelings over personal insults via teh interwebz. :)
@pascuz46
I also got the Orange Box on PS3 as I had no 360 or capable pc rig at the time and while I can see how it was a mildly inferior port due to loading times etc, it was still a great package that I played the hell out of.
Left 4 Dead is one of my favorite games of this generation.
Valve are talented, but the fact they didn't take the opportunity to port Source to PS3 when the Orange Box was released is laziness. By learning PS3 with Source, they'd have much better compatibility with future engines due to expertise with the PS3.
It would only serve to Benefit Valve. And by not doing so, they've cut off a growing market. And let their own games reputation be sullied by a sub-standard port.
It's not "Fanboy" to accuse them of that. I would call it "Fanboy" to dismiss valid concerns and points purely because it's PS3 fans making that point. (Infamy, I'm looking at you.).
The fact they're still using a 6 year old engine for systems they're familiar with is further evidence of laziness, especially when said Engine begun to look aged 2 years ago.
Are Valve respected? Yes
Talented? Yes
Lazy? Yes
Self Destructive? Perhaps a little.
(Before some smart-arse says "Lol, ur anti-valve stfu and play some portal")
1. I had the Orange-box on PS3, and finished it. The port wasn't as bad as most people say, But it will have put people off Valve games.
2. I got HL2 on release day.
3. I got HL1 and Expansions prior to that, I also have it on PS2.
4. I have L4D1 and 2 copies L4D2, (360 and PC).
TL;DR: Learn to read.
As long as it isn't coming out of Gabe's mouth, it ain't really happening. He's the only one who really has a say in these kind of things and as an ex-Windows developer I would excpect him to keep very close to Microsoft because that's where he has his network built up.
If anything, 360 owners can be happy that there are console versions in existence for Valve games at all.
Now, that aside, PS3 owners have every right to be upset with Valve. Upset yes, rabid no. It's perfectly fine that Valve chooses to not support the PS3 for lack of in-house interest. They've been making games for allot longer on PC than on consoles, and given the 360's similarity in architecture, that's fine I get that. What's...absolutely deplorable, is the face Valve and it's employees have put on this debacle.
From the get go, they've never chosen to simply be honest about the system, or reign in the mouths of their employees. If they weren't willing to learn the system, which their inhouse staff isn't. Why all the commenting? Why all the negative press given to something you know so very little about? Why not simply say from the get-go, we don't have the manpower or the in-house interest to learn a third architecture, we may at some point in the future but it's not possible at this time.
Instead, what you have is someone puts a microphone in front of them and asks them a question about the PS3, and they start talking, and talking and talking about this system they haven't invested enough time in, to actually understand it's abilities. Yes, it's more difficult to program for, we know. We've heard that for awhile. Meanwhile Valve, a great...great many other mult-platform devs are managing to do...just fine. To say nothing of the in-house staff @ SCEA.
Point is, I just don't like Valve. I don't like their employees, and I don't like how they run their mouths first then try to smooth over ruffled feathers when they realize they've been giving a continuous finger to an install base that's now grown to over 33 million people.
Bravo Valve. And, as I said, don't bother.
Me, I'm split on Valve. I loved Portal and Team Fortress, though I didn't like Half Life 2 (I'm not a big fan of FPS games, but I do like some a lot). I liked Left 4 Dead, but I didn't feel a need for the sequel. Most of my friends aren't gamers, don't have the game, or we just have different schedules. And that game is a lot different when you are playing solo, or with strangers. That's not really Valve's fault since they were going for a co-op games, but when it comes to dropping $60 I don't care was the goal was, I just care about how much fun I'm going to get from it.
I have a 360 and PS3, so this doesn't affect me much, but I'm happy to see more and more devs work multiplatform, if only so I don't need to buy two consoles next generation too.
Still, why they haven't ported Source over strikes me as really odd. It's not like all their games aren't just small tweaks of the same engine.
I also played The Orange Box on the PS3, and everything but Team Fortress 2 was a good experience. Some of the maps in TF2 are broken, we're getting no patches for the strange delay that happens when you shoot an explosive weapon (e.g. Soldier's rocket launcher, Demoman's grenade/sticky launchers), and we're getting none of the class updates or new maps that are giving Team Fortress 2 a hell of a lot more replay value.
And Valve can be considered lazy in that they are a bit unwilling to study the PS3's architecture for development for it.... But this is the best news about Valve and PS3 development! All we need now... is evidence of a new PS3 title by Valve. =D
Of course by now you'd think they'd know how to make PS3 games more efficiently.
In regards to the topic; VALVe is pretty much the best developer on the face of the planet. Hands down. Their titles should be played by everyone. You are not a true gamer if you purposely limit yourself to a single console for ANY reason.
DO MORE CHORES so mommy buys you the other consoles, FFS!
So Valve developing for the PS3? I'll believe it when I see it.
They OBVIOUSLY love the PC more. Look at all the FREE AWESOME content that PC owners get. I think you could work just a little bit harder at observing things that are right in front of your face.
Just like Halo, it's not a terrible game, just basic and average on all levels. Really not missing out. Valve is probably doing you a favor by lacking the developing talent to figure out the PS3. Saves you a few bucks on just-another-shooter.
Come on man you can't possibly ignore what half life and half life 2 did for shooters back then.
I don't believe they don't care about PC gaming, by controlling Steam, I imagine they have a big interest in keeping PC gaming relevant.
And PS3 people who want Valve games get called fanboys? Gabe Newell is the biggest anti-PS3 fanboy on the planet.
Thank you for bringing my point up for me. Valve may be dedicated to PC gaming. But it doesn't seem that they've really been acting like it as of late. Or perhaps in other words they seem to be putting a little too much emphasis on their support for the 360.
