Don’t expect Valve Corporation to take Left 4 Dead 2 to Sony’s videogame console. In a recent interview with GTTV, Valve managing director Gabe Newell dismissed any and all PS3-related rumors when asked by host Geoff Keighley if the studio was trying to understand or learn how to tackle the shiny black hardware.
“Uh, no. Not in any real way,” Newell says.
At least once a month we hear someone from Valve dismissing the hardware. Painted as hard to develop for, Valve has consistently said it isn’t interested in fiddling with its innards. There’s nothing new here. Valve hates the PS3 and any respectable clown wears a red nose and huge shoes; confirmed. Well, until next month (or a week, whatever) it will remain so. Like a good clown, Valve is constantly entertaining. Pie flinging never gets old, but the custard can get ratty from time to time.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Valve just port games to 360 on a 5 year old engine.
They don't have the ability.
Way to fanboy...
Additionally, early in the GTTV interview, he apologized for the poor Orange Box PS3 port.
The clutching for page hits is so transparent lol!
+1 to Shadowii
If people stop asking them they'll stop answering the question. The only reason he was asked is to stoke puerile animosity.
Ultimately it's Valve's prerogative to spend it's development budget however it chooses. It isn't a publicly funded organisation.
Easiest answer? Play Valve games on the PC you're probably posting on. They aren't system killers. Or put bootcamp on your Mac if you haven't already.
That "5 year old engine" some of you moronically deride has been optimized so well over time that you can probably even run Half Life 2 on a 386. Might be running at 15 frames a second, but you could probably run it.
They are the ultimate fanboys basking in Microsoft's deep ever so deeeeep pockets of cash. Kind of nice in this economy right Valve?
Besides I've got Nazi Zombies CoD:W@W here on the PS3.
Also, The Mercenaries Mode from RE5 too.
And this putting down of speculation to develop for Sony. Turns me off anyways even if they were to do a port.
Yeah, you can run valve games on almost anything, but the Source engine has a lot of problems. TF2 has no dual core support, or very shitty support at best. And it inexplicably pushes whatever core it's running on to the absolute limit. HL2 has some ridiculous stuttering problems, as well as frequent long load times. So yeah, it's a good engine, but it's not the ultra optimized god engine everyone makes it out to be.
the thing is that they have a very simple philosophy which relies on constant community-company interaction.
and the ps3 puts big fucking barriers to that kind of game design approach.
they gave it a try with orange box, it it didn't work out for them.
sometimes its just better to not deliver at all than wasting months of work only to deliver it poorly.
From a buisness look, they don't need to put things on the PS3. They make enough from the PC alone, let alone the 360. From a customer point, saying that Valve hate their customers is wrong. It just seems to be a case of "We want to, but we can't".
Also a big LOL at Valve being money whores, they frequently give out amazing free content all the time.
you gotta be joking.
Honestly, Valve has been working on PC for a long time. The Xbox 360 is like a PC, so it is probably easy for them to code for. They already normally take REALLY long to make games anyway; if they had to learn a new system it would probably take even longer. It's too bad for PS3 fans, but if you are posting here you have a PC, so there you go (and you'll save $10 and get content for free that we 360 fans have to pay for. That should get your PS3 fanboy boners up).
Fuck Valve.
Valve is hardly an "exclusive" developer. What about the games exclusive to PS3. Are those developers "lazy"?
Let them, the more stupid they make themselves look the better.
I totally agree that this thing needs to die, it's getting more attention than it deserves.
Just like John Carmack is 'lazy' to have the frame rate running a bit slower on the ps3 for a game that isn't coming out for ANOTHER YEAR!!!!
All half life games are 66% off steam at the moment btw. Get all Half life 2 games for £6.45. Bargain. Valve are so lazy they can't even be arsed to make any money off their games.
If anything this is a smart decision by Valve. Their titles would get lost in the shuffle within the library of the PS3.
:P
as to valve not developing for the ps3 i dont see it as a huge issue certainly not one for people to be wailing and gnashing their teeth over.
Valve make good games not great games and as has already been mentioned by a couple of posters, if people really want to play them they can use their pc's it's not as if the system requirements for their games are excessive.
As for me personally i have played all of valve's games apart from L4D and the half life 2 eps and the only one that that i felt compelled to play through to the end was portal, none of the others could hold my interest for more than a couple of hours, I have not even botherd about l4d on the pc.
Anyway sorry for the long post my final point is Valve is\are? a private company and can develop for who they like so people really should just enjoy the great games that are out on the PS3 and stop crying just because people with a 360 can play a few games that they cant, but i guess that is to much to expect from some/most? people.
Peace Out
Same shit, different day.
...no.... no, wait... *hangs head in shame* i still love you valve :'(
Developers are always saying the PS3 needs to be approached differently to the 360, which shares many similarities with PC. I'm guessing they've looked into it and simply decided that they would take a big hit to profitability to port their engine to PS3 or have to release a substandard product.
Their games are perfection, but when it takes THAT long, go PC, port to 360, and maybe get an external studio to port to PS3. At some point.
Unless their PC is barely able to run the original monkey island.
