Valve still not interested in the PS3 photo

Don’t expect Valve Corporation to take Left 4 Dead 2 to Sony’s  videogame console. In a recent interview with GTTV, Valve managing director Gabe Newell dismissed any and all PS3-related rumors when asked by host Geoff Keighley if the studio was trying to understand or learn how to tackle the shiny black hardware.

“Uh, no. Not in any real way,” Newell says.

At least once a month we hear someone from Valve dismissing the hardware. Painted as hard to develop for, Valve has consistently said it isn’t interested in fiddling with its innards. There’s nothing new here. Valve hates the PS3 and any respectable clown wears a red nose and huge shoes; confirmed. Well, until next month (or a week, whatever) it will remain so. Like a good clown, Valve is constantly entertaining. Pie flinging never gets old, but the custard can get ratty from time to time.

Well, they asked, so he answered honestly. Maybe if people stopped asking them (when they've clearly stated they aren't going to work for the PS3), this wouldn't be coming up every month. Hmm?

Hopefully, Sony will stop making the their consoles "intentionally" hard to develop for in the future.

You need skill to make a PS3 game.

Valve just port games to 360 on a 5 year old engine.
They don't have the ability.

To be fair about the "At least once a month we hear someone from Valve dismissing the hardware", Newell was asked straight up about whether or not Valve was working on the PS3. He didn't dismiss it out of hand and gave a pretty straight-forward answer.

Additionally, early in the GTTV interview, he apologized for the poor Orange Box PS3 port.

I agree they should just stop asking. I think partly this was a question to elicit a response from fanboys of both consoles to get some pageviews. Valve has stated in the past they they aren't working with the PS3 and have no plans to, so why ask? How about you let them do what they want to do and ask relevant questions instead?

The clutching for page hits is so transparent lol!

+1 to Shadowii

If people stop asking them they'll stop answering the question. The only reason he was asked is to stoke puerile animosity.
Ultimately it's Valve's prerogative to spend it's development budget however it chooses. It isn't a publicly funded organisation.

Good to see the Sony fan boys out already today.

Easiest answer? Play Valve games on the PC you're probably posting on. They aren't system killers. Or put bootcamp on your Mac if you haven't already.

That "5 year old engine" some of you moronically deride has been optimized so well over time that you can probably even run Half Life 2 on a 386. Might be running at 15 frames a second, but you could probably run it.

Sounds to me Gabe & his team are notoriously lazy...

They are the ultimate fanboys basking in Microsoft's deep ever so deeeeep pockets of cash. Kind of nice in this economy right Valve?

Besides I've got Nazi Zombies CoD:W@W here on the PS3.
Also, The Mercenaries Mode from RE5 too.

And this putting down of speculation to develop for Sony. Turns me off anyways even if they were to do a port.

Yeah, you can run valve games on almost anything, but the Source engine has a lot of problems. TF2 has no dual core support, or very shitty support at best. And it inexplicably pushes whatever core it's running on to the absolute limit. HL2 has some ridiculous stuttering problems, as well as frequent long load times. So yeah, it's a good engine, but it's not the ultra optimized god engine everyone makes it out to be.

there is no hate, they could only get profit making there games available on ps3.

the thing is that they have a very simple philosophy which relies on constant community-company interaction.
and the ps3 puts big fucking barriers to that kind of game design approach.

they gave it a try with orange box, it it didn't work out for them.

sometimes its just better to not deliver at all than wasting months of work only to deliver it poorly.

Valve are known for making great games because, if they know something will turn out semi-bad, they don't try it. They don't take risks, which a positive and a negative.

From a buisness look, they don't need to put things on the PS3. They make enough from the PC alone, let alone the 360. From a customer point, saying that Valve hate their customers is wrong. It just seems to be a case of "We want to, but we can't".

Not shocked, I don't know why these journalist keep asking, as far as I can tell no one has really been clamouring for this game, if it comes it comes and if not there are 565534567 other multiplayer shooters in existence that want ps3 owners money so we will give it to them. I have still yet to see anything from this series that makes it stand out from all the other shooters to date.

Gabe sucks man!!! Every practical business man/woman wants to lose precious time and money making a game for a system that should’ve been made more developer friendly to begin with!!! What a lazy dick dude!! Just imagine how many fewer games he’d sell if only he’d bust his lazy ass and spend a shitload more money resulting in an inferior game port that we’d complain and bother him about all day in web-blogs!! Life sucks man! Gabe sucks! Life + Gabe = suck!!!

To all the PS3 whiners who actually pretend Valce games suck 'cause they aren't on the PS3: Wanna talk about Kojima, Insomniac, or Sucker Punch? They don't make 360 games either, which is certified proof that every game they've ever made is a waste of time and crappy, right? Get over yourselves you self-entitled fanboys. The PS3 has more friends than the 360, and for increasingly less convincing reasons, so you can stop complaining so ignorantly.

Exclusives are exclusives. Just because the system you DONT own has an exclusive doesn't mean the game automatically will be sucky with "lazy developers." I don't have a PS3, but I think inFamous, Uncharted, and LBP are fantastic games (and God of War 3 should be fantastic), but you don't see me yelling that Insomniac or sucker Punch is "lazy" for not coding for the 360.
Honestly, Valve has been working on PC for a long time. The Xbox 360 is like a PC, so it is probably easy for them to code for. They already normally take REALLY long to make games anyway; if they had to learn a new system it would probably take even longer. It's too bad for PS3 fans, but if you are posting here you have a PC, so there you go (and you'll save $10 and get content for free that we 360 fans have to pay for. That should get your PS3 fanboy boners up).

As far as the question goes, he answered honestly to a stupid question that gets way to much attention. Whatever happened to a private developer not wanting to do something? Did we all forget that they have the freedom to do so? PS3 fanboys need to get over it, if Valve doesn't want to develop for the PS3, then just accept it. Don't make fun of them for choosing to do something. Will they make more money? Definitely. But if they don't want to, that's their choice.

I totally agree that this thing needs to die, it's getting more attention than it deserves.

PS3 owners need to write off Valve like 360 owners have written off Naughty Dog and Insomniac. Yes, technically they could make games for the other system, but that ain't gonna.

Oh yes, the company who makes some of the best games in the world is 'lazy'. The man trying to put sign language into a video game is 'lazy'.

Just like John Carmack is 'lazy' to have the frame rate running a bit slower on the ps3 for a game that isn't coming out for ANOTHER YEAR!!!!

All half life games are 66% off steam at the moment btw. Get all Half life 2 games for £6.45. Bargain. Valve are so lazy they can't even be arsed to make any money off their games.

Other than the lack of updates, I still don't see what people are complaining about the Orange Box on the PS3. No problems whatsoever on my end.

If anything this is a smart decision by Valve. Their titles would get lost in the shuffle within the library of the PS3.

hi first ever post, joined a while back but my pc has been borked for months and i've been using the crap ps3 browser and i couldnt bring myself to try and use that onscreen kb to type, PC is fixed now and i get to use a real kb yay!

as to valve not developing for the ps3 i dont see it as a huge issue certainly not one for people to be wailing and gnashing their teeth over.

Valve make good games not great games and as has already been mentioned by a couple of posters, if people really want to play them they can use their pc's it's not as if the system requirements for their games are excessive.

As for me personally i have played all of valve's games apart from L4D and the half life 2 eps and the only one that that i felt compelled to play through to the end was portal, none of the others could hold my interest for more than a couple of hours, I have not even botherd about l4d on the pc.

Anyway sorry for the long post my final point is Valve is\are? a private company and can develop for who they like so people really should just enjoy the great games that are out on the PS3 and stop crying just because people with a 360 can play a few games that they cant, but i guess that is to much to expect from some/most? people.

Peace Out

At this point the only reason people keep asking Valve about PS3 is for an excuse to post a fanboy baiting story to bump up the page hits.

Developers are always saying the PS3 needs to be approached differently to the 360, which shares many similarities with PC. I'm guessing they've looked into it and simply decided that they would take a big hit to profitability to port their engine to PS3 or have to release a substandard product.

It takes VALVe incredibly long to create their games.

Their games are perfection, but when it takes THAT long, go PC, port to 360, and maybe get an external studio to port to PS3. At some point.

Wow. Look at all these haters. I'm sure Valve has nothing against the PS3, it most likely just boils down to basic economics. Their research probably told them that the development costs > possible profit. They might have figured that hiring more people dedicated to learning the PS3 and man hours trying to make it work perfectly would just be counter-productive to their profit goals. No need to get all butt-hurt.
