Valve's Newell wants to make a Wii game photo

In an interview with VG247, Valve Managing Director and co-founder Gabe Newell revealed that the company is interested in developing a Wii title. Instead of spitting out a line talking about innovation and the greatness of the Wii, Newell decided to go the obvious route. He decided to talk money.

We’re always interested [in making an MMO], but let me put it this way: I would love to do a Wii game, and how many Wii games have we shipped?
Newell was originally asked about the potential of making a Wii MMO, but as you can see, he easily pushed it aside. My guess is that we’ll see a Valve MMO in the future, possibly whenever World of Warcraft finally starts to lose its steam within this century. I wouldn’t exactly count on something as groundbreaking as an MMO on the Wii anytime soon.

A Wii MMO would be stretching it, and would call for a total reworking of the Online service from Nintendo, which isn't going to happen anytime soon.

You know, a good idea would be to let Valve handle Nintendo's online service, at least for the Wii/next Nintendo Hand-held. They could call it Steampunk or something. It could work.

But on the point of a game, Valve did hint at looking at Portal for the Wii.

Counterstrike 2 for Wii confirmed?

Afterall, for all the Wii's shortcomings in satisfying "teh hardcore" ™ I can personally attest that FPS controls like those found in Metroid Prime 3 bear a goldmine of entertainment.

This Newell man hates the ps3.

Wii MMO: Simultaneous wiggling for the masses.

2D isometric tile based MMO maybe? Wouldn't have to be too shiny and technical. Regardless of what it ends up being, Valve won't release it until it's fun and worthwhile, you can count on that.

More like Gabe wants to eat some Wii games.

@Magesx: I see what you did there. Gabe is a fat guy, and you made a reference to eating, which is what fat people do.

When are you and your comedy routine going on tour?

That's nice. I still don't see why Valve hates the PS3 so much.

Especially when Valve's strategy seems much more akin to Sony's than MS's or Nintendo's.

As long as it's not just a port of Portal, I'll be cool with it.

@Magesx

That was awfully disappointing.

Come on, Newell. Why the hell not just port Portal, Half Life 1 and 2 to Wii? Wii owners would love those with motion control.

On top of that, Wii will soon be indulging in Dead Rising> While Dead Rising, House of the Dead etc are old games, they are still finding an audience. Some Valve love can join that too.

Any source game from Half Life 2 to Left 4 Dead will run on Wii specs. The source engine is so not demanding that Half Life 2 ran on the Xbox on high with 60 fps constant, now where is My Half Life 2: Wii Version.

yeah good for newell because the wii is a cheap console and it deserve cheap games ... because it's too hard for valve to make games on a real console like the PS3

@Quest, QFT!

@Brad, I don't recall him saying it's anything about money, he just said that he hasn't made any Wii games yet. I personally think your jumping to conclusions when your saying that it will be another mini-game comp? Plus, Valve doesn't seem like the type to get lazy and release shovelware. That just seems above the people that made portal.

They don't state the Wii game as an MMO. Gabe just puts the two things together at the end as a joke, as it would be seemingly impossible.

That's odd. I remember Gabe saying in an interview that he really didn't like the Wii. Guess he changed.
