Valve: 'PS3 is incredibly important to us' photo

At gamescom, Valve project manager Erik Johnson is looking to make nice with PS3 owners after their release of the turd version of Orange Box, which got the shaft in everything from DLC to framerate.

"PS3 is incredibly important to us," he said. "We don't feel that the PS3 users had the Valve experience that we like to deliver.

"So it that case it's incredibly important to us; we kind of fix everything wrong in the products that we delivered before for the PS3, which we thought were good but weren't quite the Valve experience."

Now that their engine is good to go on the PS3, things will work out nicely. Beyond that, CVG says Johnson noted that several PS3 veterans are working on the platform now:

"We have a handful of people who have a very strong PS3 background. They worked on a bunch of the early PS3 games and they're big fans of the platform. So they're really excited and jumped immediately at the chance to get Source up and running in Portal 2 on PS3."

It's all good now.

This version might eclipse the 360 version(for me anyway) because of the steam support. I can't wait to see how they integrate steam onto the triple,

This makes me incredibly happy. My fanboy-ism was always so torn when G. Newell and Co. dissed PS3 at every chance they got. I love Valve almost as much as I love Sony (if not more). Now that the two are in cahoots, my joy is nearly palpable.

Now if only Blizzard and Sony would...hmm.

My cynicism has me concerned about the Steam integration. The last thing I want in my console games is Steam activation. That's a long way down the slippery slope, but now that publishers are cockpunching used game buyers for multi-player, it's not TOO unrealistic.

If it's technically sound (which I assume it will be), there's no doubt that PS3 will be the way to go over Xbox 360. The Steam support on consoles is a very cool idea.

With that said, PC will still always be the first and best choice.

I know Source is a good engine and it's been around for a while, and I understand that business-wise it makes sense for Valve to keep using it, but when the hell are they ever going to make something new? Their games are quite frankly ugly looking to me now. I mean, they're not bad, but they look kind of outdated to my eyes.

I guess in like 5 more years then?

Yeah they are nice but not fresh, HL2 is awesome and all that but they havn't done much to change the look/style of their games in a while.

It was The Orange Box that made me drop the PS3 for a 360. If Portal 2 can produce more with the PS3, then it looks like I'll own another Sony machine.

This makes it sound like the 360 version got DLC, which, I can assure you, has not happened. Hell, you still get shot through the wall on Dustbowl in TF2.

I didn't see anything wrong with the PS3 Orange Box except long load times, which was present when I played HL2 on a PC a few years ago. Sure the framerate dropped sometimes, but it was usually the high quality picture you expect from a Valve game.

@Nzdjh- I whole heartily agree. People complain about issues on the consoles which just aren't present in the PC version since it was designed for PC first. They're not terrible ports but they lack the one thing Valve has built it's lasting legacy on: The Modding Community. Games liek Starcraft II are bringing it back and hopefully we can one day see the POWA of the PC!!! -insert MWAHHAHA here-

Well of course but people are stubborn with their platforms of choice. Over a course of time even a person on a Burger King fry cook's salary can get every single gaming platform in a couple years no sweat. The only thing that stops them is platform loyalty.

You may think "that's bullshit" but I guarantee you I can in an hour find 15 people who think in a very real way that "The PS3 doesn't have many games!", "The 360 is unplayable!" or "The PC costs $2000."

If anything Sony needs the most of right now on its PS3 is some competent network people and Valve knows all about them networks and how best to use them. If Sony is all good with Steam running freely on their system with not hindrance then let us hope they will allow more developer and third party companies to try and give Sony that much needed support it has been lacking since its PS2 heydays.

Once again, Microsoft has shot themselves in the foot by not allowing Valve more room to update, and as such they've lost out on exclusives yet again.

My favourite Xbox games are Left 4 Dead and Mass Effect 2. Now my Xbox is quickly becoming the red headed step child.

@ Excel-2010: Sure, it looks fine. But other, newer games blow any Valve game out of the water at least in terms of visuals. I'm not one to judge a game based on it's looks, but with the FPS genre I feel graphics are extremely important for some reason.

Wii gamers had better get another system, Mr. Dent. Have you seen any Valve games that would even run on the Wii? And even if they could down port it for Wii, would the demographic be there to justify the sales? No on both accounts.

Practically anything prior to Half-Life 2.

Half-Life 1, Counter-Strike, Team Fortress Classic, Day of Defeat, Ricochet, Deathmatch Classic, yadda yadda you get the idea.

Valve finally bites the multiplatform console bullet only later to throw it up after what made them special in the PC space has now been watered down.

I wish people could tell the difference between poly counts/artwork and engines.

Lead & Gold was done on the diesel engine which is 10 years old along with bionic commando and g.r.a.w 1&2.

Most engines are pretty modular and allow for various custom shaders to be made. To blame the look of a game solely on an engine just shows ignorance and when I hear it come from a reviewer I simultaneously shudder and feel a huge desire to slap them.

In short, to say a game looks dated is perfectly acceptable but to attribute it to an engine such as source just makes you look silly.

I "would" get it on pc, but I can't be trusted with pc's, I do stuff I'm not suppose to and disregard safety and KILL every pc I own within a year.

I can't justify spending any reasonable amount of money on something that won't last a year before it's virus infected and has a fucked up broken OS.

That's just my inability to use a pc responsibly, that and the fact that the ps3 does everything I want gaming and otherwise means I'll stick to the ps3.

Can I haz left 4 dead now plz Gabe?
