Valve: Portal 2 is our best game ever photo

Half-Life 2? Rubbish. Left 4 Dead? A stain on the history of videogames. Valve has declared that Portal 2 is its greatest triumph yet, even though it's not even finished. Speaking with 1UP, Gabe Newell stated that it's "pretty clear" to his internal team that the long-awaited sequel is absolutely amazing.

"One of the nice things about The Orange Box was it allowed us to try out a couple of different things, and Portal really seemed to resonate," explains Newell. "We got the signals that we wanted -- this is what people liked; this is what people didn't like. And to us, it was like, 'OK now we know how to take this big,' so that's what we're going to do with Portal 2.

"Oh Portal 2's great. It's the best game we've ever done."

Usually I'd warn against hype, but if any company is good at making games live up to the PR nonsense, it's Valve. I can't wait to see what the team manages to do with Portal 2. If it's the best thing Valve's ever done, it's probably going to be really, really good.

I enjoyed the original Portal and certainly look forward to the sequel. I am a bit more of a fan of the Half-Life series, but perhaps I'm just missing HL due to the decided lack of well-developed plots and large single-player campaigns in most recent FPS'.

Its the newest game they have. It better be the best game they have done. Also, would you buy it if they were like "Meh, its an ok game, i like the first half life the best."

Sold.

Also, I hate this phrase, but "inb4" x1251's anti-Valve horseshit.

I'm a bit scared at how much BETTER it can get. Seriously, how much more? I can understand the writing side of it because they have more room to work with. That Portalling mechanic is gonna get an extra boost, ESPECIALLY with Co-Op being announced.

It's funny because if you've ever played good mods from the PC version, there were puzzles in there that made you Portal in ways you never even thought of outside the main game. I hope Portal 2 has been inspired by that.

I can't wait to see what puzzles they've come up with for co-op. I can't wait to see any of it tbh.

I love portal, it was short, sweet, and very funny. But I have a hard time beliving that portal 2 is going to be anywhere as thoughtful, smart, or as well writen then half life. It makes me feel like they kinda gave up on half life like they don't seem to care about it anymore. Maybe I'm thinking to much about it I don't know.

I'm very interested. There is so much more they can do with the story in Portal, though honestly, the original Portal cliffhanger ending was one of the best, most memorable ever (considering the music, as well). I believe they've already mentioned that multiple characters will appear in the game, which no doubt means that the story is going to open up to a much wider degree. I just want my pleasantly insane AI back.

I still wish they'd just publish whatever build of Half-Life: Ep. 3 they've got right now so we can all get on with our damn lives. Gordon can teleport a nuke into the combine's home planet. It's fine, I'm not expecting Shakespeare.

From just the few snippets of dialog from the Game Informer article it seems funny/creepy again. If they can hold it longer than 4 hours then why wouldn't it be that many times better than portal or any other game valve has done?

I believe Gabriel.

I just can't be excited for this. The idea of Portal 2 just feels wrong.
If any publisher can make it work, its Valve, but unless Portal 2 is beyond perfect, then I think I'll probably be disappointed.

If that's the case, then HalfLife 3 will come as well. I bet that a new "next gen" engine will come when a new full Half Life game comes, but I think Portal 2 will use Source.

Valve sucks.

By Fanboy Jim's own reasoning (see any response to "it's only possible on PS3"), if you can't figure out to develop for a different console...even a port...then you suck.

Yeah...don't care, Valve. Go ahead and DON'T hire someone to port your crap game to PS3. It won't matter either way to PS3 users.

Question: If you were to starve Gabe Newell and Jim Sterling for two days and then put them in a room with naught but a single Twinkie in the middle...who would come out alive??

I have yet to play a Valve game I didn't like. I doubt this will buck the trend. But if Portal 2 can become their best game ever, I'd be very pleased. And Gabe...

EPISODE 3!

Thanks.

@TheGlue29

There are a lot of developers who choose to make games for one console over another. Does that mean they all suck?

Should all PC/360 developers be required to port their games to the Wii, as well, just to proof that they don't "suck"?

You're only pissed because in addition to not developing for the PS3, Newell has said some incredibly inflammatory things about your favorite console. Get over it.

I loved Portal as nothing more than a series of brain-bogglers, brilliantly conceived but deceptively simple. It went rapidly downhill for me when it started bringing in a plot of sorts. I've no interest in an 'epic' Portal. All I want is more puzzles, some amusingly deranged side-comments from GLaDOS and, of course, 'Still Alive'.
