Valve: People always complain photo

Left 4 Dead 2 has become inextricably linked with moaning and boycotts ever since it was announced at E3. While some at Valve may have been surprised by the sudden backlash from self-professed fans, writer Chet Faliszek was reasonably well prepared.

"I once joked that we could put $20 in a box and charge $10 for it, and someone’s going to complain," says Faliszek. "And that’s just fine - that’s just the way it is.

"We never thought, 'We need to say that we’re going to keep updating Left 4 Dead,' because that was always our plan. Briefly before that [E3] we’d already posted on our blog about the updates that were coming. We didn’t think people would think, 'Oh wait, now they’re not going to do that stuff they talked about'. Yes, we are."

Faliszek adds that perhaps Valve could have made it more clear, but that people would probably have whined either way: "So, there’s that -- taking the leap to do that clearly. Honestly though, I don’t know if that would have made a difference. I think there are just a lot of people who didn’t listen to that."

Valve's biggest mistake was spoiling consumers. It's kind of humorous that, just because Valve didn't treat its customers like sh*t in the same way that many big publishers do, they are now receiving the most backlash just for acting like a game company. Perhaps the lesson here is to never be nice to people.

Either way, I'm still fairly certain that well over half those boycotters will be playing Left 4 Dead 2 when it releases, bending over and taking a nice big salty one just like always.

Who the fuck cares? I'll be buying the damn game. Simply put, I rarely play one game for more than a few months, regardless of multiplayer quality.

I got a lot out of L4D for my 60 bucks and I will gladly fork down another 60 bucks this year for what appears to be an even larger game.

Compared to most games, you get a lot for your dollar from a Valve game right out of the box.

Left 4 Dead still has not justified it's own price tag, thus I will not buy Left 4 Dead 2, as it was a sub-par game experience.

Fact: Destructoid has posted more articles about this topic than there are members of the boycott Steam group. Milk it some more boys!

Copy and paste press releases, sprinkle biased comments about whiners and the superiority of apathy; Profit!

@googoogaagaa

Jim is a good comedy writer, but he doesn't seem to have any understanding of how to be consistent. Most of his articles are tired cliches of gamer stereotypes that make him appear oblivious to the real discussion.

Let's get this straight, Valve clarifies (or PR backpedals, who knows) and will now fulfill its promises on L4D. It takes them a month to make a simple, yet vague clarification? This makes the fans who were upset wrong how? I don't get it.

Oh, I get it, it is funny because for your hundredth article you made an ironic strawman of people who disagree with you, and then called them names (not because you are actually ignorant but just because you are a hilarious internet character)! Haha! Thanks Jim!

LOL. You are attacking Jim for poking fun at idiots like you who complain about a sequel to a great game? Valve has annouced that they still plan to patch/update the game, which as I can see from the Steam news and updates that they are keeping faith in that promise. Most of the people here fucking complaining about L4D2 have played the original for over hundreds of hours or have played it for 5 and just want something to argue about. The game is coming out. There is nothing any of the boycotters can do about it. I understand the anger but move on and accept another great installment in Valve's great collection.

That's just a pig-headed comment. You didn't do anything of the sort in L4D. You did that with the Orange Box; indeed the greatest deal in gaming history. With L4D you've had us pay 60 dollars for arguably very little content, even if it is to be updated, and even if it has tons of resale value. And you know what, most of us were satisfied.

But L4D 2 is scheduled for THIS YEAR. Which looks really fucking fishy, considering this companies track record. And, which game are we going to play after its release? If L4D is just inferior afterwards, people are going to be pissed because they payed 60 dollars for that shit less than a year ago. If L4D 2 sucks, then people are going to be disappointed.

Honestly, how could Valve had not seen this coming?

Also, if they don't think they owe their fans, then they're sadly mistaken.

Also, Destructoid: stop feeding this foolishness. You have to know where we're coming from at this point, and our points are for the most part articulate and valid, like the guy's above. Just tell us about L4D2 without mentioning this crap, for the love of god.

@Sharpless

I agree that L4D2's content - 5 campaigns, new characters, weapons, etc. - warrants a new game.

But what if - and just hear me out - what if Valve had set out to make the DLC they said they would?

It's not like the DLC piled up and they said, "Whoa, guys... there's just so much, let's make a game out of all of this!".

http://www.thatvideogameblog.com/2009/06/10/valve-writer-l4d2-has-too-much-new-stuff-to-be-an-add-on/

No, from the start they set out to make a new game. If they had planned to make and release movies, characters, zombies as DLC as they said they would, 5 campaigns would not have piled up - they wouldn't be in a position where the content couldn't reasonably be released as DLC.

So they're "stuck" - they've got to release L4D2. Fine. I just won't buy it. I'll continue to play the game I bought in November, and support the community and stand by that product.

Oh all you whiners shut up, you sound like little kids who are angry that they didn't get that extra scoop of ice cream.

Valve is one of the greatest gaming companies out there, and you bitch and moan about the release of new content, ALOT of new content. So what its going to be another $60, if they charged that much for the first one, what do you expect?

They're not stupid, and they're not a charity. They are making games, whole ones I might add, to generate income. All DLC is for the sole purpose to make the fanbase happy and so they like the company, and so that everyone looks towards valve for that latest game.

If you really think they would have released 2-4 more campaigns, or more multiplayer aspects, plus the updates that are promised for l4d2, in ONE DLC, you're obviously deluded. Stop whining, buy the new game. Deal with it, save up some moeny, and quit being butthurt over the fact that they wanted a little extra just this once.

And all this is just more publicity for the new game, so you guys are just burying yourself. Valve is probably loving this.

I'm not saying that there should be a boycott (because I really don't care), but it's funny how some companies can be the brunt of stale jokes about horse armor DLC for years after the fact, and others can be revered no matter what they do.

So, let me get this straight...you guys don't think these angry "boycotters" should be so upset, so you get all upset and self-righteous about THEM being upset and self-righteous?

Alright, then.

Why we continue to get in these situations where people get so fired up about what other people think or do and don't want to play/buy is beyond me. Who gives a shit if some people don't want L4D2? We're going to complain about them complaining, then?

And then, of course, I'll complain about you guys complaining about them complaining. The circle is complete.

Whoa, whoa - never be nice to people? People buy their games because they're one of the few publishers that seem to feel responsible to their consumers. If they weren't nice to us, nobody would feel compelled to be, and what type of industry do you think this would become?

L4D2 must have too much WoW-gayness. Or something. I guess?

My take on it is that, because Valve is pretty consistent about being not shitty and putting out awesome stuff, people have simply come to expect this from them, and instead of being even the least bit grateful that it's awesome stuff and not shitty, they are jaded by it and instead simply feel the need to find ludicrous shit to whine and cry about. Because that is the wont of denizens of the Internet, in general.

People can be so goddamn retarded sometimes. Evidence? The first post in this thread, and those nodding their heads in agreement with it.

LOL Valve. How about if they made HL2 good like HL1 was eh? And not ruin the mood and weapons and turn it into a generic dystopian scifi setting?

At least we're getting a fanmade HL1 source version soon...

I wonder if these same people would go back to McDonalds now to ask for a the difference for all the big macs now that it's like 2 for 3.50. Say yes a million times you'll be a great person, say no once and all that good is gone. Wooficer and those cut from the same cloth all feel entitled. Entitled for the DLC to be announced before the sequel, it needing to be free, and the most ridiculous one "to be more forthcoming with your future plans". Take a step back and look at all the games valve has put out and name one that does not have a strong, dedicated, loyal community behind it. As a matter a fact valve has said "We are gonna make new and cool things for X game. Here are the tools we are using, you use them as well and make your own along with us," but for some reason people lost focus of that. I'm not a valve fan boy though I do enjoy their games but look at what valve has done for communities in terms of gaming and you'll see that all these people with misplaced anger may have good points but are acting bratty. Consumers just do that. Consume.. nothing else.. Those whole truly love the game, will keep the game alive and create because valve has given us the tools to do so. Yeah, Valve, you're real assholes..

I can't think of an appropriate Valve series that works as a test case: never before have they put out a multiplayer-centric title and followed it up with a sequel a year later. However, they've got the PR going today and have suggested they're working on two specific features that would largely negate the "releasing 2 undercuts the value of 1" argument. Also, your analogy about hamburgers doesn't fit because when you buy a big mac you're buying a well-defined product. When you buy L4D you're generally buying something harder to grasp: the internet-based "community features" over time. When your expectations (fueled very directly by marketing) don't match up with reality I think you should make it known to the creator. Just as you should make it known if your hamburger had a fingernail in it (not if they raised the price on future hamburgers, that has no appreciable effect on your previous hamburger experience).
