Ever since Left 4 Dead 2's announcement and the nerd rage of supposed "fans" who can't bear to see a sequel to a game they love, one thing has been consistently thrown in my face -- a quote from Gabe Newell, claiming that Left 4 Dead 1 would get a load of support from Valve. Now I have a quote of my own to throw at the boycotters -- Gabe Newell stating that those original plans aren't changing.
"Doing a sequel in one year is new for Valve. But providing ongoing support for our titles after the initial launch isn't -- it has been part of our philosophy since Half-Life was released ten and half years ago," says Newell. "We see no reason to change that and will continue to support the over three million customers in the L4D community.
"Some in the community are concerned that the announcement of L4D2 implied a change in our plans for L4D1. We aren't changing our plans for L4D1."
Patches, mod support, and new content all remain on the cards for the original game, which is great news for those who currently claim to be boycotting L4D2. I say "claim," because I severely doubt that the 25,000-strong army of moral indignance will stick to their guns with it actually comes out. It'll be fun to see just how many crumble and reneg when the game hits later this year.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I recommend giving them dunce caps and putting them in the corner.
Look what you have done Valve, you've made a Frenchman cry.
Buy it , play it , enjoy it and STFU.
This, my 25,000 friends, is now your turn to be called 'A douchebag'.
they might as well just call FIREGOD proof
Because I'm broke.....
So far, L4D has added:
One Survival Map
Survival Mode, which ships with L4D2
So far, Valve has promised:
Weapons
Characters
Levels for Campaign
New Campaigns
"Similar DLC to TF2"
This is what I was told by Chet F. at E3:
"One more minor update is coming for L4D"
So basically, they have a few months before L4D2 to make good on their original idea. I wouldn't even care if this "forthcoming" DLC Gabe seems to think is coming is paid DLC, but something tells me it's not going to be as big as anyone thinks.
*ZING*
They don;t have only a couple months, because they said they would support it AFTER the release of L4D2. Missed that part i guess? Need to check your glasses prescription methinks.
Portal was about 30 dollars at launch, L4D cost almost 70. DUMB
One of the biggest complaints was "we were promised L4D1 support." How is an entire post on that complaint "ignoring" it?
I originally heard that they were going to support this before a sequel, so that's what I'm talking about there.
Other than that, I was still told that there was only one more minor update coming for L4D, regardless of the release of L4D2. I don't need to check my glasses, because this is what I was told. I could check my ears I guess?
@Kid
C'mon dude. I'll buy it too, but 1 minor update so far? 1? You gotta have more self respect than that. It's not "unrealistic" to ask for this.
I still think a lot of L4D2 stuff should have been in L4D; the relatively small amount of content has been a criticism since the game came out.
Umm, Counter Strike?
I didn't realize "rage" and "amusement" were the same thing.
I'm eager to see how much meaningful content gets added in as L4D2 draws closer, and how they will keep the community together without people having to buy the sequel.
Valve stuffed up by giving the former Turtle Rock Studios too much freedom and they turned out not to give a shit about Valve's 'philosophy' in game development, having no trouble doing a u-turn and walking all over thhe stuff Gabe Newell was talking about in the run up to release. Now Valve have to try and work things out.
I've no doubt that left to their own devices Valve South would be churning L4D games out every 12 months and we wouldn't even see the support that's been provided thus far.
Counter Strike was a mod: it didn't go retail until 2000, 2 years after the original game was released. Also, when CS first came out, it was released as an "orange box" of sorts, bundled with Team Fortress Classic, Opposing Force multiplayer, and the WantedHL.
All the comparisons to Portal 2 and past Valve experiences don't make any sense: a full retail sequel of L4D2 is their first experience into this foray.
Valve is going to sell millions of L4D2, they'll eventually come out with L4D updates, and everyone will be happy. I just don't get what the big deal is. Though maybe we should get Woodard and Bernstein on this scandal?
You do know what the word rage means, don't you? Let's not try and redefine the meaning of words, just so you can pretend you did something clever.
I should not be surprised that even after hearing that Valve will still be supporting L4D1, people are still bitching.
Release L4D2 in 2010, once the xmas glut of games has passed, and we'll have no problem with it.
Personally, I'm waiting for L4D3 come Xmas '10. :3
Shut up Jim. I'm still boy cotting it for a deserved discount. Even if VALVe are still going to support L4D1 (big suprise here, not, VALVe are awesome) they still announced a sequel to an unfinished game.
Hopefully Jim will make another article blowing the boycott out of proportion so I can tell him to shut up again while I enjoy my UT2004 I bought for 10 quid upon returning UT2003, not trading it in for cash, returning.
A "deserved" discount? What the hell do you deserve one for? Because you were silly enough to buy a game not based on what was on the disc? Because even though you're getting the content you complained about, you're still not happy? Because at this rate, Valve could be giving out blowjobs and you people would still find something to whine about?
You don't deserve a discount. Stop acting so entitled. That's what spoiled children do.
I think that from the PC player perspective there's something fishy about them not releasing a proper sdk and releasing the sequel so soon and I bet that if the SDK had been properly available from launch there would a ton of custom campaigns out there that would've make L4D2 not that appealing.
Still, my guess is that most of the people against it will end up getting it, be that at launch realizing they didn't gain anything, or during a steam sale.
