Valve is going to get better at PS3, promise photo

I think calling the Orange Box's transition to the Playstation 3 an epic failure might be an understatement. One of the must own games on the Xbox 360 became a critical disappointment on the PS3 when the port sucked balls harder than a guy who can suck golf balls through a garden hose. Part of this was probably because they shoved the porting duties to EA, but another part of it is because Valve doesn't seem too good at working on the PS3.

Valve writer Chet Faliszek says that they're trying to do better however. He told CVG that, "We thought that the Orange Box didn't put our best foot forward with the PS3 community. We don't want to do something like that again on the PS3. We want to give PS3 owners the best possible experience.

"Some of that will come from us learning and getting better. Before we can go onto the PS3 again, we want to make sure we're better at developing for it."

Bit of an apology for sucking it up there, and a promise to move forward in a better direction. Couple this with the fact that Valve has stated it will be working on the PS3 in the future and I think we can have some high hopes that any Valve PS3 release will be at least as good as its 360 counterpart.

Valve: We messed up on PS3 [CVG]

Or they could just save time doing this shit and work on Episode 3 while I play Left 4 Dead on steam with Joy To Key to use my PS3 controller...

It's good to see Valve owning up to a weak area in their development team. This is certainly more mature than some of the previous statements from Valve (looking at you Gabe Newell).

I'm interested to see how this pans out in future releases from Valve.

How about they stick with the PC, I don't want Episode 3 having regenerating health and a cover system.

Great, more wasted development time used on porting.

Sure, I enjoyed The Orange Box and both L4Ds on the 360, but the PC versions outshone them by a ridiculous margin.

Keep away from the PS3 and get off the 360 Valve, put your funds towards the platform where your games are good, not where they're restricted and dulled.

Orange Box 360 was must-own?

Well, I guess. Everything but TF2.

I would like to take this time to say, as long as any future multiplayer games by Valve aren't dumbed down for the console market.

THERE

I said it. TF2 would never be the same without what it has now.

If they are uncomfortable with working with the thing, the don't do it. If they are all about doing PS3 exclusive games, I'm all for it. I think they should stick to what they know.

Well, it wasn't just Orange Box for PS3 which made Valve unpopular in the PS3 community, I mean Gabe Newell's comments didn't help.

But I'd say any console version of Orange Box was epic fail, due to the lack of post-release updates. TF2 have had some AMAZING updates.

"future multiplayer games by Valve aren't dumbed down for the console market. "

The differences between TF2 for the 360 and TF2 for the PC have everything to do with the limits of the platform.

On the 360, online is strictly p2p, which is why games have less players. Your average 360 user doesn't have the connection to pull off a 32 player server, while the PC community has dedicated servers that can.

As for the updates, there are two reasons why they haven't come to the 360. The first being the way microsoft handles DLC, and how Valve doesn't want to charge you $10 for each class update until you've payed more than the price of the orignal game for DLC. They said multiple times that they plan on releasing ALL of the updates in one DLC pack so as to not overcharge users or split up the community into groups of people who have only bought certain DLC packs.

The second reason is that the 360 only has 512mb of ram. TF2 was designed for the PC, and 80% of Steam users have 2gb of ram or more (usually with an extra 512 or so just for video) so the console version of TF2 has to be significantly more memory efficient. Valve already used up almost all of the available ram with the original version of TF2 that shipped when the orange box launched, and with all the added animations, skins, models, and weapons that have come with the PC versions updates, the game doesn't fit into 512mb like it used to. So while they intend to bring all of these to the 360 eventually, they have a lot of optimizing to do before it's even possible.

TF2 on the 360 is dumbed down compared to the PC version because the 360 hardware is dumbed down compared to a PC. Plain and simple. Valve has stated plenty of times that they intend on delivering anyways, but they are Valve, so it will take a lot of time.

"We want to give PS3 owners the best possible experience."

Is that something like the best possible experience that Terminal Reality wanted to give PS3 owners when they "apparently" used the PS3 as the lead platform for Ghostbusters, & said how wonderful it was going to be. That worked out well.

Don't get me wrong. I'd be very happy to see Valve games on PS3, but there's been enough comments by third party multiplatform developers in recent times about how "this time" the PS3 version is going to be just as good as the 360's, only to find it's really not. The machine is capable. The exclusives prove that, but if most developers can't get the results out of the black box o'blu-ray they shouldn't make empty promises. Prove it, or shut up.

... give me a break. Has anyone on the internet hating on the PS3 port (which is a LOT of bandwagon jumpers) even played it? I've completed the X360 version before buying the PS3 version, and the shortcomings of the PS3 port are greatly exaggerated. It plays fine and looks fine.

Give back the trust that Gabe destroyed? What trust? Valve has never developed for the PS3, they have always been a PC-centric developer who licensed out their titles to external studios to do console ports. They're major audience is the PC market, if anything making a PS3 exclusive would leave most of their hardcore fans abandoning them.

It's not Gabe Newell's fault that he worked for MS for years. It's also not his fault that he's probably the biggest fanboy there is, literally and figuratively, and he acts accordingly.

Hey hey hey people, don't start complaining about Valve now.
Even though they aren't making games for PS3, they are still one of the few cool developers for PC, I will not have you forget what they have done for the "dying" PC community over the years. Stop it people! We shall not complain about the Orange box, which is one of the best deals of the last decade.

Why would Valve stick exclusively with PC. Not only have they found a market on the consoles, the closed off nature of consoles discourages piracy. They know Steam is great DRM, but it is not full proof. There are plenty of people pirating steam game and some even still being able to authenicate to play in official servers.

This is them realizing the market is starting to level out (not looking for a console war) people are playing that games and having access to systems that were previously cost prohibitive.

I didn't think the Orange Box PS3 port turned out that bad. The later release date sucked. And I never saw the non PS3 version. The load times were brutal, and it was pretty choppy in places. But same game(s), I guess. Valve getting better at doing things sounds good. Maybe next they'll work on release schedules? Looking forward to playing Episode 3 in 2012.

I've got Orange Box on PS3, sometimes it's laggin a bit, but rarely. And sometimes shit happens with the sound, some kinda crackling. These the only two issues I dealt with playing HL2 and episodes.
I don't know why I bought it for the PS3, when I've got a PC capable of running HL2 with all of those cinematic mods and updated textures. Too bad that in cinematic mod Alyx looks like a fucking whore.

Remember back in 2006 when Sony said like three companies in the world could really produce games that take advantage of the PS3? Remember when you idiots (you know who you are) laughed and called them arrogant and stupid? But four years later and we still might only be seeing three or four developers really leveraging the system properly.

@Dan CiTi--Team Fortress 2 got shafted in the PS3 version. Delays for explosives weapons, clipping through in certain maps, as well as no new maps or class updates.

Valve should start by expanding Team Fortress 2 for the PS3. That was the very first game on the PlayStation 3 that truly sucked me into the online. Heck, they should also bring Left 4 Dead onto the PS3 as well, and make it good. They are talented developers indeed--the PS3 Orange Box was how I finally played the Half-Life 2 games--but they can be masters if they can also do PlayStation 3 development.

I honestly don't think Valve games should be on console anyway, there's just not enough depth to them usually which is why you get big packaged games like Orange Box.

L4D2 is great, (got the PC version) but after logging around 100 hours it starts getting really drawn out. The modding community for PC doesn't seem to be well embraced, oddly enough the PC community seems to have gotten really DUMB, I don't know if it's the advent of more affordable PC the conversion of console players to PC, or MMO gaming but man it's pretty much like playing on the Xbox360 any more with some brighter moments however. Yes I dropped out of PC gaming for almost 5 or so years. Change, it's inevitable as they say.

They seem to take forever for DLC, which is probably because unlike other companies they don't work on them till AFTER they are done with the game. However, I don't see why they don't enlarge their workforce. It's slow as shit.

What was so bad about the PS3 Orange Box? I had absolutely no problems. There was a little lag and skipping for like 2 minutes and the load times were epic (though just as long as on the PC). But it was the game, it played well, and it was pretty.

Beh. Bar Portal, Valve games aren't really to die for. A lot of Valve fans disagree (obviously they would) but a lot of gamers have lost interest in Valve for their scummy behaviour in the past and less-than-fantastic games.

I feel like I'm missing out on Mass Effect 2 (and Deadly Premonition :P), but Left4Dead 2? Not even a little.
