Valve hires DotA: Allstars developer photo

IceFrog, the individual currently maintaining Defense of the Ancients: Allstars, announced today that he has been hired by Valve to "lead a team". While he is currently unable to give any specifics on what he'll be doing over there, it's a pretty safe bet that he'll be working on something DotA related.

It appears that, even though he's now running a Valve team, he'll still be working on at least two patches for Allstars -- the question is if these patches are just him wrapping up already existing work, or if he plans on updating Allstars and working for Valve on what will presumably be a DotA style game at the same time.

Given the number of DotA style games that are either already out, or scheduled for final release soon, it's no surprise that Valve would want to get in on the action. DotA fans, what do you think? Obviously this is a good move for Valve, but is it a good move for the DotA community? Are you excited about the idea of a Valve-made DotA-style game, or would you rather IceFrog just keep working on Allstars?

I'm actually curious on what Valve plans to do with him. Could be cool, or could be weird. Or both. Like a Dota version of TF2? Ha!

Hopefully, due to Valve release cycles this won't surface again for another couple of years when everyone has forgotten about the current round of dota-clones.

That said, I'm interested in what he/Valve does with the genre, if that is in fact what they're doing.

It just means that Valve will get more off my money. Which is always a good thing because they put out good stuff.

Valve should release a game mode where you ARE the Ai Director in L4D

That would control like an RTs...

Oh dear God! The last thing I want to come out of Valve is anything related to Dota. I may be in the minority, but I despise Dota. It clogs up WC3 Battle net since everyone wants to play their own particular game and all the people I have ever played with were just plain rude. Particularly to people who are still new to the map. I know not everyone who plays it is bad, but none the less. It also doesnt strike me as being particularly deep. Many people who love Dota will no doubt say you hate it because you suck at it, and that is actually part true. I am bad at it, but mocking and booting me from the game because I am not clearly as good as the rest of them wont help me get better; nor is it polite.

Something about Gordon Freeman with horns, riding a battle horse, and wielding a mace is extremely hilarious to me.

Boring, Icefrog is not the creative mind behind dota, it's the community... All he has done for dota is balancing the sh*t out of it. I really doubt his ability to lead a team at Valve.

Wow i didn't see that one coming! I am anxious to see what valve has planed, now i am playing in the beta of Heroes of Newerth which is a dota -like game but with a better graphic and physics engine so it's interesting to see what valve will bring to the table!

Wow, but I have to agree...what does Icefrog actually do besides balance? I have played DOTA pretty religiously for the past 5-6 years (back when it was an Aeon of Strife), and besides balance tweaks and an occasional new hero, there really isn't much change happening in the world of DOTA. I mean, he was handed the entire format from Guinsoo back in '03-'04ish, who in turn was handed it from the previous guy, back who knows how many times.
I mean, I can respect a guy who edits and moderates a map used in tournaments for years, and single-handedly keeps a 6 year old expansion pack alive, but is he really all that and a bag of chips?
Oh well, back to DOTA for me. :P

i was just wondering, do you guys think dota is better when playing it on LAN? or battle.net? i fucking love dota, my favorites are lycanthrope, centaur warchief, stealth assasin, and sniper! but AR would be fine, dont matter who my hero is.

That is kick ass. I played DotA for four years, then moved on to Heroes of Newerth. To hear Ice finally got a job from VALVE? That is kick ass.

Yeah, i'm not sure if he's been just balancing or just adding new stuff, as far as I know some of the original DotA makers are working either on HoN or LoL.

Anyway, I like the games and I'm not burned out of them like Grim yet, but I can see me getting there.

Hey guys, remember when Valve hired the Quake Team Fortress team?

We can expect new IP from Valve within ten years.

some of you doubters have valid points, but are overlooking the fact that icefrog has been involved with projects outside from dota as well.

@arbsnotdead -- definitely LAN these days. Bnet has gone to shit. I feel bad for readers like eviltikiman who really don't like it, and have to deal with it taking over Bnet, but for the large population who loves dota, Bnet is such an annoyance. it's pathetic when players are forced to make countless programs addons to allow for large banlists of the plethora of leavers and assholes on Bnet, then have to make a bunch of betetr hosting apps since Bnet sucks at that too, then have to organize ENTIRE league sites because Bliz doesn't take advantage of a HUGE demand with even the tiniest of supplies.

on one hand, yeah, it's a business, they have no reason to change bnet if no money gain is involved, but i hold them to a higher bar than that. and they haven't met those expectations.

even if heroes of newerth was garbage, which it isn't, it would still do well since it does what everyone wishes bliz woulda done a long time ago. shame on them for not taking advantage of such an easy multi million copy selling game when they had many chances.

I have high hopes for Heroes of Newerth as a DotA clone. It's very close to the original but also much better. (I'm playing the beta).
But I think there is only room for so many DotA games. I hope he does something different at Valve, otherwise it will split the DotA community into too many camps.
