IceFrog, the individual currently maintaining Defense of the Ancients: Allstars, announced today that he has been hired by Valve to "lead a team". While he is currently unable to give any specifics on what he'll be doing over there, it's a pretty safe bet that he'll be working on something DotA related.
It appears that, even though he's now running a Valve team, he'll still be working on at least two patches for Allstars -- the question is if these patches are just him wrapping up already existing work, or if he plans on updating Allstars and working for Valve on what will presumably be a DotA style game at the same time.
Given the number of DotA style games that are either already out, or scheduled for final release soon, it's no surprise that Valve would want to get in on the action. DotA fans, what do you think? Obviously this is a good move for Valve, but is it a good move for the DotA community? Are you excited about the idea of a Valve-made DotA-style game, or would you rather IceFrog just keep working on Allstars?

If he's not playing Team Fortress 2 or getting into arguments about why PC gaming is superior, he's either off having a fancy dinner with lots of expensive wine, or sitting on the Destructoid IRC complaining that's he's not off having a fancy dinner.

Meet the rest of the team

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
That said, I'm interested in what he/Valve does with the genre, if that is in fact what they're doing.
That would control like an RTs...
I mean, I can respect a guy who edits and moderates a map used in tournaments for years, and single-handedly keeps a 6 year old expansion pack alive, but is he really all that and a bag of chips?
Oh well, back to DOTA for me. :P
I'll be looking forward to his future projects.
@arbsnotdead
Mostly we play Dota at on LAN. My fav. are nerubian weaver, soul keeper,Enchantress & Sacred Warrior.
Anyway, I like the games and I'm not burned out of them like Grim yet, but I can see me getting there.
We can expect new IP from Valve within ten years.
@arbsnotdead -- definitely LAN these days. Bnet has gone to shit. I feel bad for readers like eviltikiman who really don't like it, and have to deal with it taking over Bnet, but for the large population who loves dota, Bnet is such an annoyance. it's pathetic when players are forced to make countless programs addons to allow for large banlists of the plethora of leavers and assholes on Bnet, then have to make a bunch of betetr hosting apps since Bnet sucks at that too, then have to organize ENTIRE league sites because Bliz doesn't take advantage of a HUGE demand with even the tiniest of supplies.
on one hand, yeah, it's a business, they have no reason to change bnet if no money gain is involved, but i hold them to a higher bar than that. and they haven't met those expectations.
even if heroes of newerth was garbage, which it isn't, it would still do well since it does what everyone wishes bliz woulda done a long time ago. shame on them for not taking advantage of such an easy multi million copy selling game when they had many chances.
But I think there is only room for so many DotA games. I hope he does something different at Valve, otherwise it will split the DotA community into too many camps.
