Valve hearts EA, will continue relationship photo

Hey, Valve likes Electronic Arts, so what's your problem? In an interview with Eurogamer, Valve's Gabe Newell wonders the same thing.

"Everybody always tells us what a horrible monster EA is supposed to be," he said, "and we keep waiting for the hair to sprout out and the fangs to grow."

Newell and the folks at Valve are so happy with their relationship with the industry giant (who are publishing the The Orange Box compilation this fall), that he's confident that the upcoming Left 4 Dead will also be published by EA. Additionally, Newell says there's a "strong possibility" of a free Left 4 Dead launch weekend on Steam prior to release.

"It's a game that requires you to play it," Newell explains. "You can describe it until you're blue in the face, but five minutes of playing it is definitely better than watching a 30-second spot on MTV to try to get you to understand why Left 4 Dead is going to be worth your time and money."

Three words, guys: Cooperative zombie survival. Who needs a free weekend to sell them on that?

[Thanks, TheGoldenDonut!]

That's a pretty funny coming from a guy who's development company doesn't really need EA and can walk away without worrying about it going out of business. I think he's just making nice with EA for public appearances.

The man was responsible for Half-Life, give him a break! He deserves our unending praise, even if he does act like a dick sometimes.

@ bruceleethree:

Valve's relationship with EA was and is not a permanent one. Additionally, Newell is one of the most outspoken people in the industry; if he had an issue with EA, I wouldn't be surprised if he aired his complaints publicly. Lastly, EA publishing Left 4 Dead wasn't a sure thing -- Newell their relationship will contain with this game.

I'm glad you enjoyed the article!

@NBC

I totaly agree with your response. But I still feel that since there has never been a time where Newell bashed his publisher, I whole heartedly stand by my statement that it's a pointless article, not that it wasn't written elequently, it was, but the point was ..point, less. :)

He is outspoken, and almost always is right in his criticisms(except the part where Valve is staying DX9 for the time being and he's not for DX10), but he is not dumb enough to pour down on the people ponying up to distribute his title.

My .02, you obviously disagree.

Jesus, that man needs to go get a gym membership and lay of the ho-hos and twinkies!

Anyways, why the hell would he be so stupid as to support EA and say that they're not as evil as people think. THAT is evil...

Erm, but EA is just distributing their games, they are not their publishers (Valve has enough money to fund their own games). The only reason they 'need' EA is that after the fallout with Vivendi, they needed someone to ship the boxed versions and EA stood up to the plate.

I love Steam. It's getting pretty huge. Everyone complains about it but I love GM and all the other games out for it. Digital Distribution is the future. Plus, when would you see people release a whole game for free over a weekend? That's the ultimate demo. Hate it, don't buy it. Love it, keep playing till it costs ya, then pay up.
