Valve 'happy to talk about' being taken over photo

With all the talk of corporate takeovers and soul stealing that have been going on lately, one company certainly isn't quick to dismiss the idea of being swallowed up by corporate demons.

Valve's Doug Lombardi has stated he would be "happy to have that conversation" when asked about the possibility of his company being taken over. The house that Gordon Freeman built isn't actively looking to be acquired, with Lombardi adding: "The company's doing pretty well, and we're really happy with what we're doing. So we'll see. I mean, anything is possible."

A natural candidate for future Valve acquisition would, of course, be Electronic Arts, who is known to have a good working relationship with the company. "EA was very progressive about saying, 'We understand who you guys are," explained Lombardi. "'We understand what Steam is. We don't want Steam to go away.' Well, they might want Steam to go away, but they're not asking us to make Steam go away."

If EA would also like to acquire myself, I am open to the idea of John Ricitiello mounting a hostile takeover.

EA would possibly be a Black Mesa of Video Games, all it needs is a Gordon Freeman to fight it...

EA Games on Steam would be good. Mirror's Edge and Dead Space, not to mention the Battlefield series, would be a good fit.

But I like Valve being independent, I like them being their own publisher. It makes me like them more, for some reason.

I'm sorry but if this was to ever happen I might just light myself on fire in protest in front of Valve Studios. I used to love Command and Conquer and EA is the only company that I've heard of that made a game worse with each new patch.

Hmmm... I guess as long as Valve has complete control over their franchises, I don't see a problem. But it's EA, come on guys.

Half-Life '09 anyone?

Yes, EA would love to ditch Steam and push its own, vastly inferior digital distribution model instead I'm sure. Who doesn't like having to pay more to be able to redownload something you already bought?

I doubt you'd see the level of support Valve have for games post-release either, although the content updates for Burnout: Paradise are a sign of good things I guess.

I'm not seeing any need of valve selling itself. It has way much potential the way it is now.

Yeah, the day Steam begins downloading an EA based "conversion update" I will uninstall it and shed a tear for the many years of good computer gaming I experienced.

I wonder if Valve realizes they could be the ones to throw PC gaming to its doom by selling out to EA.

I see Valve as EA's opposite, at least business strategy wise. If they were to become EA and Steam was dissolved, I'd seriously question the future of the industry.

I feel like I'm being screwed while playing EA games (so many little downloads, protections, keys, bar codes, specs, etc)

But I feel like I'm being loved by Valve (amazing free updates when I least expect it, reasonably priced games, accessible engines, nice to mods, actually good business ethics, great design team, humble approach to game design, etc)

PC gaming would die for me if EA took over valve/steam.

Jesus, you guys all jack off to Valve or what?

I'd love it if Sony bought them out forcibly, for the irony.

Did everyone miss where Lombardi said that an EA acquisition wouldn't mean the end of Steam or a change in the way Valve operates? It'd be just the same, but with more games and more funding behind them.

EA isn't as much of a bad guy as they used to. Like it or not, game development and production is a business. Stop saying ridiculous things like "OMG i r gonna stop using teh STeem if EA gives valev $$$ 4 it".

I'd cry if Valve got bought out, because they would be turned into a Half-Life farm.

@Mecha Monkey

But they don't HAVE to merge. Business has many strategies - sometimes it means holding out and becoming equal (or greater) to another company, becoming the new standard, or merging. Personally I think Valve has the ability to do the first two things.

I bet Microsoft would love to take them over and just change the Steam name to GFW Live.

Do NOT want.

Albeit the only advantage I could see is the possibility of Valve getting more funding and employees, meaning they could release things with a little more frequency, but not making them a game farm. I want HL2: Ep.3 dammit!

I've been a fan of Valve for several years. You could say I've grown up with Valve. I agree with Timdabrat. Personally I'd like to see Valve grow and become much bigger than EA. Even though that may not be possible (yet). My only fear is that Valve would lose it's touch and everything would turn to garbage. In the end though I am against a takeover.

I don't care. Valve is not a company to easily compromise its principles. They'd remain the same as ever, even under EA's ownership.

Also, you n00bs who are talking about Black Mesa as though they are the bad guys? Um, no. Wrong. Black Mesa is a research facility. Gordon worked for them, he didn't fight them. In order for your metaphor to work, EA would have to be the Combine.

Valve isn't going to change if EA buys it. Ask anyone who works for BioWare or Pandemic. EA doesn't do the complete takeover thing anymore; they let their partners develop with a much greater degree of independence. Valve will still be Valve, Steam will still be Steam. The only difference is that Valve gets to take advantage of EA's massive marketing teams and huge revenues. This would be a great move for everyone involved, including the consumer.

MechaMonkey: you do realise, if EA were ever to swallow Valve, they would probably keep the name, but while adding their games to it, integrate the policies of their EA Store like paying an extra $5 or something to be able to redownload your games after a few months (the assumption is by not purchasing the 'insurance' you may have to re buy).

WTF who would take Valve over there nothing to take over, everything they do is a rehash of what they previously did or stolen talents from small out of college kids. Look at TF2 its TF but with the balance and gameplay screwed up, lets look at Left 4 Dead its counterstrike reskined mixed with some of their FREE mods. There literally scrounging the bottom of the barrel for anything.
