Valve details Left 4 Dead 'Survival Pack,' brings chart photo

After what seems like a hellishly-long wait, Valve will be releasing the free "Survival Pack" expansion for Left 4 Dead next week. Available for both Xbox 360 and PC, it adds a new "Survival" mode, as well as two more campaigns playable in Versus mode.

On its official Left 4 Dead blog, Valve goes into some detail about the mode. At its core, the "Survival" mode simply "pits your team against never ending waves of infected," with the goal to survive for a record length of time. But according to Valve, it's not as easy as holing up in one section of the map and praying to your god of choice. From what it sounds like, this mode will be like the campaign finales taken to the next level... and it actually sounds kind of terrifying.

Pacing the mode -- particularly how and when different types of enemies spawn -- was key for Valve. So serious they were, that they decide to share with us a chart. Now, I know it's a little early to be reading all them fancy graphs, but take a look at the time between spawns around the 15 minute mark.

Yeah, good luck with that.

For a preview, just don't jump on the rescue vehicle when it arrives. Sometimes 2 tanks spawn, I don't know if it is intended but it is terrifying.

Yeah, I've 2 tanks spawn on me at the same time as well. Screwed us over on No Mercy we wasn't expecting it.

But to have tanks repeatedly respawn in a matter of seconds.

They also said that the elevator section from No Mercy will form one of the Survival maps, people are really going to have to rethink how they work that one.

That looks brutal.

My inner masochist is quivering in anticipation, I might need a gimp mask just for this mode.

I wonder what the Valve guy's record is so far? That just seems utterly impossible to break the 17 min barrier.

THAT many tanks? My group only plays L4D when everyone is tired of RB2, and we have been having trouble with the tanks since that last buff they got. We're gonna get eaten alive!

I wonder though, if that means time between the first Tank's death and the next Tank's respawn. I can only imagine that's the case.

I guess, now I have a reason to go back to L4D.

@Dexter -- If that is the case, I wonder if the Tank becomes the only genuine threat. Assuming spawn times are relative to removing the original sets of infected, you could simply run around a lot to prolong your time (at least in terms of not killing off smokers and boomers...hunters would probably invariably get wasted just because of necessity).

Frankly, I think either way could be really fun. :)

I could never whitstand that. I suck at any survival mode ever made, of anything. Hope whoever gets the record tapes the play for youtube awesomness. 1 video for each survivor, please.

Well... If you can make it to minute 16, it's presumable that you can hold out for much further than that, since the spawn rate bottoms out. Of course, that's assuming they don't spawn multiples (hordes, tanks, hunters, boomers, smokers, witches)
