Valve bossman disses PS3; says Wii will be champion of the world photo

The PlayStation 3 hate just keeps piling on and piling on. I'm beginning to wonder if there are Sony PR people left or did they all just abandon ship? Oh well, moving along. The next industry dude to chime in on the next-gen console race is none other than Valve's Gabe Newell who had some harsh things to say about the PS3. What, did Sony murder his family or something? This is what he told Game Informer magazine:

“The PS3 is a total disaster on so many levels, I think It’s really clear that Sony lost track of what customers and what developers wanted,” said Newell. “I’d say, even at this late date, they should just cancel it and do a ‘do over’. Just say, ‘This was a horrible disaster and we’re sorry and we’re going to stop selling this and stop trying to convince people to develop for it.’”

Newell reserved special praise for the Wii, which he said would outsell Microsoft’s Xbox 360 by next Christmas.

“The happy story is the Wii,” he added. “I’m betting that by Christmas of next year, the Wii has a larger installed base than the 360. Other people think I’m crazy. I really like everything that Nintendo is doing."
Next up: Evangelists around the world will declare the PS3 to be the Antichrist and urge their followers to start a massive PS3 witch-hunt style burning. Kaz, better run while you can.

^ More fun , and yes, they are. People need to STFU about the PS3. It's here, it's not going anywhere, there will be no do over, and these people will be eating their own words once good games roll in.

What a crock of shit.

"lost track of what customers wanted"

I'm no supporter of the PS3. But its funny to hear that statement from the man who owns Valve.

I wonder how digg and Kotaku users are responding to this statement?

I agree with him on some counts but not all. The wii is great and all but it has definitley become less interesting for me the longer I've had it (I think Summa predicted that around podtoid 3)It's fun and all but it can get old. And about the ps3, I have read (probably on this site and others) that it is a pain to develop on, especially compared to the 360 so the fatty has some justification on why he doesn't like it. We just have to worry about the games that come out and having fun with them, these guys have to work for years with the consoles. I can see if it's a pain in the ass to do anything for the console that the fatties would have can attain a totally different level of hate then we can obtain with our respective fanboyism.

Does anybody know (links?) exactly why the PS3 is so difficult to develop for?

Coming from an experienced developer, I find this pretty compelling. However, unlike the Wii and 360, it seems that the PS3 is built for the future (when high speed internet, Blu-Ray and HD become more the norm). Remember, the PS2 has held up for nearly a decade after a slow start. Of course, the history of video game consoles that focused on other things besides great gaming is bleak.

Thank you Gabe; It's about time we got Valve on the Wii train. Although beating the Xbox 360 is unlikely.

Nick, Rob, Red Steel was a bad game, but the Wii has potential for FPS games. Elebits was a great example of what can be done on the system.

I'm sure there's no counter-arguement to Elebits.

@ b____ from what I remember, but coming from no real life development knowledge, it is tougher utilizing the cell processer in the ps3 than 360s symetrical cpu. I think it was put that if you knew how to get the power out of one of the cores in the cpu you could duplicate it easily with each of the cores. And the cell processer on the ps3 requires a lot more cup handling. http://www.gametrailers.com/player.php?id=16215&type=mov&pl=game

Re: the Wii - As a party system with friends over it's a fun way to spend some time but thats about it. The quality of titles (a couple notwithstanding) is not very good. Nintendo's getting a rather large pass at the moment, it remains to be seen if they can keep it going.

Oh and notice tubby didn't say squat about the 360 like he did in the past. That's because Valve is running on MS money ATM. No doubt an exclusive HL2 "total package" will be coming out by the time Episode 2 ships (sometime in 2010).

People may not see what Playstation is aiming but i think that they will succeed. Once developers have a better understanding of how the PS3 works then we will see more games for it. So i dont really dislike the PS3 but jjust wont be getting one anytime soon.
As far as the Wii yes it is fun and i like it alot. The 360 well what can be said about it? it right now is the dominating force. just wish it had a bigger HDD...

Hmm.. well is his opinion and he is entitled to it. Also my opinion is that his opinion is a complete piece of crap. If theres any console that needs to get redesigned is the Wii, I mean seriously how much do we have to wait before Wii users realize they CANT play next generation games in their so called "next gen" system? and Im not only talking about graphics, have you wondered why there arent any Wii multiplayer online games? could it be because the slow ass Wii CPU cant handle checking the net and checking the motion sensor at the same time!?

Also how much before Sony and MS pull the Motion Sensor devices they've been working for over 2 years or so (oh you didnt knew that? search it here my young padawan) yeah lets see how great the sales for the Wii get when the motion sensor "wiimote" is a device you can buy for any console at 19.99.

Whats that Nintendo? "Mario Galaxy" nah thanks Im busy playing Halo 3, Gears of war 2 and GTA4 with a freakin motion sensing chainsaw and a realistic movement Plasma blade thanks for the thought though.

Wow, Azrael gets the fanboy award for this thread...

What does CPU speed and netplay have to do with each other? I was playing Quake online with my mouse+keyboard about 10 years ago with my 486DX2-100. The Wii is light years faster than that.

And selling out at launch was no big deal for Sony, since they were only able to muster producing less than a few hundred thousand.

PS3 sold about 800K units based on NDP numbers, Azrael.

Actual numbers are 687K, but I think they underestimated it so.

"Speaking of that prediction, well, with games like Assassin's Creed, BioShock, and Mass Effect, among others, still on the horizon for the 360... we'll see. Nothing bad against Nintendo or anything, but I think the 360 is just about to hit it's stride, if it hasn't already. "

In Japan, they are doing horribly because of those same titles. I don't think you can win a console war without Japan. Both Sony and Nintendo can win the war even if they come second in both the EU and NA market, but number 1 in Japan. It is because the Japanese market overwhelmingly favors one system over the others and the disparity is much more pronounced. You could be winning in the NA market, but your opponent is just 25% behind, and still lose the war because he has 90% market share in Japan. And the game developers. Japanese ones are still highly influential and you won't get them if you're not winning Japan.

I'm sure glad I live in a world where pointing out someone's unattractive features immediately obliterates their opinions worth. A cunning argument, to be sure.

But Azrael, really? A motion-sensing chainsaw? Wow. A chainsaw that senses motion? I'm floored by your ingenuity.

I don't think the PS3 is a disaster or doom, but Sony has made about every mistake possible with the launch. I think they reached a little too far with the hardware design as well. It's a nice machine, but hardly worth the cost (yes that's an opinion, but an opinion many share). Sony had better be prepared to lose money for quite a while on this console. I think it's possible they could be forced into a price drop a lot sooner than they expected. A few killer apps would help, but that price will hold them back a quite a bit. I will get one eventually, I have a wii, and will get a 360 when the second gen hardware drops (hopefully with a bigger hdd), but it will be a while before the PS3 drop to a price point I can justify.

I'm not sure why it's necessary for people to debate the obvious. Is the ps3 worth it right now? Quick answer:No.

That's obviously debatable but come on all we have is launch titles. The only good argument I can see anyone making is that it's worth it if you wanted a blu-ray player but getting a blu-ray player itself is something not worth doing yet.

Will the ps3 be worth it in the future? That's up to developers really. The hardware itself has the potential. The problem lies with how hard developers are willing to work on exploiting its capabilities. It's really in their hands whether the ps3 tanks or not. They can either make some stellar exclusives that'll rake in ps3 adopters or they can continue to make half assed ports.
some_dude's Avatar - Comment posted on 01/15/2007 21:04

The PS3 can't stand too many more half assed ports with shitty framerates. I wonder how long it will be till the first AAA title hits the shelves. I mean one that's innovative, fun and has solid framerates with tight visual. Can't be soon enough as far as Sony's concerned...

"Yes, FPS just won't work on the Wii. Don't even try."

Even for you that is pretty fucking retarded.

FPS suck now because the developers haven't explored the controls. As you posted earlier today the WiiMote is actually very capable of capturing the movement.

Short-sightedness like your own on the part of developers and a reliance upon appeasing existing console FPS gamers (bounding boxes emulating analogue sticks) rather than those who want a new control system is what could hold back an excellent flood of FPS games. A few examples,

Forget the pointer functionality and just use A+motion to move the screen, B to shoot, Nunchuck for movement. This would be equal to mouse+keyboard, fairly intuitive.

Build on traditional FPS controls by allowing the pointer for aim, Z+Nunchuck for screen movement, B to shoot. This would actually give a more realistic control scheme for FPSs which even PCs would find hard to challenge.
