Valve banning innocent Modern Warfare 2 players? photo

We've been getting a ton of emails from disgruntled Steam gamers who claim that Valve's Anti Cheat bans have been selecting and booting innocent players over alleged infractions in Modern Warfare 2. The Steam forums are currently filled with angry threads from gamers purporting their innocence, no longer able to play the latest Call of Duty

Of course, the only people claiming that these bans were unfair are the people have been banned, so we've only got their word for it. However, the sheer volume of people who have been targeted by Valve Anti Cheat and claimed innocence since July 19 seems to indicate that a very real problem is apparent.

So far, Valve hasn't responded, with forum reps only saying that there's nothing to be done. Those who have been hit by VAC would need to repurchase the game in order to play it again, and a number of angry Steam users have created a group to voice their outrage at the situation.

In any case, this might be something that Valve needs to look into before it gets worse.

Anyone banned gets forwarded to Half-Life 2.

Maybe they're banning for...

Care package smoke grenade sprinting
Broken Perk abuse
knifing from 30 feet away
killstreak "spiraling"
one man army grenade launcher glitching

....or one of the many other stupid glitches built into this game that completely destroyed the exciting gameplay of the first Modern Warfare???

They have a PC, they should be playing TF2 anyways.

Who cares? Half of the people who were banned were probably part of the Boycott MW2 bandwagon anyway. CRY SOME MORE.

Doesn't VAC banning do this sort stuff all the time? Also if they're using steam then why aren't they on TF2?

Nothing to see here. VAC bans are legit, and often hit when you've already forgot what you did. Thats the POINT.

@SexualChocolate

I would be willing to bet that that's the case in most of these, similar to the XBL bannings a while back, where people abused glitches that broke the game, and got banned, but argued that "they were in the game, so it's fair". Regardless of the validity of that argument (or lack thereof) Valve wants to keep people playing, so more people will buy the game. If people want to turn the game into a playground, they can set up a private server... Oh, no wait! This is MW2! No servers!

When enough people get banned from a game and form a larger group, I'm inclined to believe they were banned for a reason and that a larger history than the most recent offense was taken into account. There's no such thing as an arbitrary ban, though who gets punished and who doesn't might seem that way, there's usually only anecdotal evidence to support such claims.

Chances are that one little thing you thought you might have gotten banned for is accompanied by a bunch of other little things you should be banned for. And no matter how much crying or gnashing of teeth goes down, Valve doesn't owe you shit for an explanation. This is what the EULA is for. When you accepted it, you accepted any actions they might take against you as just.

And that's the way it is, no amount of crying will change that. You wanted to play these games badly enough that you signed the EULA when you made a membership. You're bound to it, for better or for worse.

Also, as others have pointed out - there are better games on Steam. Maybe you should sample what else is out there, as you may be surprised to find something far more balanced and fun to play.

This is a problem to be sure, but I must agree with everyone else; Considering the broken clusterfuck of a disappointment this game is compared to the first Modern Warfare, coupled with the whiny douchebag nature of most MW2 players and I'm having a hell of a time caring.

Well, VAC did have it's share of false positives. But most cases, that were easily proved, were in the innocents favor. So, what we have now is that people were unwittingly using some mods (and activision is against any kind of modding) that they've either installed themselves, or that were spread like an infection because of the stupid p2p system MW2 has.
In any way, MW2 on PC has a lot of bullshit and all of it comes from Activision decisions. I won't be surprised if now is the same

@Sexualchocolate; Commando/OMA Grenade Launchers aren't glitching. They're just really awful game mechanics that they probably should've considered/tested before adding them to the game.

On topic, isn't MW2 one of the most pirated games of all time on the PC or something? Maybe they're finally catching up to the people that acquired it illegally. I don't really know enough about this stuff so I'm probably wrong. D:

Can I join on the "Well, they should be playing decent games" bandwagon too, please? I'd like to say "It serves them right for playing shit", but I do wonder if some innocent people got caught up in it - and it's a shame if they did.

I'm sure Valve have some form of appeal process, though, and I doubt anyone'll be that happy about shelling out £30-40 (it's really not come down in price much over here, I believe) again for a piece of arse like Modern Borefare 2. So, they should just write it off and buy something decent.

@ Gilthalas - Agree entirely (should have finished my comment with /sarcasm as most of my points are simply broken gameplay).

Along with the whole "I'm a soldier, I can fire 2 shotguns, one in each hand, at once and not BREAK MY FUCKING WRISTS!" Dual wielding hasn't been cool since "Blood".

VAC only bans users with modded engines.
Like if you change the core game files and play online, you'll likely get banned.
And you've got to think, VAC is valve made, and its made for source games, so there is going to be trouble if you put it on a non-source game.
(Hell you have to modify the .exe of MW2 just to have the console open.)
Exploiting doesn't get oyu banned unless its a engine exploit in which the core engine has been editted.

I like MW2 on PC. I guess that makes me one of very few people.

That said I don't think I'm going to play until Valve issues a statement saying this most recent wave was banning due to glitching/third party tools/previously unbanned aimbots. I don't want to risk a false positive. VAC bans on their own are pretty bad, but the "ban(s) on record" scarlet letter that gets added to your profile is terrible, especially if you've done nothing wrong.

And it's not just MW2. In case you don't know, a VAC ban means your *entire* Steam account is banned from any game with VAC secured servers...so you lose and have to rebuy all your other games too.

if i were to purchase a game from steam, only to be banned from the online portions, i'd stop using the service. they wouldn't get another penny from me. i'm sure a few of these banned individuals are thinking the same thing.

Let's ban all these stupid people, they will buy MW2 again and later I'll make them subscribe! *evillaughter*

AFAIK: This is what happens when you join a "dedicated server" or something similar running on IWnet that has a few files modified. You get those files autodownloaded with no way to stop them, and you get banned for it. Completely random, you might have been matchmaked with a hacked server, you might not. The only way to prevent it is to not play.

valve does not ban for anything but cheats, they will not ban u for glitching at games
vac does not look at this, it looks for programs that are actually hacks, like ones that link into the .dll files.

on another not vac has know to ban legitamite players, there was an incident with vac and esea and numerous bans, but most were removed, meaning false bans are very possible.

and finally if they would be rather playing funnier more competitive games they would be playing css or tf2, but that just isnt as popular....

I've run into a couple of modded servers that end up changing the mechanics of the game, one of those modded servers boosted my level from 41 - 70 by the end of one round. I wonder if maybe these people unwitting joined one of these servers?

You CAN one-hand shotguns. I was at the range doing it this weekend. It depends very heavily on the shotgun and ammo though. :)

I guess it all depends upon exactly what the server modified. I looked through a log of someone's console output and saw that there were a metric shitton of files that failed to verify.

Although that point was a bit moot, considering that the console unlocker itself, despite giving 0% advantage, was VAC banned. IW/Acti really, really hate mods of any sort by the looks of things.

Well, on 360 it's easy enough to accidentally get into a hacked/broken game, and have your score broken on the leaderboards. Doesn't surprise me in the least that it'd be just as easy to accidentally get into a lobby where VAC tags them.

well the whole point of IWNet was to prevent such things from happening and produce accurate tracking of a players stats. Companies fail to realize that this is impossible on the PC.

I enjoy MW2, not crazily so, but its fun when I'm really bored. That said, I second everyone who has brought up how easy it is to get put into a hacked game. It's not like you're looking for them, hell you can't thanks to this delightful new system, but you get into them irregardless.

I know back during the last free weekend I was only 2 levels from the top (what is it, 70 I think?) and played what seemed to be a totally normal game until the end when I received a bundle of xp that maxed me out. I'd be a little pissed if I was banned for that. I was kinda pissed it happened in the first place. I like earning my stuff, thank you.

Of course, without knowing exactly what these folks were banned it's hard to tell.
