If you thought Valve was simply going to put Team Fortress 2 out to the free-to-play ranch in 2012, then think again. A new blog post has announced a wealth of new content coming this year including the last "Meet The..." video in the series for the Pyro. Will we finally have the Pryo's gender confirmed? My bet is on Valve pulling a neat swerve on the issue just to confound us even more.
Also announced is the new Steam Workshop blog that allows players to keep up with all the new developments in the Mann Co. Store. Then there's the 2012 Saxxy Awards where we'll see some great replays that will make me jealous of my lacking TF2 skills.
The final announcement is maybe the most interesting because it's the one we know the least about. Valve is teasing a secret TF2 project, which is probably not the "un-Godly map/hat hybrid" they talk about in the post. Will TF2 have a new play mode? New characters? Some new ultra-free-to-play mode where Valve pays you to play TF2?!? Speculate ... NOW!

Again, that will make the Pyro's gender irrelevant for most people whether or not said gender is plainly obvious to begin with yet people wanted to hold out hope that it isn't a total sausage fest(which the Pyro turns into a weenie roast).
Then again, it's probably just Tyke Fortress featuring child soldiers killing each other for fun. If it looks like South Park, they could get away with it.

Team Fortress Kart Racer. It's been too long since those were the go-to genre for shoehorning games into.
The fact that he/she owns a flower hat and a pink purse. On top of that, he/she's wearing a very loose suit with a mask that has NEVER came off (As opposed to the other characters like Soldier and Engineer, where we've actually seen their eyes and crap.) so just the mystique of the character feeds the fanbase.
Also, it's just fun to speculate. x) Regardless, male or not I'm patching it into a woman as soon as a decent mod pops up just 'cause.
it might MIGHT just pull me back in the game after a year long hiatus :P

Which is to say, Valve will give you money for hats.
I was in the same boat for the longest time. I got TF2 way back in '08, only to play it twice. It was not until just last year that I actually give it a fair shot and realized how dang fun it is. It is just an all around great multiplayer experience that offers something for everyone. Just find a good server. The most fun I have had is playing on custom maps, one of my favorites is a map based on Minecraft.
TF2 with a PvE mode is already well on it's way. It's called Guild Wars 2.

Someone mentioned on somehwere else that they might finally officially release the Source Filmmaker. That would be awesome.
1)VIP Class gets at least acknowledged and Escort game mode returns
2)New game item slots (like an additional Misc or weapon slot)
3)Mannconomy update to allow IRL-money trading that Valve gets a $$$ cut of
4)More item sets
super Engineer + Pyro update that finally puts them on par with the buttload of Soldier updates.
