How about the item where you can buy beta access for $40? That's fucking idiotic. Whatever, I've been in the beta for a few months now, so I don't really mind. The game is pretty fun, if I could only figure out what the hell I was doing.

They'll make some cash and everyone gets to play on the same level, sounds pretty awesome to me.
And ^ this is probably because they know people will pay $40 for the game just to get in without the wait. No big deal. I think if you really wanna play DOTA 2 and haven't been able to yet, it's probably worth the cash to some.
At least you'd end up with a handful of items along with it, depends on what it's worth to you.

People have been paying more than $40 for beta access before this was even offered, at least Valve gets the profit now instead of individuals who sell their beta invites.
People were paying over $200 for Starcraft 2 beta keys. While Dota doesn't have as big of a following, Valve will definitely make a nice chunk of money for selling early access.

It's called Early Access for a reason. You're paying so that you can play earlier. You won't lose access after they fully release the game. It comes with 2 full sets of skins for Axe and Sven + a custom Courier so it's a pretty good option for people who don't feel like waiting for a key from Valve.

I reckon we'll find out at E3. I wouldn't expect it to be too far off, really. Also, I just played two games under the new patch, and got a random drop without leveling up, so there's that.

Been slightly addicted to dota 2 ever since I got beta access. The fact that all the heroes will be free after public release means that I'll probably still be playing this for awhile and will probably buy some shit just to show my support.
Meh. I'm in the beta and it's not really anything to write home about. Hats & such ruined TF2 (which I bought a long time ago) simply because of the influx of the sorts of people who are more interested in spamming chat with trading garbage instead of those who actually wanted to play.

Dota 2 is just great. THANK YOU VALVE! for giving us access to all the heroes! every other moba gives you access to like 10 heroes, and you can buy or play several games to permanently unlock one. i bought HoN THE DAY BEFORE IT WENT FREE TO PLAY. i don't regret it. i thought that when it said the game was on sale for 10 bucks was ending, it was gonna go back to 30 the next day. but instead they made it free. for awhile i was pissed, then i realized that i still get access to ALL HEROES, instead of being restricted with 10 per week. what i like most about having access to all heroes, is that it makes it easier to branch out. with the time i spent with LoL, i just got into a pattern of using 1 hero for each roll, so a handful total. if i didn't know how to play a hero, i just wouldn't play it. in dota i will hit random and play whatever i get. so basically...i am gonna spend ALOT of time with Dota 2.
It's cool that all the characters are selectable. That free rotation stuff leads to some strange team compositions sometimes.
Don't get too excited until you play it. I strongly believe this will be the game that, a couple years from now, we will be saying "remember valve before dota2? when we thought they were saints, steam for everything? What happened?"

Probably after PAX. That'd be a logical time (The International 2 ends and tons of attention will be on Valve) for an open to public release (probably only NA/EU though). Their bottleneck is putting enough servers to handle the demand for the amount of free users who'll sign up. You can still sign up and hope to get in. If you really want in, just put some effort into it, some streamers have like hundreds of keys and they can't get rid of enough of them. Some even go visit other streamers/pros and give them away on there.
