Today, Valve has announced the acquisition of Turtle Rock Studios, the Orange County-based development house behind the upcoming zombie-slaughtering cooperative first-person shooter, Left 4 Dead.
The formerly independent studio has had a long relationship with Valve, having developed the Xbox port of Counter-Strike, as well as a number maps for Counter-Strike: Source. Turtle Rock were also responsible for the the AI of the highly-intelligent Counter-Strike bots, experience which will hopefully translate into an army of frighteningly cognizant undead foes and allies.
"Left 4 Dead fills a long-standing demand gamers have had for a co-op first-person action experience," says Valve's Doug Lombardi of the upcoming Xbox 360 and PC game.
Doug, please allow me to correct you, ever so slightly: Left 4 Dead fills a long-standing demand gamers have had for a co-op first-person zombie experience. Thank you very much.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
However Left 4 Dead will fill the "action" co-op zombie genre that I've been looking for, however I would love a more realistic/survival horror based game. I would buy/play both...
get a patent for that, that is one of the best ideas for an mmo ive heard.
As for this news release, I can smell greatness cooking here, one of my must buys for 2008 is Left 4 Dead. Thx for the info Nick Chester.
Yeah, it would be fucking awesome but I've heard plenty of other people come up with the idea so I definitely can't take credit for it. However I pray that some day it will be done...I'm creaming myself thinking of the possibilities.
Last I heard L4D was coming out in February...now it says "Early 2008"...that's not a good sign.
But all my money will disappear when they start making merchandise for the Valve store.
Finish the game! We wants it.
Also,
Zombie Cocks
Unsettling though, zombie cocks, but internet memes are too fun for me to resist. One of these days these games are going to pull a fast one on us and a gigantic mutated phalus shall burst from the zombie crotch to not only consume our face, but our very souls and child-like innocence.
It's why, in anticipation of that moment, I always shoot zombies in the balls before I go for the head.
Be prepared. Go for the Balls.
nnnnNNNNNOOOOOO!!!
WHY LEMON WHY?
Also, want left 4 with burning, all encompassing intensity.
Anyway, honestly I don't care that much, I just want zombie goodness ASAP.
RE online sucked.
I want Left 4 Dead and Army of Two to sell like crazy, so that other devs can see that we WANT co-op, not just fucking deathmatch.
This is truly good news.
