Valkyrie Sky: The world's first MMO Shoot 'Em Up

Now here's a rather interesting title out of Korea that I'm 99.99% sure that we will never see here in the States. Valkyrie Sky is, as far as I can tell, the world's first cross over between the MMO and Shoot 'Em Up genre.

You can do all the MMO stuff like picking a class, designing your character, finding quests and joining up with parties. Once you go into battle though, it's mostly Shoot 'Em Up style with a side of MMO magic and summoning spells. As you defeat enemies, you of course get items to which you can use or sell to upgrade your character. And you can go on boss raids too.

There's a story to the game, but Google Translator failed me (it worked so well for my Spanish yesterday). What do you all think of the game? Personally, I can't wait for a DDR Golf Flight sim game to come out ... That would be bananas.

Man, its so fucking depressing for me to be able to recognize that as korean, but I cant read or write it worth a damn. Now I'm sad panda. I wish I was a smart asian.

I was initially going to say something smarmy about having all of four different looks for characters...and then the game made them teensy tiny. So it doesn't really matter.

I guess if it did come here it'd be about as popular as Planetside was... Looks good though.

this reminds me of a game called Wheel of Time, its a FPS game but with magic instead of weapons... not just an FPS game set in a fantasy setting, but you dont actually hold a weapon most of the time, you cast spells instead of firing your weapon... but it wasnt massively multiplayer

@ Carmatic: You know that Wheel of Time is a book series, right? Tried the game last year, it wasnīt much good. Itīs old though, time for a proper WoT game :D

Also, doesnīt this sound a wee bit like Hellgate:london? I tried the alpha build for a few hours, and the gun classes were really shootīem ups, point and fire kind of gameplay. Itīs not a full mmo tho, itīs mostly instanced.

There's already a Golf MMO, which features, upradeges, potions, and some other fantasy stuff... I haven't tried the most out, yet... :(

As nintendork said, Planetside already did (and continues to do) the MMO FPS thing.

Hamza - I think what tkyy was talking about is Toy Strikers, which is just a very basic looking multiplayer arena shmup. But VS looks to take the pages right out of WOW. People tend to call this "boring", but isn't farming and fighting the same pack of enemies in WOW also boring?

And remember Destructoid crew/readers, I'm always around if you want to talk shmups. ;)

Looks like it could be fun, which is different, since I usually hate MMOs.

@ A Ton Of Berries :
Yeah I know it is a book series by Robert Jordan, but what I was referring to was the unreal engine powered game , the manual actually advises you not to 'fireball jump' in the multiplayer maps as there are LOTS of places to get stuck in

okay ive just watched the video... its all nice and good, going around town , choosing your character , picking up a quest (huh why are people zipping into the air) , you know all that boring RPG stuff, and then the action began... like, i thought is this some kind of shoot em up game or something? this has nothing to do with FPS , theres no first person perspective anywhere ... theres no comparison with planetside or neocron or WoT , and it could have just as well have a sci fi setting like gundam or macross or anything involving fighting and flying at the same time ... half of this is from those soul draining sleep depriving life destroying mmorpgs, and the other half is a coin op top down arcade shooter

Everything is an MMO in Korea. I'm not joking. It's the only type of game released there. Or rather, every genre has MMO tacked onto it over there. It's a really dense place, and everyone has internet, so it's perfectly logical to do.

Found out some more info about this:

Homepage is here:
http://vsaga.hangame.com/

But be warned, it wants to install some Hangame software on your pc. Doesn't appear to be hostile though....

I'm guessing the game is set up as online distribution, since when you click on the "play game" button it takes you to a login screen. Anyone willing to try to sing up and navigate Korean is welcome to try it out....;)

Game&Game has listed this as "upcoming" on their site, so it *may* be getting a US translation soon!

Oh no, you got your World of Warcraft in my shoot em up!
