It is a sad truth, but sometimes great games get overlooked. It's even sadder when a great game gets overlooked on a system that really needs to be able to say, "Hey, look at this great game!" Such is the case with Valkyria Chronicles on the PS3. The strategy RPG had solid enough sales in Japan, where it has spawned its own anime, but totally flopped in Europe and North America. Clearly us westerners don't always have the best judgment about what to spend our hard earned money on.
Never fear though, we may be getting a second chance to do the right thing. Speaking with Famitsu the game's producer, Nonaka Ryutaro, said that he'd be very interested in making a sequel to the game especially since his home country of Japan has taken so kindly to it. It also helps that the game was just moved into the "greatest hits" category. Hopefully a sequel does come along and when it does it isn't Japan only. We can only keep our fingers crossed and show our support by playing the upcoming DLC.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?

Still waiting for the North American DLC release...
Regardless, I will be looking forward to this, I'll give this a chance and maybe the first VC another one as well soon. Also, it's a Sega game that isn't Sonic so I'm eager.
Like the end of chapter 11...far too many words for me to describe that.
also, puppies.
Seriously, I want this game!
I realize the less than stellar sales of Tales of Vesperia in the US kind of punches so holes in my argument... but I really want this to be port. REALLY! I can't afford a PS3...
What? There was never a Valkyria Chronicles on the PSX. Maybe you're thinking of Valkyrie Profile?
So as much as I would LOVE LIKE TRULY LOVE a sequel in America, I doubt its gonna happen.
Hopefully Sega will rectify their mistake with a sequel because this game was easily my favorite game of last year.
Everyone else: go buy this game!!!!!
It would have been nice to see some kind of advertising for the game, especially when the rave reviews started coming in. Oh, well. I'll never get a Gladius sequel, and I got over that eventually (no I didn't).
If they released during the middle of the year with heavy advertising I am sure it would of sold much better. I think some games with seemingly limited appeal would do best to try the $50 price point for their first try. People are more willing to take a chance if they see "$49.99" on the price tag. Bingo you just secured more people who will buy the sequel for $60.
I think you just answered your own question. It wasn't a generic JRPG.
I hate ironies like these, is what makes the industry go whole bullshit.
Sega have been doing well of late, despite the Sonic debacles. If they have any sense, they'll get onto a 360 port of Valkyria, as soon as possible. Don't make that Konami mistake of stalling, when we'd love to buy MGS on 360.
@Monodi I think in order for jrpgs to move forward, Valkyria is on stepping stones with Persona. Its doing some original stuff, that you might easily miss or disregard. Look beneath the surface of it.
Hell, a lot of FPS games are similar, but we still buy and have fun with them, jrpgs are no different in that sense either. And when familiarity breeds contempt, and change is needed, change will come.
Come on Sega, spread the Valkyria love.
I would rather them make a sequel ( and this time sega ADVERTISE THIS INSTEAD OF SONIC) than make a port that probably won't sell much.
I wish this could get a 360/PC port, but until then, I now want a PS3 even more =<.
Has anyone seen the VC art book?
Now that's just unfair. Sega is to blame here, too, you know. They did a piss poor job of advertising a GOOD game when they were too worried about a BAD game like Sonic Unleashed.
Valkyria Chronicles wins at being amazing. In a year filled with MGS4, Fallout 3, GTA4 amongst other well loved and critically acclaimed titles, Valkyria Chronicles being better than them all and selling less than a 10th of either one of them individually (Guessing, but it seems accurate to me) is a travesty.
