Valkyria Chronicles 2 on PSP so it can come out quicker photo

When Valkyria Chronicles 2 was announced, its cult following was pleased. When Valkyria Chronicles 2 was revealed to be a PSP game, its cult following was less pleased. Many hold out for another PS3 game, but the game's producer has explained that if this game were on the black box o' Blu-ray, you wouldn't see it for years.

Shuntaro Tanaka estimates that a console-based sequel would take three years to complete. The PSP release is simply a matter of time -- it's quicker to make a smaller game, so that's why the series has gone portable. Here I thought it was because the last one sold too poorly to justify a full-blown PS3 sequel.

The more you know.

Well I'll be getting it anyway, PSP or PS3... I absolutely loved the first game :-)

Wish it was coming out on PS3 so I could play it but oh well. Maybe the next game.

Well, that hardly justifies anything. I mean, it's theoretically always quicker to make games for handheld systems than consoles, but that doesn't mean we're going to see handheld sequels for franchises become the norm over console sequels. I just hope this doesn't do poorly because it's on the PSP, because that may be misconstrued as a lack of interest in the series. Also, I know it's a tiny thing, but I wish this would have been Valkyria Chronicles: Something or Another instead of a proper sequel. Oh, well. I'll get this for sure, anyway.

Honestly, I imagine it's because the original VC didn't do incredibly, and they cannot afford to do a massive console sequel. I despise my PSP, but I'll probably buy this because Valkyria Chronicles rocks my socks.

If they could get PSP downloaded games to play just off of the PS3, I don't think there would be a problem. I don't feel like buying a PSP just to play the sequel.

I heard that Valkyria Chronicles actually sold quite well.
Unlike the hyped games, having a massive sale at the beginning only to go down, VC had a steady pace on the sales, especially after the price reduction.
So I think it did very good, although not as good as it deserves.

I always find the QQing over a main franchise going handheld amusing, because for all the gamers that preach "games as art" they quickly try to find a way to dismiss a handheld iteration of a series as a spin-off or at least wish it was.

Clearly, only true art and true sequels can be accomplished on a console.

The original VC might have not done well, but that's because they were pitching it to the wrong audience to start with. PC and handheld gamers tend to embrace strategy titles more openly than console gamers do in part because the platforms work better for them. Designing a console-based RTS is a nightmare compared to PC and you can generally save a lot of money there, too. If you go handheld for your strategy RPGs, you save a lot of production time and money for doing so, allowing the product to be realized more quickly.

Pardon me if I don't blame developers for not wanting the blow stacks of cash to appease the handful of console gamers willing the buy strategy titles. Its better to go where there's already a market for it.

I have never played any of the VC games but this one does look interesting. I am very busy so the PSP is ideal for just picking up and playing for a bit. I have an XBOX 360 but I simply don't have as much time to play it. I have owned both a DS and PSP now and the PSP has been my favorite by far.

I must also be a jackass, because I love my DS. If you love strategy/RPGs like Valkyria Chronicles, then you're missing out on a lot of good ones if you don't have a DS.

Am I the only person who's excited about this coming to PSP? I prefer playing these kinds of games on my DS and PSP. God, I've sunk stupid amounts of time in the FF Tactics games, Jeanne D'Arc, the Advance Wars games, Disgaea DS, Devil Survivor, and Valkyrie Profile: CotP, just this year. That probably wouldn't have happened if they were on consoles and I couldn't play them at work, between classes, while my gf was watching tv, etc.

VC2 on the PS3 would sell much better than the first one since many people got their taste. PSP games rarely sell well... It will be there fault again if this doesn't do well.

I would really love for this franchise to succeed. I don't use my portables as much, so I would wait for a price drop to get full value out of this game. Unfortunate truth. (I get a little motion sick if I stare down at a screen in a moving vehicle)

I adore my PS3 Valkyria Chronicles, but could care less about VC2 on PSP. And I own a PSP.

The whole argument about saving money stinks of BS because they could just write an expansionish sequel that leveraged the existing game/rendering engine and art assets. And every single VC1 fan would be happy and dutifully put the money down. People didn't buy this game for the graphics, you don't need to update the engine.

Moving to PSP doesn't have anything to do with dev costs. The game didn't sell well enough on PS3. Just say that!

I've played the demo, and it's pretty good. I won't buy a PS3 for VC, but since I already own a PSP, I'll definitely be getting VC2 for it.

Truthfully though, the console market in Japan is stagnant, but the handheld market is still thriving, so it only makes sense for them to do this, and it's also why a lot of the major franchises are seeing serious releases for both the DS and PSP (Dragon Quest and Monster Hunter, among others). So this really shouldn't come as a surprise to anybody that's been keeping an eye on Japan's economy and how that's been affecting their game industry.

@clinth : But -- isn't it pretty clear that if the game didn't sell well on PS3, they'll have less money to pay their dev costs with, so they need to, um, save money? Just sayin'.

I get your point about the fact that they've got an engine and assets good to go. But their producer is the guy looking at the budget sheet; I wouldn't presume to know better than him how much game you can get on PS3 vs. PSP with whatever assets and human resources they happen have available for this specific project.

I'm pretty sure everyone would've been willing to wait 3 years just to see another decent sequel to a good game. This is a bad cop out in my opinion.

so instead of pleasing all fans, they please some by keeping it small.

As much as I'd like to play VC2, I don't have a PSP and I have no desire to get one. I already have a DS that I haven't played in ages and won't play unless lightning strikes and kills every single one of my consoles in one fell swoop.

From what I understand, the only reason Sega wants to pump out a sequel as fast as possible is so that it can still capitalize on the popularity of the anime. From the official blog: "We’re being asked a lot why we are releasing Senjou no Valkyria 2 on the PSP and not the PS3
....
with the broadcast of the TV anime we really wanted to get the game out before the impact of the anime subsides."

So, yeah - they're basically trying to rush this game out to cash in on the series' success in another medium. This makes me think the game will probably end up being buggy and unbalanced, like most other games that try to rush production to cash in on a license.

I'm not saying that the PSP doesn't deserve VC2, I just feel that the PS3 deserves it more. We were the ones that bought it, remember? The original fans? Why not make it for both? The PSP has PLENTY of strategy RPGs - we could use more on consoles.

I will definitely play the fsck out of VC2 now. I've wanted to play VC, but I have no time for strategy RPGs at home on the television. That kind of gaming works best for me during commutes, and this now seals the deal. Hell, the best SPRG gaming session I ever had was on a 6-hour flight to Seattle. Bring it on.

kelvnc: From playing the demo, it wasn't an issue, really. When you aim your weapons the nub let's you aim like normal, but using the D-Pad makes the crosshairs move much more slowly, so it really helps in terms of finesse when lining your shots up, whether you're sniping or using any other weapon.

Thats Bullocks, and they know it. The reason they brought it out for the psp is because it costs less to make for the psp and so they expect to make a bigger profit on the psp. I seriously doubt dev time was the main reason for the move. i mean you wouldnt just move a game to a portable system because of dev time. Its just money, and thats it.

My PSP is vastly useful: I use it for reading comics, streaming music from my laptop, browsing, reading pdf files (for college) and of course, gaming. My DS has Professor Layton, and is otherwise useless. Can't see the big craze over the DS tbh.

Also, every fan of the first one probably could have waited the three years for the sequel.
