When Valkyria Chronicles 2 was announced, its cult following was pleased. When Valkyria Chronicles 2 was revealed to be a PSP game, its cult following was less pleased. Many hold out for another PS3 game, but the game's producer has explained that if this game were on the black box o' Blu-ray, you wouldn't see it for years.
Shuntaro Tanaka estimates that a console-based sequel would take three years to complete. The PSP release is simply a matter of time -- it's quicker to make a smaller game, so that's why the series has gone portable. Here I thought it was because the last one sold too poorly to justify a full-blown PS3 sequel.
The more you know.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Unlike the hyped games, having a massive sale at the beginning only to go down, VC had a steady pace on the sales, especially after the price reduction.
So I think it did very good, although not as good as it deserves.
Clearly, only true art and true sequels can be accomplished on a console.
The original VC might have not done well, but that's because they were pitching it to the wrong audience to start with. PC and handheld gamers tend to embrace strategy titles more openly than console gamers do in part because the platforms work better for them. Designing a console-based RTS is a nightmare compared to PC and you can generally save a lot of money there, too. If you go handheld for your strategy RPGs, you save a lot of production time and money for doing so, allowing the product to be realized more quickly.
Pardon me if I don't blame developers for not wanting the blow stacks of cash to appease the handful of console gamers willing the buy strategy titles. Its better to go where there's already a market for it.
but still cool since I have a PSP.
Or, an informed consumer that made the correct personal choice perhaps? The DS is my favorite console, and you're a troll.
I must also be a jackass, because I love my DS. If you love strategy/RPGs like Valkyria Chronicles, then you're missing out on a lot of good ones if you don't have a DS.
Am I the only person who's excited about this coming to PSP? I prefer playing these kinds of games on my DS and PSP. God, I've sunk stupid amounts of time in the FF Tactics games, Jeanne D'Arc, the Advance Wars games, Disgaea DS, Devil Survivor, and Valkyrie Profile: CotP, just this year. That probably wouldn't have happened if they were on consoles and I couldn't play them at work, between classes, while my gf was watching tv, etc.
Jackass? Really? I see the benefits of having a PSP, I see that it has great games and great features; I don't deny that. But those features & games aren't worth the cost of a PSP to me.
That's not being a jackass, that's having an opinion.
Each one of you without an avatar is a troll. Man up, get an avatar and quit being D-bags
I have a DS and play it often. I have little interest in the PSP's features. I understand that they are nice, but I do not need them.I guess I am a jackass.
I would really love for this franchise to succeed. I don't use my portables as much, so I would wait for a price drop to get full value out of this game. Unfortunate truth. (I get a little motion sick if I stare down at a screen in a moving vehicle)
My avatar IS no avatar. I would have chosen Crono, but I've seen several people with him, already. Oh, and I'm definitely not a troll.
The whole argument about saving money stinks of BS because they could just write an expansionish sequel that leveraged the existing game/rendering engine and art assets. And every single VC1 fan would be happy and dutifully put the money down. People didn't buy this game for the graphics, you don't need to update the engine.
Moving to PSP doesn't have anything to do with dev costs. The game didn't sell well enough on PS3. Just say that!
Truthfully though, the console market in Japan is stagnant, but the handheld market is still thriving, so it only makes sense for them to do this, and it's also why a lot of the major franchises are seeing serious releases for both the DS and PSP (Dragon Quest and Monster Hunter, among others). So this really shouldn't come as a surprise to anybody that's been keeping an eye on Japan's economy and how that's been affecting their game industry.
That's the most insightful thing I've read in this thread, which is to say, I never thought of it that way.
PeaceWalker, Dissidia and the Final Fantasy Tactics Remake are making ALOT more sense to me right now!
I get your point about the fact that they've got an engine and assets good to go. But their producer is the guy looking at the budget sheet; I wouldn't presume to know better than him how much game you can get on PS3 vs. PSP with whatever assets and human resources they happen have available for this specific project.
Damnit, this and Peace Walker are making the PsP look really attractive right now.
so instead of pleasing all fans, they please some by keeping it small.
From what I understand, the only reason Sega wants to pump out a sequel as fast as possible is so that it can still capitalize on the popularity of the anime. From the official blog: "We’re being asked a lot why we are releasing Senjou no Valkyria 2 on the PSP and not the PS3
....
with the broadcast of the TV anime we really wanted to get the game out before the impact of the anime subsides."
So, yeah - they're basically trying to rush this game out to cash in on the series' success in another medium. This makes me think the game will probably end up being buggy and unbalanced, like most other games that try to rush production to cash in on a license.
I'm not saying that the PSP doesn't deserve VC2, I just feel that the PS3 deserves it more. We were the ones that bought it, remember? The original fans? Why not make it for both? The PSP has PLENTY of strategy RPGs - we could use more on consoles.
My PSP is vastly useful: I use it for reading comics, streaming music from my laptop, browsing, reading pdf files (for college) and of course, gaming. My DS has Professor Layton, and is otherwise useless. Can't see the big craze over the DS tbh.
I'll be getting this, more than likely.
Also, every fan of the first one probably could have waited the three years for the sequel.
