Classic Square Enix title Vagrant Story has today been announced for the European PSN store, due to arrive on December 22. Although the press release only mentions Europe, it's fairly safe to assume that the US PSN can be on the lookout for the game near that date as well. Excitement!
Vagrant Story is one of the Square Enix's most beloved properties, often hailed as one of the best PSOne games of all time. Already on the Japanese PSN, fans have been waiting for word of a Western release for quite some time. Fortunately, that wait is almost at an end. Just in time for Christmas, too!
So, show of hands -- who's planning to pick this one up when it drops? I know I'll be digging into my wallet.
Thursday 17th December/...Square Enix Ltd., the publisher of Square Enix® interactive entertainment products in Europe and other PAL territories, today announces VAGRANT STORY®, the classic RPG adventure originally released in 2000, will be available to download from the PlayStation®Store on PlayStation®Network across PAL territories from 22nd December 2009, priced €5.99.
The original PS one® release secured immediate critical acclaim on its launch with Famitsu awarding it 40/40. Famed for its darkly compelling narrative, unique battle system, and atmospheric 3D world, VAGRANT STORY is a genuine classic.
As the VKP’s (Valendia Knights of the Peace) elite Riskbreaker, Ashley Riot, you must pursue a group of cultists into a deserted city of Leá Monde in an attempt to rescue the kidnapped son of a Valendian dignitary. But all is not as it seems, and everything you once believed will soon be called into question as you contend not only with the cultists, but rival political factions, the city’s restless fallen, and your own dark memories.
Larry Sparks, Vice President Brands PAL Region of Square Enix Ltd. comments, “VAGRANT STORY is one of only a handful of games to be honoured with Famitsu’s highest possible score and it’s a great pleasure to be releasing the game in Europe. For the first time in years VAGRANT STORY will be easily accessible to original fans and new gamers wanting to experience a true classic.”
VAGRANT STORY is available in all PAL countries where the PlayStation®Store is available.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
As for Vagrant Story and FFVIII - hooray!
but either way. if anyone out there hasnt played it or doesnt own it, pick it up if you can. you wont regret it.
I'm kinda shocked that it wont cost £7.99 at the minute though!
Jesus I just got fucking giddy with excitement!
might still get it just as a sign of good will, in hopes that they finally make a proper sequel.
all y'all, if you haven't played it yet: BUY IT.
God I still have this game. Bought it from a friend of mine that was a huge fan of Squaresoft, but didn't care for VS that much. I wound up playing the game for three years straight before finally committing myself to understanding and beating the game. It was really worth the effort, because the combat, graphics, and the story are all in balance with each other. The way the dialogue is written and presented is also amazing. The developers actually went to various catacombs and old European ruins and cathederals to use as reference for the game environments.
This is easily one of the most atmospheric and visually impressive Playstation 1 titles, and if you set the texture smoothing on the PS2, the game actually looks better, since all the pixels are kinda smoothed. Just a really damn awesome improvement to an already awesome game.
Squeenix will never be this good again.
@Oncamouse-Seconded! This is the only one I actually care about coming to PSN, since I still own originals of the other 3 PSX FFs.
Don't have a PS3...*sigh*, just have to be satisfied with my fading memories...
@br0th3r
If you still own the game it works prefectly on a PSX emu.
Being able to play it on my PSP as well is kinda tempting tho...
Now if they`d let me play my god damned Dragon Quest VIII on my PS3 i`d sure be a happy camper
