Vagrant Story hits Western PSN on December 22 photo

Classic Square Enix title Vagrant Story has today been announced for the European PSN store, due to arrive on December 22. Although the press release only mentions Europe, it's fairly safe to assume that the US PSN can be on the lookout for the game near that date as well. Excitement!

Vagrant Story is one of the Square Enix's most beloved properties, often hailed as one of the best PSOne games of all time. Already on the Japanese PSN, fans have been waiting for word of a Western release for quite some time. Fortunately, that wait is almost at an end. Just in time for Christmas, too!

So, show of hands -- who's planning to pick this one up when it drops? I know I'll be digging into my wallet.

Thursday 17th December/...Square Enix Ltd., the publisher of Square Enix® interactive entertainment products in Europe and other PAL territories, today announces VAGRANT STORY®, the classic RPG adventure originally released in 2000, will be available to download from the PlayStation®Store on PlayStation®Network across PAL territories from 22nd December 2009, priced €5.99.

The original PS one® release secured immediate critical acclaim on its launch with Famitsu awarding it 40/40. Famed for its darkly compelling narrative, unique battle system, and atmospheric 3D world, VAGRANT STORY is a genuine classic.

As the VKP’s (Valendia Knights of the Peace) elite Riskbreaker, Ashley Riot, you must pursue a group of cultists into a deserted city of Leá Monde in an attempt to rescue the kidnapped son of a Valendian dignitary. But all is not as it seems, and everything you once believed will soon be called into question as you contend not only with the cultists, but rival political factions, the city’s restless fallen, and your own dark memories.

Larry Sparks, Vice President Brands PAL Region of Square Enix Ltd. comments, “VAGRANT STORY is one of only a handful of games to be honoured with Famitsu’s highest possible score and it’s a great pleasure to be releasing the game in Europe. For the first time in years VAGRANT STORY will be easily accessible to original fans and new gamers wanting to experience a true classic.”
VAGRANT STORY is available in all PAL countries where the PlayStation®Store is available.

I too would love to own a digital copy of Ashley's assless chaps. Sony will be getting my money next week.

Finally a chance to try this game. First day buy. I think that's likely to be a trend with SE PSone classic releases. I can't imagine them releasing any of their crappy PS1 games like Legend of Mana or any of the SaGa games.

I'll buy it. Now if we can just get any of the other hundreds of RPGs that I want from the PS1 era. Like Lunar 1 and 2, Valkyrie Profile, Suikoden II, Persona 1 and 2, and while they're at it how about an English port of Persona 2 Innocent Sin? Isn't it weird that we got the sequel to a game and never got the prequel to give the game any context? Well that will end my tangent...for now.

I hope you are right about the US PS store, as the releases have been lacking as of late. I will certinaly pick this up if/when it comes out as I never got around to finishing this when it came out my freshman year of college. I tried to track down a used copy a couple of times, but couldn't bring myself to pay $30 or $40 bucks for a PSone game....

I have my original copy too, but I'd love for some of the more rare RPGs to be available for download when I get my PS3. Tactics Ogre, the Suikoden games, Lunar 2, Alundra, Azure Dreams, etc. And for the love of God, will SOMEONE start making old Saturn and Dreamcast games available for download? The Saturn had some of the best RPG/Adventure games, ever.

@Edge2k10 - The PSP Persona is already on PSN (Revelations: Persona is not somthing to want anymore, unless you actually want Black Mark and so-bad-its-funny translations). Given the trends I'm just gonna hope for a full Persona 2 reversioning with IS and EP in one package.

As for Vagrant Story and FFVIII - hooray!

Was just talking to my friend last night about games I want on PSN. Seems they are keeping tabs on brain. It'll be really scary if they put Mega Man Legends up there soon too...

Normally I don't get the point of buying these PSOne games versus the actual discs unless you have a PSP and want to play it on the go. Vagrant Story, however, is quite pricey on the used market. I just might buckle and pick this up. I've always wanted to play it but never found the time.

I have an original copy and didn't think it were that great from the first hour or so. That was many years ago though, I would like to get into this game at some point and find out what makes it so great.

I'm kinda shocked that it wont cost £7.99 at the minute though!

I loved this game back in the day, but by today's standards, it's going to be an eyesore if Square-Enix and Sony don't update any of the textures or graphics for HD.

This is definitely exciting news, but there's something I need to have cleared up for me. I recently downloaded Wild Arms directly to my PSP from the PSN network. After only a half hour of playing, the game started to freeze up at random moments. I went online and discovered that many other people had run into the same problem. Does anybody know if this tends to happen with all PSone downloads, or was this a rare occurrence?

I'll prolly be picking this up, just hope it doesn't suffer from the same graphical glitches as FFVII, I'm only at the trainyard for the second time ( after 'freeing' the chick from the pimp ) and its become completely unplayable due to graphical glitches :-(

Ah, the times when Famitsu's 40/40 scores meant something. best PS1 game along with Metal Gear Solid, IMO. I'd get it if I didn't already have an original copy with over 500 hours invested in it. (the counter stops at 100. It might be closer to 2000).

might still get it just as a sign of good will, in hopes that they finally make a proper sequel.

all y'all, if you haven't played it yet: BUY IT.

vagrant stories= equals final fantasy. atleast thats what i heard. supposedly its told in one of the worlds of the series. i for one the think square should name all their games differently so people can stop bitching about "oh gosh another FF when will they stop".

Bout goddamned time! Day one purchase, guaranteed. And then I shall bid a hasty adieu to my social life and once again enter the depths of Lea Monde, most likely never to return... except to find an FAQ map for the Snowfly Forest. That place STILL confuses the shit outta me.

@RulesTheyDontApply: Vagrant Story takes place in the same world as Final Fantasy Tactics and XII, only in a different time period. It's after tactics, and I guess before FF12.

God I still have this game. Bought it from a friend of mine that was a huge fan of Squaresoft, but didn't care for VS that much. I wound up playing the game for three years straight before finally committing myself to understanding and beating the game. It was really worth the effort, because the combat, graphics, and the story are all in balance with each other. The way the dialogue is written and presented is also amazing. The developers actually went to various catacombs and old European ruins and cathederals to use as reference for the game environments.

This is easily one of the most atmospheric and visually impressive Playstation 1 titles, and if you set the texture smoothing on the PS2, the game actually looks better, since all the pixels are kinda smoothed. Just a really damn awesome improvement to an already awesome game.

Squeenix will never be this good again.

IMO, one of the best games Square ever put out. A really strange mix of a rather unique action adventure combat mechanic, interesting environmental puzzles and nearly endless equipment customization. Top it off with a quite interesting story you have one of my favorite games of all time.

Don't have a PS3...*sigh*, just have to be satisfied with my fading memories...

I would be an instant "hell yeah!" but I still own the original disk so I think I'll just pop it into my PS3 and have a whirl.

Being able to play it on my PSP as well is kinda tempting tho...

I will grab it, it'll make for the third Square game I've ever bought, FF7 FF8 (just now!) and vagrant story. They actually had some pretty good games, I'm impressed. No wonder fanboys drool over the next FF game coming out.
