Vagrant Story coming soon to a PSP and PS3 near you! photo

Did you know that Vagrant Story is coming to the Western PlayStation Network soon? Now you do! Square Enix's classic PlayStation game is regarded as one of the finest RPGs of its generation, and among Square's most accomplished titles. Despite its immense popularity, it never took off as a franchise, but it left a legacy that continues to this day.

Vagrant Story was released on the Japanese PSN quite a while ago.

It was originally believed that the game would arrive as early as next week, but Square Enix has since confirmed otherwise. No official date has been given right now, but hopefully it will arrive soon. Who knows? Maybe it'll even give the PSN version of Final Fantasy VII a run for its money.

Ahhhh finally!

I lost my PSX copy years ago. I'd love to see an updated sequel for this as well sometime.

I can now repent for my sins of not finishing it back then! I am saved!

I think "immense popularity" is a bit of an overstatement. The game sold dick all, as far as i know, but everyone likes to pretend that they played it.

I've never played this game, but if it is coming to PSN i am totally picking up this shit. Classic Matsuno! Stoked!!

Is this good good, or Final Fantasy VII good? Guess I'll find out soon enough.

Yeah!!! I had just made a thread about wanting to see this game (along with other obscure/forgotten ones) come to PSN in the forums.

@protomark

Why would somebody pretend to play a game? That makes no sense to me. I don't know any gamer posers personally..

Oh shit, nice. I played a bit of this back around the time it came out. It's got a pretty cool battle system. The pace of the game felt a bit slow, though I don't know is that is because I didn't get far enough into the game or not. Had a really slick opening though.

I remember looking to buy it at the local flea market back then, but ended up picking up Valkyrie Profile by mistake(not that I regret doing that :D).

@fetusmilk: Wow, so "real is brown" is a lot older than we think? D:

I have this on my PSP already, but I haven't given it a decent playing yet. I'm very interested in the setting at the least.

YES!

Vagrant Story deserves a sequel.

(Also, offtopic, Bayonetta's getting a special edition for the PAL version. Jim, I need your saliva on that.)

I've been playing an ISO of this on PSP for a while. I never had a chance to play when it was originally released and I can say that from the 8 1/2 hours I've put into it I've really enjoyed and I can see why it deserves some amount of praise.

Had to log in and comment on THIS one:

For all of you have not had the privilege and the pleasure to experience this game, pick this up IMMEDIATELY. Vagrant Story being under-played and under-appreciated numbers among the greatest crimes of our millenium.

While Final Fantasy VII has aged worse than Liz Taylor, VS remains a shining paragon of PS1 achievement. The upscaler and texturing look absolutely fantastic on any television (no HD needed), and has been infecting my PSP with 32-bit beauty for years now. The combat system is unique and, in my humble opionion, unrivaled to this very day. The item creation mechanic kept me coming back for more than 10+ files. Of course, the score is also top-notch, but another feature deserves that most acclaim: the absolutely, positively coolest storyline of any game in the last generation.

No whiners, no teenagers. Just pure, unadulterated badassery. After you beat the game, you might want to download a transcript of the dialogue just to bathe in the light of its glory. The gameplay? Flawless. Craft items, slay dragons, cast baneful spells, split hymens, and whup ass.

The world DESERVES to relive the story of Ashley Riot; I am a Grand Master Breaker, and you should be too.

YUS!! This is the most underrated game of the past 20 years. Better than any Final Fantasy. Hopefully this time it will get some blasted recognition.

HOLY BALLS!

I just bought a PSP last week, and it's becoming one of the most fulfilling purchases I've had lately! Well...next to my 360, of course =P.

Hopefully it costs $10, then I can go pick up a $20 card and DL FF7/Vagrant Story. I'm still struggling to come to terms with the fact that this is a real thing that will happen.

I vaguely remember Vagrant Story, I played it when I was so young...I can't remember if I liked it or not, though. Probably liked it, but I'll see when I download this.

Never played this but have heard good things. Though I'm not a fan of heavy "micro-managment" style rpgs, I think I'll pick it up. Wonder if its going to be $10 like the other two square games (FFVII & FFT) or the more common $6 pricetag.

I'm surprised that no one has yet mentioned anything about Ashley's questionable taste in pants. You have let me down, Destructiod.

Anyways, everyone should have Vagrant Story in their collection. Run out and get it. And it is one of the few PSX games that does not look like, well, ass. Pants excluded.

This is my favorite game ever. Bar none. I don't know what it is about the system or the feel, or the fact that you can always go back and do it again differently - it's just the perfect package. It kills me that a sequel was never made to this stellar title. The plot basically set the whole story up as a prologue to a larger storyline.

gabapenteado: it's called the Rood Inverse.

Yay! This just made my day, as my original PS1 copy was apparently swallowed by the mists of time (aka, my little brother lost it). I love this game with all my soul, and even though I'm a broke-ass, will be a day one purchase for me. I would give my leftmost jewel for a sequel.
My buddy actually has a tattoo of the Rood Inverse, and he only got it because I basically face-raped him with the game til he played and loved the hell out of it.

Has there actually been any word that this is making it to the US? As far as I can tell, it's only coming as far as Europe, and is still unannounced for the US PSN.

SWEET.

I used to have custom firmware on my PSP and had this game up and running on it but I eventually "officially" upgraded my PSP firmware (to play Prinny:CIRBTH) so I can't play it anymore.

Back when I owned the PHYSICAL game for PS1, I dropped like 30-40 hours into it and loved it, but got stuck at some point and quit. I look forward to revisiting the game on a larger screen.

It holds up pretty well (though on the PSP screen, it's a bit hard to tell what's going on sometimes), aside from the cutscenes which I kind of wish were just done in CG now or at least I wish they had voice work.

Lots of reading if you want to follow the plot, but it has a VERY rewarding (and original) combat system and it also rewards those who want to spend time upgrading equipment (though it's not essential if you master the in-fight combo system).

Almost tempted to get a PSP or PS3 just for this. I played Vagrant Story to death back in the day to the point where I ended up knowing the lore to a depressing degree. MY PS2 crapped out on me way back - I still have my original copy of the game but nowt to play it on. Might be time to cough up.

I've always wanted to play this, glad it's coming out.

It's exciting that one of the best developers of the PSone era is embracing PSN digital distribution. Alright Square Enix, now put Chrono Cross on the PSN and I'll be set. :)
