Vader unleashed: Play as the Sith Lord in latest Star Wars game photo

Star Wars: Force Unleashed is shaping up to be a fantastic action title with its impressive physics and brooding story revolving around Darth Vader's secret apprentice. Today we've just had a new drop of news that's sure to make some fans even more gooey inside -- not only will you be playing the apprentice, but the Dark Lord of the Sith himself.

The first level takes place on the Wookiee home planet of Kashyyyk, and allows you to assume the role of Lord Vader as he hunts for Jedi. I hate Wookies, so the chance to throw them around as Vader himself has already earned this game a gold star on principle alone. While it sounds like Vader is only in the first level to demonstrate all the Force powers you'll eventually earn as the apprentice, it's still an announcement made of Dark Win.

Even as a passing fan of Star Wars (more interested in the expanded universe than the passable movies), I am excited for this. The hype is strong with this one, but it still looks like Force Unleashed has everything to become one of 2008's hottest games. You get to Force Blast Wookiees, for crying out loud! That's one sale guaranteed right there.

How can you hate wookies? They tear their foes limb from limb.

Ewoks on the other hand...i'd happily kick every single one of them in the face.

Awesome news, Jim. I was just wondering if you could play as him the other night and you've cleared this up for me. Suffice it to say that I'm one happy wookie.

*Prepares to get flamed*

I didn't like KotOR. And it put me off star Wars games. I haven't picked one up since. Doubt I'll be looking at this one either, hilarious Vader pics or not :/ And it's sooooo wrong to let one game spoil everything, but yeah. KotOR ruined it.

If someone made a gaming version of Supermarket Sweep and Darth Vader was a playable character it would still be fucking awesome.

I think that this cant hurt what already looks like a pretty good looking game.

Even more my Video Game Journalist Hero. I'll get thee a badge. When I finish my hotpot.

Aside from that, I'll probably keep watching the progress of this game; admittedly it looks pretty interesting with the "antastic action title with its impressive physics and brooding story" but just badging "MOTHERFLIPPING STAR WARS" isn't going to make me want to buy it.

this almost makes up for the fact that they say VADER will only be playable on the PS3 version of SCIV. thats some bullshit there but this makes it all ok.

This is completely stupid, considering that this takes place between episodes III and IV, Darth Vader is currently in the midst of governing the Death Star's construction and in doing so his role is currently affixed to that position. The Emperor acknowledges Darth's power and requires him to be an apprentice to leading the Republic to glory, so why are they bothering to endanger a powerful sith like this into battling some furballs? It's a little bullshitty and I refuse to accept that the dark side would risk putting their best man on the frontlines when they have literally thousands if not millions of stormtroopers who will die for the cause.

Night Dehumidifier : He's probably searching for the last of the Jedi, like the game says, and who was the last Jedi on the Wookie planet? Yoda.

So he isn't going there just to beat up some furballs, he's trying to finish what his master started, which makes sense.

@NightDehumidifier

1) Vader didn't need to sit around watching the Death Star get built. It's not as if he built it himself. They could just fax the papers over, get his secretary to pass them to Vader to sign, and send them back. Grand Moff Tarkin didn't just stink up the space station, he's a Moff. He was Moffing in Vader's place.

2) Vader had the 18 years it took Luke and Leia to grow up between the two movies to go Jedi hunting. Even if he was stuck on the Death Star, it wouldn't have been for 18 years. Vader hunted down the remaining Jedi himself immediately following the events of Revenge of the Sith. He wasn't hunting Wookies, he was looking for Jedi. Wookies just got in the way.

Also, Vader playable = mucho bonus points

Don't get me wrong. The game looks great and playing as Vader will be awesome, but I'm getting a little tired of the "Welcome to the 1st level, here's how powerful you can look forward to becoming" BS, only to have it stripped away in level 2. A la God of War 2.

Jim, I love you for your picture captions.

This is awesome. I love the idea of Vader and the Empire still searching for Yoda and/or Obi-Wan. And hunting Wookies? Jim, have you ever played Republic Commando? If they go that design route, the Wookies could be freaking amazing to tangle with, even if it's probably just a tutorial stage.

I like to think that at first Vader spent plenty of time away from the Death Star construction, fighting.

But as the number of Jedis dwindled he just got lazier and lazier until his skills atrophied to what we see in episodes IV and on.

Too much popularity for Vader to be just a level one demo stand in. Im thinking you meet a certain number of requirements or beat the game, Darth Vader becomes fully playable. Which would be sweet : D

The Emperor wouldn't want to risk him? Shit, the Emperor tries to kill him regularly. If Vader isn't strong enough, he doesn't want him as his apprentice.
Garbz's Avatar

In the Expanded Universe book 'Rise of the Dark Lord', the Emperor sends Vader to Kashyykk to kill a group of jedi who surived Order 66 and journeyed to Kashyykk in the hopes of finding one of the three jedi generals who were stationed there towards the end of the clone wars.

So yeah, presumeably this first level takes place at the end of this novel and is the event where Vader decides he needs an apprentice of his own to help kill off the last jedi and help him destroy the Emperor
