Utterly pathetic: Thai government bans five videogames photo

Sigh.

Following Thailand's ridiculous anti-videogame uproar following the murder of a taxi driver, it seems that the Thai Ministry of Culture has decided to ban five of the ten titles on its plagiarized list of "dangerous" videogames. The following games are now illegal sales in Thailand:

  • Hitman
  • 300
  • Killer 7
  • Hitman: Blood Money
  • Fifty Cent: Bullet Proof

300? Are you f*cking kidding me? Is the MOVIE it's based on banned as well? This is some of the most utterly ridiculous crap I've ever heard in the field of anti-gaming, and I've spoken on the phone with Jack Thompson. Very depressing, and absolutely ludicrous when you realize that all the games on that list have been out for YEARS with no crime in Thailand linked to any of them. If they were so dangerous, why have they caused NO problems before now?

What needs to happen now is for the games industry to sever all ties with the country. While that would suck even more for Thai gamers in the short term, I think this government needs to learn what happens to its economy when the games industry does to it, that which it has just done to the industry. Seriously, screw Thailand's attitude here. If I lived there, I'd be deeply ashamed.

OK, this is the type of stuff I tend to agree with you on. What a non-solution to an isolated incident.

I guess Hitman 2 and Hitman Contracts are still okay?

What a beautifully executed game ban.

Heh as far as I'm concerned 50 cent games should be banned everywhere.

So they're banning the hitman and 300 games, but not the hitman and 300 films, and they're banning the 50 cent game, but not his music?

I'm surprised that someone over at Thailand actually remembers Killer 7.

Who the f**k could get any murder ideas from Killer 7? Are there people wandering around seeing mummified corpses dangling from the ceiling talking about how tight a spot they're in?

I wish they would ban those games here also, but really who cares what Thailand does? Could they possibly hold any influence in how other countries deal with "violent" media?

They should ban Sagat from Street Fighter IV.

"I'm surprised that someone over at Thailand actually remembers Killer 7."

They don't. The Thai Ministry of Culture's "report" on violent games is plagiarized from an American one. It merely copied a list of violent games from, I think Boston, and is using that as the basis for this banning.

Yes, Thailand doesn't even have any firsthand knowledge about what it has banned.

wow.just.........wow.As riduculous of a plan as it is,maybe if they did stop selling games in tailand all together, just maybe that would be overall beneficial.Maybe once people realise that violent fucked up crimes happen even without video games to blame them on,maybe those the world will grow up.Sigh, but realistickly, people who already blame societies problems on digital entertainment will never learn the folly of thier severally flawed asinine logic.Governments and politicians will never change, not untill our generation,a generation of people raised on media, who understand what games are,get old enough to take the positions held by our current representatives. Its a shame really.

as randombullseye said, what about the other hitman games, in particular hitman 2, which was partly censored even in non-retarded countries...

More amusingly, GTA IV was what caused this mess to begin with and it isn't banned.

Clearly, GTA IV's damage has already been done. No use in banning it now. But by banning everything else, they'll prevent troubled youngsters from getting any other fishy ideas...

I wanted to make a joke about how only like 5 people in Thailand own Killer 7 anyway but it's kinda been beaten into the ground at this point. The game is better than people in this thread are giving it credit for though. The gameplay is a bit archaic but it's interesting enough to tip the scales towards it being a worthy purchase. I mean, the game is like $10 so even if you hate it you only paid 1/6th of what you would've for a new copy of Madden.

'GTA4' was not banned because it was voluntarily pulled from store shelves shortly after the taxi incident occurred.

Also, lol @ Thailand.

Criticising the Thai government is a bit like pissing in the wind, seeing as it's a military based dictatorship. Unlike say Australia and Germany who both routinely ban violent games. Though the Thais are both poorer and less white than ourselves, so let's make an example of them.

they can't stop selling games in Thailand, since then piracy would increase.

And hell, you think pirates in Thailand can't find Killer7 or Hitman to download and play?
