I'm a college student and freelance knife salesman with unrealistic ambitions. I was the lead singer in a go nowhere garage band, I write screenplays, that sort of thing. I'm... passionate? I guess? And creative? And honestly pretty pretentious. I'm also not the sort of person you want to discuss politics with if you disagree with me. And of course I love games, movies, and music. Games probably take third place out of those three, and yet I often find myself spending much more time playing games than watching movies or listening to music. I want to say the first real game I ever played was Earthworm Jim for the PC, a classic, and then naturally I had Pokemon Red for the Gameboy Color. I go to movies or read books when I want to get swept up in a story, I go to music when I want the something pure and emotional, but I think I actually like games so much because in a way they're incomplete. There's an empty space for you to fill, room for you to express something or experience something, and as a creative person I find that fascinating. You read books, you watch films, you listen to music, but you play games, and they're designed with your choices in mind. As somebody who has made both short films and written a lot of songs, I know that creating those things is about filtering something through my own ego 99% of the time. But games (at least the good ones) are about the audience 100%. It's a totally selfless art form. And that's why I think it's really important, even though lots of the games I play are fucking stupid, let's be honest.
My favorite games are: Deus Ex, Metal Gear Solid 3, Majora's Mask, Wind Waker, Half-Life 2, Super Meat Boy, Minecraft, the Super Smash Bros games, Jak 3, Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal, Iji, Mondo Agency, GTA: San Andreas, Spelunky, The Binding of Isaac, Barkley: Shut Up and Jam! Gaiden, Vampire:The Masquerade: Bloodlines, Snood, STALKER, Team Fortress 2, Silent Hill 2, Resident Evil 1 and 4, Tetris, Earthworm Jim, Super Mario Bros 3, Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, Lego Racers (that game was the shit), Alien Hominid, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, TF2, Portal, Battlefront, Worms, Rock Band, Marvel vs Capcom 2, Viewtiful Joe, Bit Trip Runner and The Spore Creature Creator but definitely not the actual "game".
