US retailer Target has 40GB PS3 information in its system photo

You know that 40GB PS3 that we all love/hate? Yeah, the one that the whole world has except for the Americans. Well, now some information leaked from US retailer Target shows an October 28th "in-stock date" for the $400 system.

Engadget has linked to some pictures from Target's internal systems, showing that the 40GB PS3 system is indeed coming to America. One picture shows a bit of text that says:

DESC: PS3 40GB SPIDER...

This could have something to do with the rumored Spider-Man 3 Blu-ray disc pack-in that we've heard rumors about. Yeah, I know -- big deal. But, it's better than our last pack-in! If this is true, it would put one of Destructoid's best running jokes to bed. What a shame.

As you may already know, the system will come with only two USB 2.0 ports, HDMI and Wi-fi, no memory card ports, and no PS2 backwards compatibility, but should serve the American electronics-addicted holiday consumer well with its new lower price point.

Hit the jump for more pictures.

I wanna know how expensive including the PS2's Emotion chip really was now that THAT system is down around $100 at retail or will be soon. WTF. I WANT BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY, DAMN IT!

Sigh.

Ratchet & Clank and Drake's Fortune will make this hard for a tech slut such as myself to pass up. Especially since $400 is my breaking point for this kinda stuff.

Sigh.

I'm sorry, are you saying that Spider-Man 3 is better than Talladega Knights? It wasn't even better than From Justin To Kelly....

The PS3 will always be a Talladega Nights player. Always.

@Prof. Pew: Talladega Knights is also acceptable.

wait a minute..? not backwards compatible. that's a loss right there. that would be a horrible decision for anyone to buy that. for the most part and generally speaking.

Is that really how you say "Price Scanner" in Spanish? It looks like a gag from "Airplane."

Yea, this is getting ridiculous. Don't they realize this can potentially alienate consumers by way of confusion? All these fucking models. When I got my PS3 at Gamestop, they didn't have a fucking clue what came with what package, and back then it was the 60 or 20 gb model. Now the dumb fucks at Gamestop are really going to be lost. 3 different configurations, all different ports and shit, backward compatibility. Those guys have the worst job ever.

I dunno, for the people who already have a ps2, and just want a cheap PS3 to drop in a big HDD, this sounds pretty good >.>

So $400 is about £200, a price I might consider a punt, especially as I already have a PS2. So why Sony is the 40gb version set at £299.99 in the UK?

@chado53
Ya it is... y'know, except for those who already have a fine working PS2 and would rather spend less money on a PS3 and switch between the consoles than have the convenience of having just one Console...

Sure, the PS3 gets blasted for including the Blu-ray, while the 360 is praise as better for making HD-DVD a choice, but when Sony decides to give gamers a choice for Backwards compatiability, poeple blast it.

@whiteboy0869
Well if i recall, the 60GB is only avaible while supplies last, after which it will be phased out and there will only have the 80GB and 40GB, with a $200 price difference (as oppose to 100, for the orginal 60 and 20); the 60GB being phased out is something they've been saying since the price dropped, and i don't recall hearing anything about that changing... so it's gonna be 2 SKU's not 3

All this talk about a confusing amount of skus is stupid, there are 2 PS3s, 40Gb and 80Gb, 60s will all be gone soon and 20s have been dead forever (in stores, you can find anything on the internet.)
The fact that they will not one 360 unit die before bringing a new one in, HDMI or no? 20 or 120 gigs? falcon or no? You have to be one of us geniuses to know how to find a premium with hdmi and falcon chips.

I don't think this extra SKU will be very popular once the common consumer finds out it's a "gimped" PS3. Sacrificing functionality still isn't the way to go...find other ways to cut costs...like cut your stupid ad campaigns, or axe a few of the terrible games you've let release. I'm sure you could afford to match the 360s range then eh?
