US PS3 sales shoot up 300 percent photo

We already knew that the new PS3 Slim was doing rather well in the land of the rising sun, but how are US audiences feeling about that shiny new package and price point? Well, pretty good, actually. In fact, GamesIndustry.Biz reports that the week Sony introduced the new model, sales actually shot up to 300 percent. Sony offered more details in a statement:

Our top retailers have reported a 300 per cent lift in PS3 hardware sales and an increase of 140 per cent in total hardware revenue across the PlayStation portfolio when comparing the first week of September to the week before the USD 299 price adjustment.

Sony also mentioned a recent survey from OTX GamePlan Insights, which indicates that five of the top ten most anticipated titles are in PS3 format, including God of War III, Final Fantasy XIII, Assassin's Creed II, Gran Turismo 5 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

It's so nice to see Sony doing well again, especially after hearing so many complaints these last few years about their overpriced hardware. I've owned a PS3 since the $599 days, and I've never regretted it -- it's always been a great console. The PS2 took a while to hit its stride too, remember, but once it did, it was smooth sailing for quite a while afterwards.

See? That is what happens when you listen to the requests of customers. Now, Backwards Compatabuhwhut.

Maybe Microsoft will do something nice in retaliation. Like make Gold worth it.

i'm excited to hear about all this. Looking forward to playing games online with some new people. I just hope PSN releases crossgame voice chat and party setup soon.

The big question is though, can Sony make it last? They've been doin' great so far. Hell, once I can scrap up 300 bucks, I might go buy a Slim myself.

Yay! Just like they said it, did take a while for ps2 to pick up! But we all know how that went :D Aside from the the top anticipitated Titles once things smooth out, with the ps3 potential and wider audience....you never know what will happen next. Yay! Optimism!

I work at Best Buy now, and you can't find a decent Blu-Ray player for under $300....some cost around $350 and higher. The new PS3 is a steal, but I'm still waiting for some kind of bundle with at least 1 free game

@Noah

I think there's news of a new bundle coming out. A 250 GB Slim with 1 game -- I think something like Uncharted. I don't remember where I read about it though.

good news for Sony!
(and for PS3 owners because more consoles out there generally means better 3rd party support!)

The PS2 never "took time" to hit its stride. It blasted through the gate at Mach speeds. It was always in the lead. Why do people keep acting like it was in any way a slow mover?

I hope this finally moves Gabe Newell to come to his senses and develop for the ps3.

Granted I can play the best versions of the games on PC, I still enjoy playing games on my PS3 more than any other platform.

actually it did have a slow start, there really weren't many great games and it was well known within the industry that the ps2 was notoriously hard to develop for, which was surprising since the ps1's great success came from it's ease to develop for.

As for myself and many other ps3 owners, the ps3 has done just as good, and in many opinions better than previous consoles in that it has provided us with more quality games than we can keep up with. Compare the first year of every Playstation1/2/3 title and you'll see it's not how you remember.

Every system takes a few years to hit it's "stride" with a few exceptions. And those exceptions usually fall to the momentum of the consoles who do. My goodness the PS1 had like nothing for the longest time, after 1 year the only rpg was Suikoden, and another year later we got Wild Arms. Not much else in other genres either.

The sales don't show that. The sales show that it trampled everyone out the gate. And unless I'm mistaken, didn't games like GTAIII and Metal Gear Solid 2 and Final Fantasy X come out within or just a little later than a year from the PS2 launch?

Playstation 2 stomped the shit out of everything right out the door. Well except when it was impossible to find one, but once it became common enough for people to find the good games were out and it was over. Not like the Gamecube was out any time near it. The only real competition the Playstation 2 had at launch was the DC, which fared rather poorly.

Who's talking about exclusives?

About the story, it's good that the PS3 is finally getting recognition like this. It sucked when it first came out, but I've enjoyed mine ever since I picked it up.

I would say it took the PS2 time to hit its stride. Sure, it sold well when it came out, but in that first year there were never enough consoles available, and it was really hard to even find any. Plus, most of the games that came out that first year were garbage. It wasn't until about a year into its lifespan that we finally got games like GTA 3, MGS 2, FFX, etc. That's when things really started to balance out.

In these comments, revisionist history.

People, after the Wii, the PS2 was fastest-selling console of all time. Fastest. Selling. Ever.

MGS2 was out yea, but FFX and GTA3(despite the fact I think that game sucked ass) came out over a year later.

sales wise idk, both the ps3 and ps2 sold out when they came out. I live in a major city and went every week at the shipment arrival at best buy till I could find one, finally I lucked out in mid-January. In contrast I was easily able to find my ps2 a month after launch.

Also, if I'm not mistaken, I think I remember Sony saying last year that the first few years of PS3 sales had beaten the first few of the PS2. The major difference is that now it's competing with 2 consoles that have more sales and have been out longer. Obviously the market has expanded.

probably not. I find it hard to believe the ps3 will reach the 100million units sold in 5 year mark that ps2 did.

but everything else I said is true, take it for what it's worth.

@ TheDreadHawk: Actually if you play any PS3 game (like resistance 2, Killzone 2, even the MAG beta) All being huge online games, there is absolutely NO LAG. And if there is, it's you. I always get lag on Xbox Live, and it's only 12 to 16 people matches. Pathetic, since we pay for IT.

Sounds reasonable, one of the PS3's stigmas was the lack of games, that has changed radically since launch specially last E3. The other was the high price, that in particular was a high obstacle to jump for most, specially during this recession, now with the price cut MS ruling over core will IMHO decline quickly, even with their respective price cuts, why? first because people are damn tired of the fear of their consoles dying any moment after you power them on, second because the RRoD and myriad of hardware problems that ail the X360 are a really hard stigma of it's own to beat, specially since MS has done jack to overcome it since launch, and no, their 3 year warranty is NOT and appropriate solution considering that in most cases the problem persists even after returning from service.

Each day I am closer and closer to trading in my Xbox360 for a PS3 Slim. I just want to wait and see how the PS3 Slim holds up. I remember the first batch of PS2 slims having problems with overheating.

P.S. I love you
