Update: first details emerge from Famitsu on Phantasy Star Zero DS photo

Don't bother to get excited if you are a fan of the retro Phantasy Star series (as you know I am, big time) -- this new DS title is unfortunately not a straightforward RPG as we might have hoped. Spotted on the NeoGAF forums this morning, here's the dirt straight from Famitsu:

- Phantasy Star Zero (DS)
Publisher: SEGA
Developer: Sonic Team?
Release: Winter 08
- Character Designer : Toshiyuki Kubooka (IdolMaster, Lunar)
- Scenario : Tooru Shiwasu (formerly in charge of the online quest on the original PSO, now a writer)
- Scenario : Teru Arai (mystery novels writer)
- New in the PSO series
- Multi play over Nintendo WiFi connection
- Chat system supports sending of stylus sketches (Something like Pictochat)
- Blow into DS mic to send msg (??)
- Huge Dragon: Rayburn

I'm sorry to say this because I know I will offend the fans of it, but I wish the Phantasy Star Online series would die a horrible, wretched, screaming death. Not because they are bad games, but because I want the games back that I grew up with and that revolutionized the way I looked at RPGs. Before you start bashing me, I'm bitter and old, so give me a break.

Anyway, enough of my whining -- are you excited to play this series on DS?I have to admit I am curious to see how it looks. We'll bring you more details as soon as they come to light.

[Update -- check out Dtoid community member Toneman's blog for an actual scan with some screenshots.]

[Thanks, Adam]

Boo. How hard is it to make a traditional Phantasy Star game?

No, I'm not excited. Thanks for the warning not to be, though. Excited, that is. I, too, am a bitter and old fan of the Phantasy Star series.
As such, it strikes me as stupid in the way that only Sega can be stupid that they would look at all of the big old school RPG releases making a big splash on the DS (FF III, IV, Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest) and make the conscious decision to NOT capitalise on the trend but rather to give us some watered down PSO nonsense.

Blowing the DS mic to send the message? really? are there no free buttons or are we just trying to make something so simple as a button press get really... odd?

On the bright side, this will meen that Sonic Team will not be able to ritualy rape your childhood again.

I'd rather the saga of PS be forever closed than that.

It's probably going to turn out similar to Phantasy Star Portable. Despite the trend of re-releasing games...the Monster Hunter-esque games trump it in popularity. Sega is just following the sure thing right now.

I hate PSO. I want my Phantasy Star V. And really, that's all I can add as a comment to this.

@kapshhh:
Harder than you might think, given that the kiddies today aren't into intricate old-fashioned JRPG gameplay anymore.

If this is like the Dreamcast PSO, I'll be a happy camper.

Will it be sprite-based or 3D? I'm not a big fan of 3D stuff on the DS unless it's stuff like in the Pokemon games.

I had fun with the first PSO on the dreamcast. Then the gameshark hacks came and essentially broke the game.

I also still believe that I'm probably the only person that liked PSIII. I seriously spent 100+ hours getting all 4 different lineage paths.

PS1-4(yes, in a way, even 3) = awesome

PSO is derivative, really nothing like the old PS franchise except for key words like 'meseta' and have about as much personality as a rock that's been in the sun too long.

I haven't really followed the PSO series too much (only had PSO for the gamecube, never got into Universe), and I'll have to agree with almost everyone else here that there really needs to be a Phantasy Star V. Something that makes the jump from 2d to 3d, like Final Fantasy VI-VII would suffice, although in this day and age it would be something more like a jump from VI-XII. At any rate, I would pick up a Traditional Phantasy Star game over the glorified Hack 'n' Slash series any day.

what a bunch of ass fucks...why change something that has been so great. Phantasy star was one of the first rpgs I ever played and know they go and throw dog shit in my face.

I'll get it. I liked PSO.

Hating PSO because it's not PS5 is like hating Super Smash Bros. Brawl because it's not Kid Icarus 2. There's about as much connection between the two sets of games and gameplay styles.

Segal dropped the ball by not bringing back the old skool PS RPGs. They could have been as big as Final Fantasy - Instead, they rehash the same crappy diablo clone over and over again.

Oh well, its pretty consistent with the rest of their games

I'd like to see some screens and gameplay footage in the near future. Who knows? It might be a decent RPG.

The Phantasy Star RPG crowd can suck my balls, two times! turn based RPG's are boring as hell (IMO).

But PSO is one of the greatest games of all time! This looks like a polished PSO for DS to cash in on Monster Hunter.

If they stay true to the promise of multi-player via wi-fi, this could actually be one of the best games ever made!

SERIOUSLY!

I feel like they pretty much sealed the deal on the original universe of Phantasy Star with the way things played out in PSIV. I'm sure that they could put another twist into play and get another couple of games out of it, but I'm pretty happy with the way things played out.

I'd like to see a traditional Phantasy Star RPG set in the PSO universe, with something similar to Eternal Sonata's battle system... and graphics.

Haha, nice post. I'm also a bitter and old Phantasy Star purist. Your words about PSO dying a horrible death really made me feel fine. I even own a website about the old PS games:
