Don't bother to get excited if you are a fan of the retro Phantasy Star series (as you know I am, big time) -- this new DS title is unfortunately not a straightforward RPG as we might have hoped. Spotted on the NeoGAF forums this morning, here's the dirt straight from Famitsu:
- Phantasy Star Zero (DS)
Publisher: SEGA
Developer: Sonic Team?
Release: Winter 08
- Character Designer : Toshiyuki Kubooka (IdolMaster, Lunar)
- Scenario : Tooru Shiwasu (formerly in charge of the online quest on the original PSO, now a writer)
- Scenario : Teru Arai (mystery novels writer)
- New in the PSO series
- Multi play over Nintendo WiFi connection
- Chat system supports sending of stylus sketches (Something like Pictochat)
- Blow into DS mic to send msg (??)
- Huge Dragon: Rayburn
I'm sorry to say this because I know I will offend the fans of it, but I wish the Phantasy Star Online series would die a horrible, wretched, screaming death. Not because they are bad games, but because I want the games back that I grew up with and that revolutionized the way I looked at RPGs. Before you start bashing me, I'm bitter and old, so give me a break.
Anyway, enough of my whining -- are you excited to play this series on DS?I have to admit I am curious to see how it looks. We'll bring you more details as soon as they come to light.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
As such, it strikes me as stupid in the way that only Sega can be stupid that they would look at all of the big old school RPG releases making a big splash on the DS (FF III, IV, Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest) and make the conscious decision to NOT capitalise on the trend but rather to give us some watered down PSO nonsense.
I'd rather the saga of PS be forever closed than that.
Harder than you might think, given that the kiddies today aren't into intricate old-fashioned JRPG gameplay anymore.
I also still believe that I'm probably the only person that liked PSIII. I seriously spent 100+ hours getting all 4 different lineage paths.
PSO is derivative, really nothing like the old PS franchise except for key words like 'meseta' and have about as much personality as a rock that's been in the sun too long.
Hating PSO because it's not PS5 is like hating Super Smash Bros. Brawl because it's not Kid Icarus 2. There's about as much connection between the two sets of games and gameplay styles.
i bought Phantasy star universe since it was the first ps game with an offline component i could play since ps4.
it's mostly unplayed, it's so fucking terrible.
pso must die.
Oh well, its pretty consistent with the rest of their games
Steven Seagal dropping the ball?!? MADNESS!
But PSO is one of the greatest games of all time! This looks like a polished PSO for DS to cash in on Monster Hunter.
If they stay true to the promise of multi-player via wi-fi, this could actually be one of the best games ever made!
SERIOUSLY!
I'd like to see a traditional Phantasy Star RPG set in the PSO universe, with something similar to Eternal Sonata's battle system... and graphics.
