UPDATE! Dragon Quest Swords scans translated by a Dtoid reader! photo

Update: WestCabaretDrive has posted translations of the scans in the comments below (Thank you *so* much!), so know you know what the Japanese know. Arm the planes!

Original story:

JeuxFrance has pillaged two fresh scans from a Japanese magazine which further explains what Dragon Quest Swords on the Wii is all about and how the controls will work. However, there's a slight problem. Neither the French or I speak a word of Japanese, so please join me in oogling the scans for a clue of what the hell we are looking at.

From what we can deduce, you can also use a shield to block projectiles and enemy attacks (presumably a button mode of the Wiimote as you'll be walking with the nunchuck?) and there's a sword mana meter ... for massive damage. Sorry, I couldn't resist. The DS DragonQuest Slime Tank game was really enjoyable, so we're hoping this game keeps the good stuff coming or we'll be sending Erdrick straight to eBay.

Trivial Dragon Warrior trivia of no use whatsoever: the hero's name is Roto in Japanese, which also means "broken" in Spanish. Not exactly reassuring, puto.

Here's what I have for the first page:

FIRST PAGE
(across the top) On the Wii, Dragon Quest's latest screens finally revealed!
(under the title in English)
Dragon Quest Sword
The mask princess and the mirror tower
(upper right paragraph)
As with the rest of the series up to DQVIII, game design and scenarios are by Yuuji Horii, and character design is by Akira Toriyama, as the main designers.
(big blue letters next to wiimote)
brandishing your sword, defeat monsters!
(left paragraph)
In Dragon Quest for the Wii, you wield the Wiimote like a sword, defeating monsters that appear for experience to continue your RPG adventure. Since the Wiimote gives a good feeling of response, waving it lightly is OK. Anyone can easily and simply play.
(caption in lower left corner) Attack slimes and level up! Even in the middle of combat your level increases.
(caption on right) The track of the sword cutting across the screen really feels like you're attacking!

Also the information box says that it's projected for a Spring 2007 release and is a one-player game. Also, it uses the Wiimote but not the nunchuck or the classic pad.

Here's some more of my badly worded translation:

SECOND PAGE
(big text) IN ADDITION TO ATTACKING WITH THE SWORD YOU CAN CAST SPELLS!
(top left paragraph) For fights where you use the controller, you don't only wave the sword around. Sometimes you hold up your shield to defend against attacks. Depending on the controls, you can also use magic. In addition to this, it seems as though there are surprising tricks hidden, though what those may be is not yet clear. In any case, there seems to be no mistake that battles are enriched by the change of intuitive controls.
(upper left caption) Lilipad (monster's name?) arrows deflected by the shield! If the shield blocks it, you don't take damage.
(red caption left of green guy) Holding up your shield, guard against arrow attacks!
(red caption below green guy) How will you handle striking the enemy's body?
(red caption on the left side) For far away monsters, attack with magic
(caption pointing up at picture with bats and slimes) For drakes too far away for your sword to reach, you can see that magic strikes.

So yeah, the rest of it is basically talking about the parts of the screen (HP bar, player info in the lower left) and how you can get "merits", whatever those are, by chaining your strikes.

When (see if) I get a Wii, this will probably be the game that sells it for me.
