I haven't seen a whole lot of CGI as bad as this since Colin's Bear Animation way back in the day...
And at least that one knew it was horrible.
For a hobbyist this sort of thing would be just fine, but that's ignoring the fact that this guy "studied games design" at college to try and get better at it. Barring the fact that "games design" is the wrong subject entirely, he hasn't really shown any considerable growth in ANY of the CG related fields.
Looking at his portfolio(seekingfate.com) I can't decide whether I should laugh or cry. The man clearly doesn't get how the game industry works, and I actually feel really sad for him. He probably has a lot of passion for games, and the CG industry in general, but that passion is so horribly misplaced.
Imagine you run a small game studio somewhere. A man walks in and hands you his portfolio. Let's pretend he's applying for character artist, because there's no such thing as a jack of all trades in this industry. Now, in his portfolio you can see that he doesn't actually have any art that could work in a game, and he doesn't actually distinguish between the many different jobs in the field. He lumps environment art with animation with character art with... programming? He put a PROGRAMMING section in his portfolio? BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Could you honestly say that you'd hire this man for the position?
I wouldn't trust this guy with the simplest of gruntwork, let alone actually letting him contribute to a game. He has no prior work experience on an actual shipped title, and his artwork is entirely too high-poly to be used in a game. I'm not exaggerating when I say I'd rate his work at about the same level as your average twelve year old that just downloaded a trial of 3DS Max to play around with it for a week or two.
We have a word for this kind of person around the internet: an "Idea Guy". They think that their ideas alone are enough to make it in the industry, and that actually trying to better yourself as an artist is for plebeians that never really go anywhere. Why bother studying anatomy so your faces don't send chills down someone's spine when you have so many great ideas?
I keep a list of portfolios that I look at whenever I start to lose hope in my artwork, or just want a good laugh, and this guy fits right in.
Supposedly there is a studio that wants to reboot ReBoot, sadly nothing has been heard of it for some time now.
Bunch of fucking sad haters.
He's trying to get into the game industry using (incredibly sub par) film work.
While it's true that the gap has gotten smaller, there's still a big difference between the two.
Commitment doesn't ship games. It's sad but it's true. If everyone that was so incredibly devoted to their art (Which I can honestly doubt he is) got a job, the CG industry would be a lot different.
Again, he's not some hobbyist somewhere. While it may seem like what he's doing would be tough for a single man team, it really isn't for someone that's actually serious about what they do.
And not to mention the fact that he hasn't worked on a single shipped project. That's the only way you can get a job in this industry, even if you've got the networking to back it up. That means you gotta' work the indie market first, then move on up. I can't imagine some indie studio hiring this guy for anything, let alone a bigger one.
I'd say there isn't enough negative criticism here, if anything.
He's not trying to crack into the CG industry here, so it actually makes a lot more sense.
For a single guy it's not bad, especially now that I know it's not some attempt to get hired at some studio.
So yeah, you can ignore all those little wordy bits like you probably already did.
Wait... this post was a really long time ago. There's probably not going to be anyone else reading this ever anyway.
So I guess that means I win?
