Unseen 64: screenshots of beta/unreleased games = your entire night shot photo
     WHAAAAAAT?

This might surprise a lot of people, but a stork doesn't bring video games. A lot of talented people actually get together in a room and hump. Nine months later, one of them pushes a game from between his or her legs. It's quite a beautiful little miracle.

Unseen 64 is a fantastic site dedicated to showing us the miracle of video game life. An ever growing collection of scans and screenshots of beta and unreleased games, it contains images of some of your favorites in forms you might not even recognize them. The image up there? Some game called Halo: Combat Evolved. Evolved indeed.

The site appears to be in Italian, but you don't need someone to tell you that early versions of Link from Ocarina of Time would make the baby Jesus cry. So go on. Spend three hours looking at the screen shots like I did. Just don't say I didn't warn you.

Yeah, when Halo was still a RTS. I've seen video of that, where the marines were jumping around like fleas.

And man, I still remember the reactions when the screens for the GBC version of Resident Evil hit the news sites. That was an amusing week.

nice find. I just spent 45 minutes on that site. so much time wasted. And I think Halo turned out really good compared to what they were showing in those early versions. But hey, an RTS is around the corner coming from Ensemble Studios so it will all be good.

It was interesting to see the the games that started on one console them came out on a different one later on. Too Human on PS1, haha. and now its being talked about for the 360. it went from PS to gamecube, to xbox. now it is in limbo.

I don't think halo was ever an RTS. I first heard about it probably around 1999-2000 in an australian PC gaming magazine, and it was already a FPS back then. I can't remember the exact details of the article, and I doubt I still have the mag, but I remember thinking how goddamn badass it was going to be. I think that could be a major source of my resentment towards the first xbox.

That site did remind me of mystical ninja starring goemon on the N64. GODFUCKINGDAMN does the VC need that game.

It's actually a well known fact that halo started development as an RTS.

ok, how's this? It's only from bungie...

Bungie Studios later stated an even earlier development build of the game centered on real-time strategy and was "basically Myth in a sci-fi universe."[54]http://bungie.net/Inside/CustomPage.aspx?section=History&subsection=Main&page=6

or this from Bungie's own X06 entry:

Bungie has been working with Ensemble primarily in the area of the game's fiction to help inspire the story and ensure continuity with the existing Halo Universe. Aside from that, Ensemble is applying their skills to deliver a great Halo experience in a whole new genre, which is ironically where Halo began in the first place. If you've seen some of the very early Halo videos out there, you might recall that before it ever became an FPS, it was in fact designed as an RTS (building off of Bungie's experience with the Myth franchise). Now, many years later, Ensemble is able to take the franchise full circle and bring it back to the place where it all began.

I can find more from Bungie's own website at your convenience...or you could just accept that what you thought you knew might not be true ;)

Halo started as a RTS for PC, then it changed to a FPS for PC, then Microsoft gotthem to switch it to be a FPS for the XBox.

The thing that surprised me was that Shenmue was originally going to be a Sega Saturn game and good looking for a Saturn game at that. Makes me want a third one so much more.

Actually, Halo started as an RTS for the Mac. Bungie had make a couple of Mac games previously to Halo.

Holy shit. The T-Rex tech demo reminds me of the first demo that followed with my PSX.

Wow...

Seeing the screens of that Aliens FPS for ps2 made me depressed. The gaming world could always use another Aliens based fps.

oh well, down the highway I go...

So... am I the only one who's immensely amused by the fact that this website has the word "Pagina, Pagina" written all over it?

After playing RE:0 on GC, I'd actually much rather play the original way they had it, like th PS1 versions. That game wasn't that scary, but with the old creepy MIDI music and sound effects, I think it could have been much better. Hell, I'd love to play a game just like RE2 in this day and age, even with those shitty graphics. Capcom should just make a division that pumps out games like the old RE's, and I'd be sound as a pound.

Halo was most definetly an RTS before. I've seen a video of a few guys from Bungie playing with the RTS one and joking around. I'll see if I can find it.

I dunno about the whole RTS thing and those Youtube videos don't do much for me. What's even more disturbing is the lack of mention of it being a RTS in any of the previously released magazine articles in Computer Gaming World or MacFormat.

Have a look for yourself and tell me if you see RTS in there somewhere. I remember watching this game back in 9th grade (around 1999) and the videos looked kick ass at the time. Especially the ones for the warthog and the banshee and ghost. Too bad the beam sword was dropped from the first Halo. I was really disappointed with how it turned out considering what it was supposed to be.
