Anyone remember when Ubisoft ported Unreal Engine 2 to the Wii for Red Steel? That worked out pretty well, right? Right ... ? Speaking to Kikizo, Epic's Mark Rein confirms that someone, somewhere, is actually trying to port Unreal Engine 3 to Nintendo's console. "I know one of our licensee who's giving it a shot," Rein said of the mystery developer. "It's their own port, in the same way Ubisoft brought Unreal Engine 2 to the Wii." Anyone want to take a guess as to which licensee Rein might be talking about? And better yet, someone answer this doozy of a question: Why bother? [Via Kotaku]

Red Steel was unfortunately very poorly made. UE3 should make Red Steel 2 better then?
I'm hoping Red Steel 2 makes the grade. I defend Red Steel to death and still play it, but then again I just really don't want to admit I spent £40 on a bad game. Metroid Prime 3 eventually killed it for me.
well i hear the Wii has the same graphics card as the PS3. Is that true?
they'll be using the engine for a new mario golf game.
That picture would actually be if the UE3 was put on the blur-tastic N64.
I read a new Turok game uses Unreal Engine 3. It would be neat if they went back to basics on that.
I vote Quazal
Why bother? Well, it's a newer, more refined engine that is more capable than UE2.
My question is: why not?
I wouldn't be surprised if it's Ubisoft trying to work it out for Red Steel 2.
everyone hope to god this doesn't come out...cause everyone knows it can't happen. OR whatever comes out as the final product definetely can't be called unreal engine 2.
Well they're using the Unreal 3 engine to make the next Mortal Kombat game. From what I recall, they plan on releasing it for all next-gen consoles, including the Wii. I could be wrong, but that would be my guess for the first Unreal 3 Wii game (if it's done anyways).
Now the graphics whroes will realize that there's more to innovation than pretty pictures and resolution.
i for one cant wait for roboblitz or hour of victory wii.
maybe dennis dyack....mumble, mumble, lawsuit mumble, lawsuit, mumble funny internet thing, ironic comment.
generic shared interner hyroglypy ftw!
I think that in order to get the Unreal Engine 3 to actually run on teh Wii they would have to take so many of the features out that there would be no reason to use that engine anymore. It would make more sense to go with the UE2.5 and add to it. Or even teh Source Engine would be a better choice. I mean, the UE3 just has so many things that the Wii won't be able to do to the effect that it should that there really is no point in going through the effort of making it work.
Brawl.
Lol If they ask me to teh overclox my wii... im in.
Didn't Matt Casamassina already say this on the Wii-k in Review yesterday? It's Brothers in Arms for the Wii.
The consideration isn't just that the Unreal 3 engine is purely aesthetic I'm sure from a design point of very it has more capabilities compared to the Unreal 2 and below engines.
does this mean the ps2 will get the unreal 3 engine as well? seeing how the ps2 / wii games are the same thing?
Go for it. Anything to stop looking like PS2 graphics. Mario Galaxy looks great. Let's see some more games raise the bar and stop being lazy ass PS2 ports.
i played the pc demo and wasn't impressed with the graphics at all.they should call it Unreal Tournament 2.1,it looks more like an extention for UT2
"Red Steel was unfortunately very poorly made."
Yet, fortunately, for the type of potential the Wii had and as new as the concept is to developers, for a launch title it sure did come out swinging.
A game engine isnt the graphics resolution... The internal structure and logic of the U3 engine should run on anything if ported correctly. The mesh and texture assets used to render on the xbox will kill a Wii but then again the Wii only needs to render half the pixels. Match the texture and mesh detail to the 480i and it'll run.
And well, yeah all the nice shaders will have to be replaced with fixed function versions, but the engine itself should run. It just wont look so flashy - but thats obvious.
@ Poonster: Who the fuck are you kidding? Not to put you down, as mine sucks, but what kind of PC set-up are you using? The game is absolutely gorgeous. It looks like Gears of War but improved. Great looking game. Get some glasses.
Yeah poonster's PC sucks thats for sure. But for Unreal engine 3 running on the Wii? BWAHAHAHAHAHA ridiculous! Our developpers have a hard time making Wii games look better than PS2, man the console sucks.
Does anyone here saying U3 on wii is stupid actually know jack shit about computer architecture or engine design? Could they explain how having a superior engine, with a much more advanced variety of options, would not be beneficial regardless of the system? Just because the wii doesn't have components as powerful as the 360, it doesn't mean it's not capable of decent visuals. Unless you can explain why this is pointless, I don't see your point in posting.
Sorry for crankiness, clusterfuck shitstorm at work this afternoon.
Whats sad is how Red Steel was the number 2 selling game on Wii for a long time
I hope it isn't being used for something simple like a JRPG, a minigame compilation or Barbie's Horse Adventures.
yeah, I'd like to see something useful come out of the unreal 3 engine getting ported to the wii, but it likely won't happen, it makes me sad.
well my pc doesnt suck thats for sure i'll admit my graphics card aint top of the line but i still think it looked average.i have an AMD Athlon 64 3800+ 2.4GHz Processor overclocked to 3.8GHz, 2 gigs of ram, 160 gig hard drive and a Nvidia Geforce 6600 gt vid card so the card does meet the specks, the demo ran smooth,i've played other games that look way better than UT3. fact is also the demos settings are locked to medium. i just think from all the hype it should look better.
i'll be playing the 360 version anyway..
@Lightthrower...your mom sure liked my pc when i was tappin her cornhole while she was watching scat videos.
I think memory would be more of a concern than CPU/GPU power. The Wii has way, way too little memory, and it's fragmented all over the place (a Nintendo tradition). General-purpose engines hate architectures like the Gamecube/Wii. It would work, but you'd have to strip out so much of the engine to get the footprint down, that you couldn't really call it the Unreal 3 Engine anymore.
With that said, the scripting facilities of the engine would be far more useful than the graphics renderer.
BTW, the mosaic filter would've been better for the story photo, rather than blur. Without proper anti-aliasing, the water effects in Twilight Princess made me want to hurl. Personally, I think SD with full anti-aliasing looks a lot better than HD without AA.
lol @ Pic
Is the Wii's graphic Card really that bad ? Super Mario Galaxy looked quite astonishing to me. Yes, it doesn't get the cake because either the PS3 or the 360 have stringer ones, but I think it does quite well. Also, it's not like I'm not content. I think Graphics go behind gameplay. But not that far.
Also, in before Rabid Wii-Fanboys.
Also, @Burnt Meatloaf: I use an SD Card. I have an emergency copy of all my Wii Savegames on my computer right now, and I use a nice 512 MB Card whi doubles the Wiis memory. That Card has about 1000 Blocks. The average game occupies maybe 100, the average save 1 Block. Works fine for me.
