What you're seeing isn't an official trailer for Epic's Gears of War 3, but you'd be hard pressed to tell.
Created by The Duo Group (in collaboration with a who slew of other folks), it's set to Johnny Cash's haunting cover of Nine Inch Nail's "Hurt." It follows in the footsteps of previous (and official) Gears promotional clips -- COG soldiers with their backs to a wall, facing unassailable odds against incoming Locust (and now Lambent) forces, and a depressing music bed. It's almost getting to the point where it's "paint by numbers," but damned if it doesn't work every time, so I don't see any reason to stop.
The trailer doesn't feature any actual assets from the upcoming title, as far as I can tell, instead designed using the Unreal Development Kit and existing art to create the original piece. Do you guys think it would work as an advertisement? I already have a tent set up in front of my local GameStop for the Gears 3 midnight launch.
The ads and promotional videos always make the Delta Squad look like they have mentally given up and are just wanting to die secretly and have the hopeless war be over.
But in the game they roll around going WOO and beat ass and act all tough.
Im confused about this NIN joke Drybones and thatboyjens are talking about. Cash's version actually is a cover, if that's what you meant. otherwise this is totally going over my head.
@falinter. True Story. This didn't hit home with me at all because the song choice was off, they chose the wrong character & the animation was ok. This song is too powerful for something like Gears of War. Also, Cole is the MOST lighthearted of the group, he IS the one rolling around going WOO! His hands were open the entire time and no water came out of the canteen when he drank it or dropped it.
I did really like the lights on all the COGs armor light up and you saw Marcus and Dom in the forest. That was pretty well done.
Wow. Epic should just flat-out steal this and do it in their own engine. It's so awesome that I wouldn't even feel the need to call them on stealing the concept (provided credit is provided where it's due!).
The books explain very well why Cole is all "whooooo I'm the Cole train baby!!!!!". The extended universe really fleshes his character out, especially in the latest book.
Last time i slept in a tent, i forgot to leave the windows open and woke up gasping for air @ 5AM.. So forgive me if i don't share your tent enthusiasm! :)
Isn't Hurt about someone's drug-fueled nadir of depression and self loathing? A tale of broken trust and ruined relationships? I'm trying to find the relevance to Gears.
I like how there's more of a reason to care for these characters trials through the trailers thanks to songs like this and Mad World than in the actual games.
In the games like falinator said they become somewhat unstoppable bad asses.
Uh...for people saying that Cash's cover is a "joke," it really was a song by NIN first and Cash covered it.
Granted, I think Cash did a better job (and this is coming from a huge NIN fan), but still...

Trailer was good, minus animations were a bit janky, as previously stated. I'd like to see a trailer done to that song, though.
Honestly the video doesn't do Cash's song justice.
Trent Reznor once said that he felt like Cash stole his girlfriend, because in his mind, Hurt was Johnny Cash's song after the cover. Lawl.
Mad World fit because it was about naivety, growing up, opening your eyes to a sad world, all juxtaposed with a seemingly impossible to win war.
Hurt on the other hand, is about drug addiction and the ramifications of that type of lifestyle. I don't see how that works with the trailer. A song about how you've fucked up your relationships shouldn't end with a visual of all of your buddies coming to save you and/or die with you. Those two are quite opposite.
The scenes, the music, even the tag line, it's all downright powerful. Well done.
I'm not sure if it raises my enthusiasm for the game, though. I somehow doubt it'll be as good as they want to make it seem. Still, if they continue with this theming and actually pull it off I'll have to pick it up.
It says "Johnny Cashs HAUNTING cover of NiNs "Hurt""
Cash is dead....haunting
Get it?
Thats the joke, thats it, and its not really even that funny.
Cash did a great job on the cover (even though he edits himself saying "I wear this crown of thorns" instead of "I wear this crown of shit," which is really non-Cash-like. Oh well, it was one of his final recordings and he was an old man, and im not gonna go looking for faults in good tunes.
What? Really, now, I don't expect that was what Nick was shooting for with the word "haunting". I'd give him more credit than that. Joystiq is more into the use of punchy puns that are mosttimes awful.

Great song choice though. Would love to see an official Gears trailer with Cash's version of Hurt.
Trying to see how many of us that will pick up on this?
But in the game they roll around going WOO and beat ass and act all tough.
Also nice job on the nine inch nails joke.
Maybe I just like tents. Don't judge me!
There saved you the trouble cowsick.

Fine fucking work.

/gears geek.
Now Billie Holiday's Strange Fruit. That'll bring a man to his knees.
@spykron
Good. I'm not alone.

It's not about the songs meaning or relevance. It's about the aura the song gives off. Mad World is about growing up. How is that relevant?
C'mon pal. Isn't that a silly thing to bring up?
In the games like falinator said they become somewhat unstoppable bad asses.
Wicked trailer BTW.

Yeah, even Trent Reznor himself said "It's not my song anymore...".
It's incredible cover/song that makes anything better. And it whacks one hell of a posthumous punch.
Trent Reznor once said that he felt like Cash stole his girlfriend, because in his mind, Hurt was Johnny Cash's song after the cover. Lawl.

His version on NIN's "Hurt" is good and powerful but for some reason I prefer the NIN version better. Decent vid though.
