The backwards compatibility-challenged PS3 we've all been talking about may be available in the US by November 2nd, if Hollywood Reporter is to be believed. Of course, our hero Capitan Obvious has to make a quick fly-by.
Sure, HR their unnamed "industry source", and a buyer from a major retailer was willing to say the same thing, but Destructoid has been all over this for months, and the real credit goes to Ars Technica for throwing this out there in early September.
HR says that he word is that SCEA has been dropping hints to retailers, letting them know that they should clear out current models to make way for these 40GB ones. Easier said than done, right?
As expected, this PS3 be the same version that our European friends are getting. That means that they will come with only two USB 2.0 ports, HDMI and Wi-fi, no memory card ports, and no PS2 backwards compatibility.

400$ should have been the price since launch
I would buy one for that price.
I am not drinking the kool-aid on this one, Sony. I don't understand why you removed the Memory Card slots and the two USB ports - because there is no way that cost you more than $15. Along with limiting backwards compatibility... - again Sony great job - ...I just hope the box is clearly marked. Oh and I want my last-gen rumble-enabled DualShock 3, or else (it is coming in '08 in Region 1 I know).
I want to see the results of a poll asking people if Sony has confused them with all their shenanigans.
I don't care about Backwards Compatibility...
Only two usb ports, I'ld go w/ the 80GB.
( If the Picture tells the Truth )
"400$ should have been the price since launch"
...Stay in school.
Honestly, I really expected it a few days sooner concurrent with the Ratchet and Clank release. Regardless, I look forward to having more PS3 owners out there. Perhaps 3rd party studios will begin looking a little harder at PS3 development in return. At least that is my hope. Quality titles are always welcome.
I think sony is still doing the $150 off if you sign up and use a sony style credit card, also theres a new 5 free bluray movie offer going.
$250 for a ps3 and 5 movies is a pretty fair deal, but I think you have to wait a couple months to get the $150 back. I think it works like a rebate.
we got our 40gb in the other day started to sell them this Wednesday coming I believe.
I would of got one if they kept the backwards compatibility.
does it play PSX games...because i still love my FFT...
If this is true, this may have me consider buying a PS3...OR IF I HAD JUST WON THAT DAMN GOD OF WAR BETRAYAL CONTEST, I WOULDN'T BE IN THIS DILLEMA.
Great, a new product for core-tards to buy. This is one step up from the gimped 20GB unit, except that unit at least had backwards compatibility.
i guess the save 15-2o bucks but go down with the price around 2oo$ does it really pay off??
the people would buy a fully fletched 4o gig for 42o$ either and sony would still just lose 18o$ on one PS3.
18o= 2o for parts and BC - 2oo price drop ( i think its all a total hardcore loss)
@handicapable:I bought it @600€
Anyone that doesn't think BC matters, consider the PS2's library.
Anyone who still has a PS2 is looking at a PS3 and considering, "Well, I already have these games, and it's supposed to play them, so why not get it so I can finally ditch the PS2?"
And I think there's this big deficiency gap in the PS3. People can go buy PSX games off of the PSN store, but they can't play their PS2 games? WTF? You're offering a genuinely beneficial service that makes you money, and it only applies to decade old games?
$400 would be a reasonable price if it had the game I wanted and BC, but since there really are no games out yet or coming soon that makes me want to buy the system and no backwards compatibility I won't be picking one of these up.
If they remove BC altogether eventually, I probably just won't end up getting a PS3. I like my PS2 games too much and I don't want to have to make room for my PS2 and PS3 in my already crowded entertainment center.
No Backwards Compatability...count me out. SONY, you are finally bringing your console to a reasonable price, one at which this PS2 enthusiast(myself) might consider buying it. Then you cut out BC...plain retarded. I am only going to shell out 4 bills(which is still a lot of money) for a system that support my huge PS2 library. I've already rehabilitated by PS2(re-aligned eye, cleaned, etc.) a dozen times in the last 6 years...I was hoping getting a PS3 would insure me years more of my PS2 games and great, forthcoming PS3 titles. Nope...too much to ask from SCEA. SONY is doing everything it can to drive this Wii owner to choose XBOX360 as his second console of choice. What happened to that company that made the PS1 and PS2...I miss the old, realistic SONY. You f'ed the gamers .

When did they decide that gamers were idiots and would shell out so much for so very little value.
I have BC on my 60GB...
I haven't used it for PS2 games EVAR.
( Next ) Gen System... ( Next ) Gen Games...
The developers probably want some loyalty to ( PS3 Titles ) from Sony. Instead of buying old school games for $15 for your PS3... Get a PS3 game and give us ( Developers ) $59.
Besides that people probably sell all their PS2 Equipment & Games to move up because of the price. Because if people can afford the LOW PS2 price selling like ( HotCakes ) now. You know they probably can't afford the P$3's.
@gareson: it was the they when kutaragi-san wanted us to enter the 4th dimenson: a place b3yond rationality
Whoever is in charge of getting PS3 into our homes should be shot. What is their strategy? Confuse the shit out of everyone. BC is one of the best features of PS2/PS3... I'm blow away they are taking this away now. I'm glad I have the 60gig model, but what worries me is down the line a few years, when the PS3 shits the bed, I don't want to give up my BC. We'd be forced to by one of these hack models.
I've always preferred to game on Playstation... and now all I do is complain about PS3. I've never enjoyed playing on xbox. 360 is where I'm spending most of my gaming time now. You got to hand it to microsoft, they made a shitty piece of hardware but the content is great. Any multiplatform purchase is pretty much going to go to them (Half Life Orange Box...). They said they weren't going to focus on BC, yet we eventually were able to play Panzer Dragon Orta on the thing. Who would of thought that as time passes, and you make your product better... it does well. With PS3, seems to think the future lies in downgrading.
And fuck them for saying something about how their library of 65 titles makes up for the loss of BC. 64 unpolished / unfinished games. 10 of which are NBA games. Sweet. Thanks. At least we get Ratchet and Clank at the end of the month, which supports the rumble controller, which doesn't come out until spring 08. Maybe I'll wait to pick it up until then. Sweet strategy guys. I feel completely burned by Playstation.
I love how more and more people are becoming brainwashed by corporate thinking. "The developers would rather you bought new games." Who cares what the develpers want? It should be about the consumer. I'm not done with my PS2 yet, but I don't have room for a 360, PS2, and PS3 in my entertainment center. The price was right with bc, but not without. It's also looking like a trend started with the 360, which you can play most but not all of the old XBOX titles (the good ones anyway). Now no bc for Sony. Oh well, there's always Nintendo - for now.
@ Punk0
It was just a thought.
Look @ everything in our world is centered by corrupt people, ohh & CA$H. Who Don't care about their consumers saftey, job security, or citizens.
( Mattel, China, USA, Microsoft, & Sony )
All the same.
$$$$$
Well well well look who it is...
Well the thing about the loss of BC in the $400 model is the loss of BC is more then likely the reason WHY it can be sold at $400... throw in the hardware needed, or channel money away from more efficient hardeware development to softeware development to support BC and you end up needing to add to the price of the console. It's kind of a choice, do you want a cheaper console or do you want BC? it's kind of funny, poeple blasted the PS3 for making blu-ray built in and not giving poeple a choice, while praising the 360 for having the hardware as a seperate piece so you have a choice(thus making the console cheaper if you didn't get hddvd)... Now the PS3 is giving poeple the ability to CHOOSE between a cheaper console, or a regular console with BC, and poeple are up in arms. Just as not everyone cares about HDDVD, not everyone cares about BC. I think the only poeple who should really be concerned about BC are those without PS2's; god knows one of the main reasons i choose PS2 was because i never had a PS1.
Frankly, considering how i already have a PS2, i don't care much for BC, i'll just switch consoles when i want to play PS2... hell, since you can stand the consoles on their sides, i don't see how poeple have so much trouble fitting multiple consoles in their centers; they never seemed to take up THAT much space imo. only thing i really want included in the PS3, what wasn't in the orginal core, is the wi fi capabilities since it's very unlikely that where i put my PS3 is anywhere near a port; not THAT seems like a required feature, where as BC seems like more of luxury.
One thing that does consern me is the loss of the memory cards... though that kind of depends on how much space the save files would take on the hardrive... f it's very small then it's no big loss especially if i get a new hardrive... i do imagine that to be the case, if the save files don't do a big amount to filling up the hardrive then i'll be fine without memory cards. Also, don't care for Dual shock 3; never liked rumble.
Granted overall, i'm still not getting a PS3 at this time... not much time to play games and i still need to play Persona 3, Soul Nomad, and Zelda on my DS... so little time, so many games to play...
No backwards compatibility = FAIL
I'm scared enough to run my PS2 as it is for fear of it breaking
Not buying until FF7 Remake is confirmed.
Sony sound like they want out of the console market, judging by the way they are screwing us over. first a 20gb model is around and gets canceled, then the 60gb comes out, then the 80gb and now a bloody hack job anti BC 40gb model. This is beyond the joke now.
I heard they might be phasing out our 60gb model in U.K/EU, once the 40gb is out here (this could happen in the U.S too). If they release this piece of crap and do that phase out to the 60gb model, I'm afraid there will be no PS3 gaming for me...MGS4 or not...I don't care what's on it.
The people have spoken, Sony. Listen and adapt or perish in a mess.
they will add backwards compatibility later. with pure software, because people will bitch, and sony will give it to them.
people bitched about the price, they dropped it more than once so far, people bitched about no rumble, well there is rumble coming now. sony listens, and does what it can when it can. so i dont think any of us will be left out in the cold with their products, they are not apple, or microsoft.
stupid idiots are bitching. look at what you get. oh and btw, 360 is software bc emulation, there is not hardware bc in the 360 yet they did it.. so why wont sony?
40 gig, 20 more than 360, wifi which is 100 bucks extra on 360, blue ray hd gaming and video play back, oh no next gen format on the 360 native, the hd for 360 is another 170 and still pales next to the storage of blue ray.
and is it me, or are sony's up coming games just looking way better than the 360, little big planet, msg4, haze, infamous, eye of judgement, ratchet and clank, drake's uncharted, killzone 2, final fantasy and all the other exclusive rpgs that sony all ways gets. i mean. high def movies, and better games.. sony will win again, and sooner than i expect i bet..
Hmm Nov 2nd eh...
why thats just 10 days before a "certain to be epic Wii title" gets launched in the US on Nov 12.
Coinincidence ? I think not.
@hexfix93
Little Big Planet - Cool
MGS4 - Incredible, multiplatform (so sayeth the Workman)
Haze - Just another shooter
Infamous - Crackdown + magic
Eye of Judgment - For nerds, tiny niche market, low sales
Ratchet and Clank - Same old same old + shiny graphics (I know I'm in the minority in that opinion)
Uncharted - Interesting plot, dude raider, ugly girl still
Killzone 2 - really? No save film, no forge, no one liked the first one.
Yeah I mean the PS3 really does have a good collection of quality titles:
MGS 4
Motorstorm
Warhawk
FF XIII and Versus
Ratchet And Clank Future
Uncharted
Killzone 2 (I still dont know about this one, but it LOOKS good)
Gran Turismo 5 or whatever theyre calling the next one
plus a lot of the 360 games that everyone is all excited about are also coming out on the PS3.
And a blu ray player for 400 bucks is an absolute steal, whether you'll use it or not.
The BC doesn't bother me a touch, I have a PS2.
I think I'm getting a PS3!!
Like I said before, the PS3 could be made of solid gold and cost $1.99 and you all would still find something to complain about...Maybe it's time you see a little sunshine. Broke-ass idiots.
