Universal Pictures puts the brakes on BioShock film photo

Horrified at the idea of Gore Verbinski taking on the BioShock movie? I may have good news for you: according to Variety, the pre-production on the film has come to a screeching halt. Even some of the production staff have been let go, as it appears that budget concerns are an issue, as it was estimated that the film would cost $160 million to shoot within the US. Verbinski elaborated on the topic:

"We were asked by Universal to move the film outside the U.S. to take advantage of a tax credit," Verbinski said. "We are evaluating whether this is something we want to do. In the meantime, the film is in a holding pattern."

Verbenski actually stepped away from a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film in order to work on the BioShock project, which he has expressed his strong interest in making. There's no way to know whether this means the project is permanently derailed or merely just on hold, but for people strongly against the production of the BioShock film, it's a straw worth grasping at. Do you have any hope this movie will be made,or would you rather it stay buried beneath exorbitant production costs?

[Thanks Brian!]

Sure, it could work. Gore isn't exactly the worst person to make a fantastical movie.

I feel like the way that the story in Bioshock was presented and unfolded would theoretically transfer over to film pretty well. Whether or not it is done correctly and faithfully is another story though. I would be neutral if it was to be made. If it's good then awesome, if it sucks then who hasn't seen a bad videogame movie before?

I can can see gore v. Making this film. Through PotC he has experience with this sort of movie. I like that he wants to spend the money to make it right rather than save $ and deviate from the original setting (ie substitute Rapture for a generic location). I think making this movie is a pretty ballsh this when he could go for the surefire blockbuster pirates 4. I can always go for a great new scifi flick so I wish him the best of luck. That'd not to say I wouldn't want to see what alex Proyas, ridley Scott or cameron could do with it.

What's wrong with Hollywood? They keep green-lighting all these sub-par, low-budget video-game adaptations, and they cock-block any adaptations that actually had true potential (this and Halo).

Maybe this delay (if it is a delay and not a cancellation) will mean Guierllmo Del Toro might take up the reins.

C'mon, it's scary, actiony, eye candy with a dash of political elitism. Just imagine scenes with a Big Daddy in it. Yeah.

It really depends on the approach. A prequel could work pretty well I believe.

A Bioshock movie is a much better idea than a Shadow of the Colossus movie.

Why is it that all the potentially good video game movie concepts get put on hold, but all the crappy ones get made?

I want to see a script. He made PotC, which was good as a series (I never saw the thrid movie, but the first two were awesome). If made correctly, I could see this working. it's good knowing that he wants a big budget so it won't suck total cock, but once again a video game with great potential as a movie gets put on hold (a la Halo).

@Sharpless, because crappy ones don't require as much money as potentially good ones, thus quantity > quality. I guess that's how Hollywood works or something.

Find a good actor for Ryan and it will be better than the game.

It will only work if everyone who works on it is f'ing brilliant, and I'm not just saying that because I love it so much. Unless the people working on this can capture that utterly involved feeling that all great games and movies have (it's arguably easier to do in a game considering that you actually ARE involved) then it'll be pretty good. I think being able to see the protaganist will screw all that up though, if you could see yourself as a character (as opposed to it just being YOU) then the game wouldn't have been as good.

I'm probably not going to see it for the same reason I didn't see Dragonball: Revolution *shudder*

I don't see why filming it outside of the United States to keep production costs down should be a problem. I don't think filming elsewhere will effect the production value or anything about the quality of the movie and considering that it will likely all be filmed in constructed sets in a sound stage someplace its not like the audience is going to be able to tell whether or not the geographical location in which rapture is claimed to be located matches up with where the movie is filmed.

I'm happy about this, I really don't think you could capture the feel of the game on film without some drastic changes.

I'm amazed Hollywood productions still bother to attempt to film in the US anymore, barring absolultely necessary on-location shots. You can get prettier for cheaper in plenty of places around the globe.

Personally, I don't care where they go to film it, so long as it gets done and done well.

Its encouraging that Verbinski is really up for creating this film, and I really believe, that this could be the one to top all previous game to film adaption attempts. Bioshock has the great story with plenty of politics and intrigue, strong enough to withstand a decent film. It also has good characters, but doesn't really need a main character. What they could do perhaps, is tell the rise and fall of Rapture, through the eyes of a escaped survivor, possibly before the character in the Bioshock game returns to Rapture. On top of that, Hollywood love a good costume drama type film.

With Bioshock 2 due for xmas, looking gorgeous, I think the powers that be will get the wheels moving again, and hopefully we'll see this special film soon.

A few of you mention the hold on the Halo movie as well as this, but I don't think that the Halo story is original enough to make a descent movie. I mean it would basically be just another "the earth is awsome and acts like america in its policy with dealing with other life forms/countries foriegn, blow that shit up god damn it!"

why does everyone feel like everything successful needs/'deserves' to be standardized into movie format? maybe before when video games weren't advanced enough to adequately tell a story visually, and a movie would do better justice to a game's story, but now that's not the case, and if a story can be told in the game medium more effectively than cinema, fucking leave it alone.

also, halo had a wretched, uninspired storyline.

Gore turned an amusement park ride into a incredibly ($) succesfull franchise. If anyone is up tithe task of making a good game flick, it's him. With Bioshock he has the advantage of already having an interesting narative. I think the naysayers forget they don't have to we the film and just pretend it doesn't exist. For me, Im always hoping got the next fun piece of escapism.

Except for awards-caliber directors who would never do the movie, I think Gore Verbinski is actually a really good fit for a Bioshock movie. And he's passionate about it, taking it over a major payday in Pirates 4. If it has to be made I think he's the right person for it

Bioshock's greatest moment was a play on the structure of videogames. It's success was linked largely to the medium in which the story was told. It shouldn't be a movie, just like Watchmen shouldn't have been a movie.

Video games are pretty much interactive art. They still a story in a completely different manner than pretty much everything else. The really good one immerse the player into the world, letting you interact with the world and characters that books and movies can't provide. Although, I am not against a film version, it doesn't really matter to me if it gets made at all.

I see what you mean, but I don't know. I think that the twist would be subversive in the film medium too, although maybe only within the action genre where you do genuinely forget sometimes why the main character is killing all these people. In any case its always going to be an adaptation, and I feel that the narrative of Bioshock has strengths other than that twist.

Anyway, Verbinski should bring it to Australia, we've got the tax breaks over here, thats why Knowing and Wolverine (at least partly) were made here, and the Green Lantern movie is going to be too. I'm not sure how convincing a substitute Melbourne was for both Boston and NYC in Knowing, but a Bioshock movie would be filmed pretty much entirely on a sound stage so its not like locality even matters.

Dear God please don't let this film be made!! Bioshock is a game that I hold nearest and dearest to my heart. I know, I know, Mario on the original NES back when it was on the same cartridge as Duck Hunt is honestly what got me into video games. Hell, it's a hobby/passion that I still partake in heavily to this day. However, despite the Marios and the Zeldas that I have loved in the past, Bioshock officially holds the title as my favorite game ever. Everything from the constant need for exploring every nook and cranny of Rapture to the makeshift weapons and creepy music make Bioshock number 1 for me. Hell, I'm scared Bioshock 2 is gonna ruin Rapture for me, so a movie terrifies me.
