Undeniable failure: An open letter to Microsoft on the Xbox 360 Dpad photo

Following our controller episode of RetroforceGO!, I have received a surprising number of emails and messages regarding the Xbox 360 Dpad and the countless mods, DIY fixes, and third-party alternatives that exist to solve the problem. Shockingly enough, I've even heard from a few slobbering brain cancer victims who find nothing wrong with it.

Given the amount of feedback on this issue, I thought I'd take some time to address it further. Bear in mind that what you're about to read is not whining. Perhaps you mistake me for the average review reader. Instead, what lies after the jump is a wholly dissatisfied consumer -- someone who knows as much about gaming hardware as a good mechanic knows about internal combustion engines -- pointing a finger in the face of the big M and saying, "You f*cked up."

To understand what makes this component of the 360 controller so thoroughly useless, one needs to have some basic knowledge of how a controller works. I'm not going to go too far in depth on that, because you don't want to read a long post, and chances are you don't really care anyway. Go here if you're really interested.

To keep it simple, let's suffice it to say that most Dpads, as well as most controller buttons in general, pretty much work on the same principle. Push the button, complete the circuit, things happen on your TV screen. This is almost always achieved in the same manner:

Trust me, I've seen the inside of just about every controller you could name, and they're all more or less the same in this respect. Push the button, button pushes down rubber membrane with metal disc in it, life goes on. This rubber membrane is also what makes the button pop back up after you've pressed it. It's not exactly fascinating. The membrane is your Dpad, and the button is really only there to make it durable, pretty, etc.

Want to see how the 360 Dpad is different?

Um ... excuse me, WTF R U doin? What's this supposed to be? Instead of the button contacting the membrane directly, you've given us this barbell-type thing, essentially a middleman between our thumb and the circuitboard? Again, dear reader, I'm not going to bore you with the details. When you chuck your 360 controller across the room in frustration while trying to play something that uses the Dpad, you can peek inside its shattered remains and see for yourself.

Form should follow function, Microsoft. I don't care how nice you think it looks; if it doesn't work, then what's the point? Your engineering department needs some serious help. Feel free to fax me a job application. Better yet, maybe you should just fly me in for a visit so I can slap a few people around for a while.

However, despite the evidence, some people still make attempts to defend this abomination against God and gamer. They set the Internet ablaze, blinded by their fanboyism, with arguments like:

"It's not that bad. Mine works just fine."
Really? Tell us where you got it, because it's obviously not the same model that came with the other 99.997% of Xbox 360s on the market. You must know where to buy this special "doesn't suck" package.

"It's easy to fix. There are a bunch of simple mods you can do."
I know. Everybody knows. If you Google "360 controller fix," you'll find 307,000 results. Why do you think that might be? Maybe because sensible people are all in agreement that it's a miserable piece of shit?

Tell you what. I'd like to sell you a car. It's a great car. Oh, but the gas pedal is kind of iffy. Sometimes it makes the car go, but other times it's a brake pedal. Sometimes it makes the car go into reverse, sometimes it turns on the air conditioner. It usually does okay as a gas pedal, though. If you don't like it, you can rip the car apart and fix it yourself. Dumbass.

"Nobody really uses Dpads anymore anyway."
Wow. Do you really only play a couple different kinds of games?  Sure, I guess if I were content with nothing but Geometry Wars and [insert FPS] for the rest of my life, I wouldn't care, either. However, it just so happens that I like lots of different kinds of games, many of which use a Dpad.

If we're not supposed to use it, why did Microsoft put it there? If it's unnecessary, why is there one on every other controller on the market? One that works?

"Just use the analog stick."
Fuck you. No, no, really. Fuck you. I get that some of you whippersnappers cut your teeth on the N64's analog stick and don't really understand why your controller has a plus sign on it, but as long as there are games like Pac-Man CE, Street Fighter, 2D shooters, puzzle games, or anything remotely similar to those games coming out on any system in my console cabinet, the controller damn well better have a Dpad on it.

I don't eat my cereal with a snow shovel, and I don't play shmups and puzzle games with an analog stick.

"...But you're old. Isn't the analog stick more like an old arcade joystick?"
LOL. No.

"Nintendo owns the patent on the Dpad, so Microsoft couldn't give it a good one."
Bullshit. I'm no expert on what Nintendo does or does not hold the rights to, but maybe you should take a look through your controller drawer. See all those Dpads? Yeah, they're all the same on the inside. Refer to the above picture. That's basically how it works. Even on the shitty third-party ones. If Nintendo owns that design, they're sharing it with everyone on the planet but Microsoft.

"Stop bitching and use a third-party controller."
You know what's really sad? When the piece of shit, $20, GameStop-brand, no-name knockoff, made-in-Taiwan-and-sold-on-Canal-Street controller works ten times better than the one that came with your $400 system. Where is your god now?

It's sad that the controller I believe to otherwise be the best in history can't be used to play some of my favorite games. That Dpad is useless. You know it, I know it, and Microsoft knows it. So what do we do? Hope for a revision like we got with the original Xbox controller? Write them angry letters? Scream at the TV until our throats fall numb every time we lose a round of Puzzle Fighter for lack of decent control over the pieces?

I'm going to make fun of it in a post on Destructoid, that's what I'm gonna do. Talk shit about it on my podcast and hope someone at Microsoft hears me. Chances are they won't, but in the unlikely case that they do, I would encourage them to write me at topher-at-destructoid-dot-com and explain their fuckuppery once and for all.

So what's it going to be, Microsoft? Nintendo replaced countless Wiimote straps even though there was nothing wrong with them. Sony put rumble in the Sixaxis. It's your turn, fuckers. Hop to.

I always liked the Sega Genesis D-pad.

Yes the 360 d-pad is horrible, I agree. I have kind of gravitated to the analog sticks for the few fighters on the system, but you definitely need a good d-pad for Street Fighter games. I suppose a true purist would prefer an arcade style stick over a d-pad or analog stick for some games. Anyone try a Logitech 360 controller? The PS2 version is the best 3rd party controller out there.

How come this problem popped up for the 360 and not for the original Xbox? I took apart a Controller S and saw that the D-pad on it worked with the same "barbell-type thing" that you showed above.

When you try to use the thing it really makes you wonder how it even got past the initial testing, let alone make it out the door and onto the market and last 2.5 years without a fix. You would think Microsoft would take the time to make sure that the product they were releasing was at least up to minimum standards.

Oh right, 50% fail rate.. Microsoft you silly cunts.

Seriously though, fix the thing, because I am afraid I will break my controller if I try to do it myself.

The reason why I use the sideways wiimote and not the Gamecube controller for Brawl is because I fucking hate (HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE) using a stick for 2-d games.

So I will have to concur with your complaints on the D-Pad for the 360 controller. It blows.

Conversely, I've never found a problem with the PS2's D-Pad as others in this thread have. I play the hell out of Street Fighter 3 just fine on my PS2.

Kapkomi - Because the original XBox didn't have many popular games that required the use of the dpad.

The 360, on the other hand, has a lot of games downloadable over Live that might as well require the dpad.

...that's my theory, anyway.

I did a little research and apparently there is 2mm less space on the "wall" of the 360 dpad component, which gives it slightly less wiggle room than the controller S from xbox1, which somehow makes it less responsive. Other than that they both are identical. One of the mods I looked up involves shaving 2mm from the 360 dpad "wall" which makes it just like the controller S and a little less shitty.

I want to try one of these mods but they sounds kind of tricky and I really don't want to fuck up my controller.

I can understand why microsoft fucked up in the first place considering XBLA was only a hopefull idea and not a success at release. However the console has been out long enough now that it should have been fixed. The controller s for the original xbox was released quickly after what i like to call the jelly bean controller was berated in mass. So why the fuck cant they just get off their asses and address the problem of making their controller from damn near perfect to perfect. I know this is all repition but FUCK. When ikaruga comes out the problem is fully realized Microsoft offices WILL be raided, developers and hardware designers will know fear only an angry shmup community could create. Who is with me? f'n A man, f'n A.

D-Pads simply make fighting games better. I will never again play a fighting game with an analog stick. It's by-and-large retarded. Rotating a half-circle both ways on a D-pad is a hundred times easier. THE END.

I wouldnt say its useless... its fine for rpg games (just been playing lost odyssey, the analog stick is not great for menu's).

But i can see how nasty it would be for any real-time game. It does tend to screw up, and it feels horrible. The Playstation series has much better d-pads.

Also one last thing, the wired 360 controller is my favorite controller to plug into my computer to not play my not 3mu18t0rz. If microsoft fixed the dpad the 360 controller could easily EASILY domniate the PC controller market, even though most PC gamers despise controllers. O wellz, time will tell.

Initially, I couldn't think of what was so bad about this d-pad. Then I started remembering unresponsive controls and how frustrated I got and, oh, what buttons am I thinking of? Oh. Right. The d-pad. I've tried playing... shit, I can't remember, but I've tried playing games that allow for d-pad use, and I've- Nevermind. I'm bored. Yeah, you're right. The 360 controller is super-comfortable otherwise, though.

My 360s D-pad can be pretty iffy at times, but recently its been "OK" while playing COD4. I do beleive it is the best fitting controller Ive held; Playstation controllers seem like they were made for kids unless you put both your index and middle fingers on the L and R buttons, which is just awkward.

Also the sticks on my 360 pad are all loose, especially the left one that causes me to move ever slightly forward all the time.

I am reminded how bad the 360 D-Pad everytime I play a fighter on it. Virtual Fighter, StreetFighter all the same/ I need precision especially in Street fighter and having Ken fail to do a hadoken when the chips are down its beyond annoying.

Its sad anytime any fighter is announced I look at my PS controller and smile as there is a shining example of what a D-Pad should be.Its sad I've been playing Street fighter so long that half circle motions flow like water on any normal D-pad.

@deiga-the-semivaliant

The original Xbox had quite a few 2D fighting games (Capcom vs. SNK, Street Fighter III 3rd Strike, Guilty Gear XX #reload, Neo-Geo ports). In my opinion the 2D Fighting game genre is one of the most dependent on precise controls. I'd be certain that if there was a problem with the controller Fighting game fans would have made a equally big shit about it (or it could be that the only people that play fighting games anymore just use their own custom joysticks or pads)

Also are you sure about using a D-pad for Smash Bros.? The game really feels like it was made with a analog stick in mind.

I just had a weird discovery... The game that made me realize that the 360 Dpad is utter horse shit was Street Fighter II. Basically, I couldn't even beat the second opponent. Now, I don't claim to be great (or even good) at Street Fighter, but I can at least beat the regular Arcade mode.

But just now, I played not Street Fighter II on a not SNES emulator, and that shit worked fine. I was doing fireballs, and uppercuts and all that shit. Shit I couldn't do on the 360...

I don't know what it means, but it's quite strange. Maybe it's not the hardware, but maybe it lies within the software? I don't know, all I know is that there is a clear difference between how the 360 interprets input from the Dpad, and how not SNES9X with the XBCD drivers interprets it. Because that shit on the not emulator was surprisingly responsive.

The xbox 360 d-pad is not that bad, no no there is far worse that have had a reign of over 10 years it's called a sony gamepad.

the xbox 360 controller hey at least it's a d-pad not pretending to be 4 buttons that look like a d=pad that is sony utter failure called the PS1/ps2/ps3/psp d-pad.

In fact sony has not made a controler to this day with a fuctonal d-pad and in 1995 when all there is on the controler is a D-pad that is 100% controler suckage like the huge xbox 1 gamepads.

Then i can go on about the rest of sony horrible game pads but i solved that problem and got PS2 logitec game pads.

Nintendo has the best d-pad they invented the things.

But that's besides the point, my question still remains.

Why, despite being similarly designed, did the 360 D-pad end up worse then the Controller S D-pad?

Or is it just as bad and I haven't noticed?

The wall around the 360 dpad is apparently 2mm thicker than the S controller which means it has less wiggle room. Although the d-pads are exactly the same on both controllers, the 2mm less room on the 360 is apparently why it is so much worse.
