Undead Knights PSN 'demo' was actually the full game photo

I was cruising the PlayStation Store on Thursday and stumbled upon a demo for Tecmo's Undead Knights. Already quite interested in the game, I decided to download it and give it a whirl. You can imagine my surprise when I realized that, far from being just a level or two, I had access to the full bloody game.

That's right, somehow Sony had managed to put the full game up onto the PlayStation Store instead of a demo. Tecmo told us the final code hadn't even been approved yet, so quite how this mistake arose is beyond the grasp of anybody involved. Tecmo has now pulled the demo from the PlayStation Store, although it seems I'm not the only one to have accidentally downloaded the entire thing before the issue was addressed.

The fault seems to lie with SCEA, and with the PSPgo launch and massive PSN additions, I guess it's natural that mistakes happened. For once, it's a mistake that actually worked in the favor of consumers, and not the usual "my console just bricked" screw-up that often happens. Anyway, even though we caught this SNAFU on Thursday, we felt it was only fair to make sure Tecmo was in the clear before talking about it. We're not so heartless as to say "HAY GAIZ YOU CAN STEAL THIS!" Still, quite a crazy story, huh?

If you downloaded it before the cock-up was resolved, you can count yourself lucky, especially since the game is quite badass. As for me ... I guess I don't have to request a review copy now.

Wait for it, Sony will start banning people for having downloaded it in the small timeframe it was "free".
Oh well, looks like dodgy demos aren't restricted to the Xbox.

How early was this? I think what I downloaded was only the demo though since it stopped after chapter 2. I wish I did download the full version, the game was a nice mix of Dynasty Warriors, Overlord, and Dead Rising.

wow, a major screwup on Sony's part. I would be so pissed if I were Tecmo.

They better not ban people for downloading it when they didn't even know it was the full game.

Sounds like a mandatory "software update" should be in the works.

But wasn't it Sony who said that updates weren't part of the digidistro plan for the PSN for PSPgo?

Hilarity ensues.

Wow. I downloaded it and deleted it after a few levels. I thought it was alright. Wondering when it was gonna stop, though. I guess that's why. Hah.

I think it's still on my PS3.

I can't expect Sony would ban users. That wouldn't be fair, and Sony isn't Microsoft. I also have a feeling the damage was limited, since this story wasn't picked up anywhere. Hopefully Tecmo wasn't hurt too much by it. It really is a great little title.

Microsft hasn't banned me and I had downloaded about 2 or 3 things for free in Xbox Lives earlier stages. 6AM, and some content was just labeled wrong.

I did think that it was kind of odd for a demo to be over 400 megs. Glad I got it. Guess I'll have to beat it before the update

I managed to accidentally grab this too! I was having my own troubles testing out MediaGo, and I actually nearly gave up before even downloading anything. I'm glad I grabbed it though, because that game is pretty damn badass.

Jim doesn't have an anti-Sony bias. He just calls it like he sees it, and that is bias in its purest form, just not necessarily aimed at any company, service or manufacturer in particular.

He wrote an entire diatribe about it. Actually, it was more of a thesis.
A stellar one at that.

You guys actually believe this is cool and a good thing?

This is unfortunate for Tecmo; especially if it's as good a game as Jim says it is. We need to support new and decent IPs with our cash so there will be more of it in the future.

Why couldn't this have happened to a game that will rake in money regardless? Like Halo or Modern Warfare, for example? Something that could easily make up the loss in revenue with like, themed Slurpee cups?

I hope ot a lot of people downloaded it. I feel like keeping a full game without having payed for is like stealing; not saying that anyone who downloaded it is a thief, but if I had it I would fel a little guilty.

Dylan Alford's Avatar - Comment posted on 10/04/2009 07:35

Depending on what it's priced at, I consider it worth my time and would gladly buy it. Tecmo won't sue, though they might as soon as it's figured out who did what.
