FOSTER CITY, Calif., Aug. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) today announced plans to introduce a new 160GB PLAYSTATION(R)3 (PS3(TM)) computer entertainment system in North America as part of the limited-edition Uncharted: Drake's Fortune(TM) PS3 system bundle. The increased storage size enables entertainment enthusiasts to store even more movies, television shows, and games downloaded from PLAYSTATION(R)Network, as well as more videos, music, and photos from their personal collection. Slated to launch in November for $499.99 (MSRP), the 160GB PS3 system will come bundled with the hit game, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune(TM), a PLAYSTATION Network voucher for PAIN, and a DUALSHOCK(R)3 wireless controller. The previously announced 80GB PS3 system ($399.99 MSRP) has started shipping to retailers.
"As PLAYSTATION Network continues to evolve with our recently launched video delivery service and more exclusive games, PS3 owners are demanding more storage capacity," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA. "Consumers also are utilizing PS3 as an entertainment hub for their digital media, placing content such as their entire music collection on the hard drive. The 160GB PS3 system addresses this growing consumer demand in a compelling bundle that delivers significant value."
The Uncharted: Drake's Fortune PS3 bundle includes the following components:

-- Uncharted: Drake's Fortune -- A 400-year-old clue found in the coffin of Sir Francis Drake sets a modern-day fortune hunter, Nathan Drake, on an exploration for the fabled treasure of El Dorado, leading to the discovery of a forgotten island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The search turns deadly when Drake becomes stranded on the island and hunted by mercenaries. Outnumbered and outgunned, Drake and his companions must fight to survive as they begin to unravel the terrible secrets hidden on the Island.
-- PAIN PLAYSTATION Network Voucher* -- PAIN boldly tackles a rarely explored area of video-gaming ... comedy. -- DUALSHOCK 3 Wireless Controller -- DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller provides the most intuitive game play experience with pressure sensors in each action button and the inclusion of the highly sensitive SIXAXIS(TM) motion sensing technology.
The additional storage space of the 160GB model will benefit consumers, as several highly anticipated PLAYSTATION Network and PS3 games along with add-on content will be available for download soon, including PAIN Amusement Park, Ratchet & Clank(R)Future: Quest for Booty(TM), SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation, and The Last Guy(TM). Who the hell is going to use 160 gb on their ps3? Is gmae installs going to be a big thing in the future or what? I thought 80 gig was pretty big as it was.
For those that say you won't be able to fill that up, well you just wait a few years when Digital Download takes up huge amounts of steam with Ratchet, Re-Releases, and Movies leading the way. I've personally already loaded over 50gigs worth of such things.
God bless you Colette, and your lo-fi ways......
As others have pointed out, this can be done by purchasing a standard laptop hard drive (500 gig is my preference - I laugh in the face of 160....).
Plus, it's really storage, not memory. More memory actually might not be a bad idea, considering how often the web browser craps out on me due to "insufficient memory", at which point I am helpfully informed that "a blank page will be displayed instead"....it's almost amusing how many of Sony's "official" game sites are unreadable from a PS3, yet they aren't exactly rushing to update the flash player, for example.....douches.
pvr will eat your hard drive
As for Uncharted, WHERE IS THE SEQUEL THEY'VE MENTIONED?
Seriously, one of the best action/Adventure titles I've ever had the pleasure of playing, so good in fact that I feel it single-handedly validated my purchase of the PS3.
When your system has been out for less than 2 years and there is a long ass Wiki article about the SKU's timeline, I think its bad news.

Hells no!
$120 and 10 minutes of my time to go from a 60gig to a 150 gig!
they need smaller chips/less power consumption & full BC (preferably w/ upscaling). So either that software solution they've been working on comes out or they admit they were wrong & put the EE back in.
Some people have a PS2 but don't want to buy an eighth one that might just DRE out of the box like the last one I bought.
I never owned one (yeah, I was the only one), and it would be a really big selling point for me. That's an instant backlog of games right there.
Also, it was one of the main bulletpoints when the PS3 was announced, it's pretty ridiculous for Sony to have taken it out. If Kutaragi was still in charge, I'm sure it wouldn't even be an issue.
It is just far to repetative and boring IMHO and every enemy looks the same.
I still do not understand why it got such a high gameranking.

..On Backwards Compatibility
[The PS3 will have] almost perfect backwards compatibility. There will be some exceptions, but we believe those will be even less than we saw from PSOne to PS2.
"Backwards compatibility, as you know from PlayStation One and PlayStation 2, is a core value of what we believe we should offer. And access to the library of content people have created, bought for themselves, and accumulated over the years is necessary to create a format. PlayStation is a format meaning that it transcends many devices -- PSOne, PS2, and now PS3."
"If the developer wrote the game according to our technical requirements checklist, we will have what we believe will be almost perfect backwards compatibility. There will be some exceptions, there always are, but we believe those will be very few and far between. Even less so than we saw from PSOne to PS2."
...On Microsoft BC
"I don't believe that was backwards compatibility."
Phil Harrison doesnt work for Sony anymore, he left because of the whole PS3 launch debacle. Which is where that quote was from. Sort of an ironic quote considering the direction they went after just their first SKU. It's about 99.999% probable the 160GB will not have full BC.
