If you own a PS3 and haven't picked up a copy of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune yet, shame on you: it's one of the best games to come out for the system yet. If your excuse is that you don't own a PS3, you won't be able to use that one for long either, seeing as Sony has just announced an excellent new bundle that includes the game.

For $499.99, you'll score the new 160GB PS3, a copy of Uncharted, a PSN voucher for Pain, and the Dualshock wireless controller. Of course, you could always grab the previously announced 80GB, but you wouldn't get all the cool extras.

As much as I love Uncharted, the real item of note here is that big daddy PS3. If games like Siren: Blood Curse are any indication of where the future of downloadable content is headed, we'll need every ounce of space we can get to not have to delete and redownload at every turn. Would you consider replacing your current PS3 with this model just for the sake of having more storage?

Sony Computer Entertainment America Announces Limited-Edition Uncharted: Drake's Fortune(TM) PLAYSTATION(R)3 Bundle Featuring New 160GB PS3(TM) System

PS3 Bundle Includes Uncharted: Drake's Fortune(TM), PLAYSTATION(R)Network Voucher for PAIN and DUALSHOCK(R)3 Wireless Controller, Offering Tremendous Value to Consumers

FOSTER CITY, Calif., Aug. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) today announced plans to introduce a new 160GB PLAYSTATION(R)3 (PS3(TM)) computer entertainment system in North America as part of the limited-edition Uncharted: Drake's Fortune(TM) PS3 system bundle. The increased storage size enables entertainment enthusiasts to store even more movies, television shows, and games downloaded from PLAYSTATION(R)Network, as well as more videos, music, and photos from their personal collection. Slated to launch in November for $499.99 (MSRP), the 160GB PS3 system will come bundled with the hit game, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune(TM), a PLAYSTATION Network voucher for PAIN, and a DUALSHOCK(R)3 wireless controller. The previously announced 80GB PS3 system ($399.99 MSRP) has started shipping to retailers.

"As PLAYSTATION Network continues to evolve with our recently launched video delivery service and more exclusive games, PS3 owners are demanding more storage capacity," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA. "Consumers also are utilizing PS3 as an entertainment hub for their digital media, placing content such as their entire music collection on the hard drive. The 160GB PS3 system addresses this growing consumer demand in a compelling bundle that delivers significant value."

The Uncharted: Drake's Fortune PS3 bundle includes the following components:

--  160GB PS3 system -- The 160GB PS3 is a complete entertainment system comprising a Blu-ray(TM) Disc player, HDMI output, an integrated Wi-Fi connection, and Cell Broadband Engine(TM).

--  Uncharted: Drake's Fortune -- A 400-year-old clue found in the coffin of Sir Francis Drake sets a modern-day fortune hunter, Nathan Drake, on an exploration for the fabled treasure of El Dorado, leading to the discovery of a forgotten island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The search turns deadly when Drake becomes stranded on the island and hunted by mercenaries. Outnumbered and outgunned, Drake and his companions must fight to survive as they begin to unravel the terrible secrets hidden on the Island.

--  PAIN PLAYSTATION Network Voucher* -- PAIN boldly tackles a rarely explored area of video-gaming ... comedy. The unique mechanic of the game allows the player to load a character into a human-sized, ultra-powerful slingshot, and fire the character into an active, physics-controlled environment, filled with precarious and humorous situations. Download PAIN from PLAYSTATION Store (http://store.playstation.com) to your PS3 system with the included voucher.

--  DUALSHOCK 3 Wireless Controller -- DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller provides the most intuitive game play experience with pressure sensors in each action button and the inclusion of the highly sensitive SIXAXIS(TM) motion sensing technology.

The additional storage space of the 160GB model will benefit consumers, as several highly anticipated PLAYSTATION Network and PS3 games along with add-on content will be available for download soon, including PAIN Amusement Park, Ratchet & Clank(R)Future: Quest for Booty(TM), SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation, and The Last Guy(TM). The bundle is also a great option for consumers who want to utilize PLAYSTATION Network's video delivery service, which offers new blockbuster movies and popular TV shows for download on an ongoing basis.

PS3 momentum has soared in 2008, starting with Blu-ray becoming the

high-definition standard and following the launches of key franchise titles, including Gran Turismo(TM) 5 Prologue, Grand Theft Auto(TM) IV, and Metal Gear Solid(R)4: Guns of the Patriots. That momentum will continue into the holidays and beyond, as PS3's software lineup will offer the most depth and breadth of any platform across the industry, delivering highly anticipated exclusives such as BUZZ!(TM): Quiz TV, LittleBigPlanet(TM), Resistance(TM) 2, MotorStorm(TM) Pacific Rift, and Killzone(TM) 2.

It's official; the PS3 has more SKU's than the frozen food section in Walmart.

Yeah, it'd be a waste of money to buy a new PS3 just for extra storage. Just get a new HDD.

I like how PS3 is leading the way in storage capacity right out of the box. Yet, if people knew any better they'd just put their own Hard Drive in like DuncanIsaac mentioned. It is SO easy with little effort, which is why I put a Terabyte in mine.

For those that say you won't be able to fill that up, well you just wait a few years when Digital Download takes up huge amounts of steam with Ratchet, Re-Releases, and Movies leading the way. I've personally already loaded over 50gigs worth of such things.

It's great for new PS3 buyers to get the added storage right out of the box, but current owners should already be aware that they can upgrade the HDD on their own. It's right in the owners manual how to do it.

Would I consider replacing my current PS3 with this model just for the sake of having more memory?

God bless you Colette, and your lo-fi ways......

As others have pointed out, this can be done by purchasing a standard laptop hard drive (500 gig is my preference - I laugh in the face of 160....).

Plus, it's really storage, not memory. More memory actually might not be a bad idea, considering how often the web browser craps out on me due to "insufficient memory", at which point I am helpfully informed that "a blank page will be displayed instead"....it's almost amusing how many of Sony's "official" game sites are unreadable from a PS3, yet they aren't exactly rushing to update the flash player, for example.....douches.

I can't understand buying a new PS3 console just for a bigger hard drive. Why not buy one of the old PS3s with real PS2 backwards compatibility and grab a new hard drive on the cheap from newegg. I wish I hadn't gotten rid of my launch PS3 -- none of the new ones appeal to me w/o BC.

Seems like somewhat of a rip off, but then again a lot of people can't be bothered to swap their own hard drive in and out. While I'm sure it's not too difficult, some people just don't understand electronics whatsoever.

As for Uncharted, WHERE IS THE SEQUEL THEY'VE MENTIONED?

Seriously, one of the best action/Adventure titles I've ever had the pleasure of playing, so good in fact that I feel it single-handedly validated my purchase of the PS3.

I think Sony has really hurt themselves with all these different SKU's and announcement of new ones. it confuses the consumer. It creates a sense on inferiority in the cheaper SKU's. (I actually saw a 20GB PS3 on the store shelf crying) Maybe people will hold off buying one, thinking the SKU announced before christmas will be even better.

When your system has been out for less than 2 years and there is a long ass Wiki article about the SKU's timeline, I think its bad news.

I don't care about the HDD space at all. it could have 1MB and it wouldn't matter. that's easily fixable.

they need smaller chips/less power consumption & full BC (preferably w/ upscaling). So either that software solution they've been working on comes out or they admit they were wrong & put the EE back in.

Some people have a PS2 but don't want to buy an eighth one that might just DRE out of the box like the last one I bought.

Spooky Electric's Avatar

Also, BC is an issue for me because my PS2 is a launch PS2. I've probably played it more than any other console I've owned, and I've been gaming since I could hold a controller in my hand. It's just BARELY giving me disc read issues. They're not major, but it obviously won't last forever, and rather than buy a PS2 slim and use up another TV input, I'd rather just have a PS3 that plays my PS3, PS2 and PS1 games all on the same console and save space.

Also, it was one of the main bulletpoints when the PS3 was announced, it's pretty ridiculous for Sony to have taken it out. If Kutaragi was still in charge, I'm sure it wouldn't even be an issue.

@Spooky Electric

Phil Harrison

..On Backwards Compatibility

[The PS3 will have] almost perfect backwards compatibility. There will be some exceptions, but we believe those will be even less than we saw from PSOne to PS2.

"Backwards compatibility, as you know from PlayStation One and PlayStation 2, is a core value of what we believe we should offer. And access to the library of content people have created, bought for themselves, and accumulated over the years is necessary to create a format. PlayStation is a format meaning that it transcends many devices -- PSOne, PS2, and now PS3."

"If the developer wrote the game according to our technical requirements checklist, we will have what we believe will be almost perfect backwards compatibility. There will be some exceptions, there always are, but we believe those will be very few and far between. Even less so than we saw from PSOne to PS2."

...On Microsoft BC

"I don't believe that was backwards compatibility."

Phil Harrison doesnt work for Sony anymore, he left because of the whole PS3 launch debacle. Which is where that quote was from. Sort of an ironic quote considering the direction they went after just their first SKU. It's about 99.999% probable the 160GB will not have full BC.
