One major rule of PS3 exclusive games is that developers will lie about them and claim they couldn't work on the Xbox 360, even though they blatantly could with a bit of development skill. Cue Naughty Dog president Christophe Balestra, who is claiming that Uncharted 2 couldn't appear on the Xbox 360 even if Sony wasn't publishing it, because Microsoft's console couldn't handle all the science.
"I guarantee that this game couldn't be working on XBox 360. It would be impossible. I'm 100 percent sure of this," claims Balestra. "First of all, we fill the Blu-ray 100%, we have no room left on this one. We have 25GB of data; we're using every single bit of it.
"The fact that every PS3 has a hard drive is huge for us. It's the combination of Blu-ray and hard drive. You can play the entire game without loading. We don't require an install. We're doing all the post-processing effects on the SPUs [Synergistic Processing Units]. The quality of the depth of field we have, you can't do that on the Xbox."
I love it when PS3 developers make up stuff like this. Just because Naughty Dog is bloating the size of the game and not compressing anything, that doesn't mean it couldn't fit on a DVD. I'm yet to see a console exclusive that either console couldn't handle. I'd say that a developer claiming it "can't" be done says more about the proficiency of the studio than the power of the machine.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
But I don't know shit about programming, so who knows?
he is speaking in code obviously
But that's not unbelievable, the cell and blu-ray were invented TO surpass dvd and other processors, so wouldn't it make sense that they can create games that the older tech can't when used properly?
He didn't really say anything that unrealistic here, infact he was pretty down to earth about it.
You sir are 50% Right...
As of Right NOW!
@ EternalDeathSlayer
Agree 100% with YOUR theory.
At the same time though, I don't think compressing files is a good idea if you can avoid it. I can't even listen to mp3's without getting angry. Seriously, you lose entire instruments in compressed classical music. It's pathetic that people don't think that compression is a big deal.
The Cell and Blu-ray are indeed far better than dvd and 360 processor but these 2 things do not a console make. If the first Uncharted, a fantastic looking game by any standards, was only using 30% then the second one must be nothing short of breathtaking and, although gorgeous looking, the screenshots indicate otherwise. They're just hyping up the game as is traditional with exclusives.
Agreed, now send this off to Gabe & Valve. :)
But I might be wrong; they might have really stuffed that Blu-Ray to the max without using cutscenes. But to be honest, that's my theory.
Also, WTF JIM OMG WAT IZ WIT UR PS3 BIAZ GAWD
That, and we haven't got the full game yet so who knows what's on it :P
Of course if they down rezed specific things, changed the way they do compression, put it on a few discs, then yeah, it's going to work on the 360. But why shouldn't a developer being talking up their game? I don't understand why this is so threatening?
But it is possible for the game to be compressed and still look pretty damn nice. This is all Sony e-peen stroking horse shit imo.
Halo ODST flexes the 360's graphics muscle.
That's a comment you left above, which is obviously false and borderline retarded.
Both systems pack quite the punch, although if I had to give the edge to one or another I would certainly say the PS3 is more powerful. But that doesn't mean the 360 isn't capable of pumping out gorgeous visuals.
Congratulations, you just killed a penguin. This penguin –

But I love Naughty Dog, I love them so much I would get a womb surgically implanted into me just so I could carry their pug-faced children.
So if they say it can't be done of 360.. THEN BY GOD IT CAN'T BE DONE ON 360!!
Soooo, as usual, Shut up Jim.
its going to be a great PS3 exclusive nonetheless. saying otherwise is just fanboy talk. also, those saying it looked 'ok', have you seen uncharted 1 in full HD? its pretty amazing looking for an early PS3 game.
Uncharted 2 in it's current form wouldn't run on 360.
They didn't say that it wouldn't run if changed or compressed somehow.
Once again Jim Sterling fails to understand what the devs/publishers mean. Same thing happened with the Sony 'expanded audience' quote yesterday.
@wander; I'm impressed! I didn't think you could fit a whole PS3 inside a 360 case.
Kinda have to disagree with you on that. The format and processor are the cornerstone of the console, kinda like the skeleton,brain,and heart are the cornerstone of the human body, these are the factors the console is built around and pretty much dictate what the console will ultimately be(or could be).they may not be all the important pieces,but they are the most important pieces.
@elsa
That's true without a doubt, but in my eyes a port (well ones that is worth while) should reatin most features.
Yes we could remove everything on that list, put it on ten disks and port it to whatever system but if they did I don't think you can call that butchering uncharted 2(at least not with a straight face) I guess what I'm saying is you could do all that, but the end result would be such a horrifyingly disfigured mess that you shouldn't even bother.
Plus I doubt they used 100% of the space on that disc. But whatever.
The truth is the PS3 and 360 are very close in terms of power, much closer than any systems from previous console generations. I remember the good old days when you could actually see a real difference between two consoles like you could with the Mega Drive and SNES.
Naughty Dog has delivered nothing but quality (discounting the 3D0) game throughout it's entire career.
Crash 1, 2, 3 and Team Racing
Jak and Daxter, Jak 2, 3 and X
Uncharted, and undoubtedly Uncharted 2.
Yet he has the audacity to write rubbish like 'even though they blatantly could with a bit of development skil' and ''d say that a developer claiming it "can't" be done says more about the proficiency of the studio'.
This is a new low for you Jim-bob.
That's not a bad thing really as it means that they can just focus on one version and do that version well but if they're making up excuses for it like this rather than just saying "We like the PS3 more. We think we can provide a higher quality for it. We don't have any interest in the 360." then yeah they deserve to be called up on it.
@Reveille
Am I the only other person who read the same article as you?
more to the point, why do naughty dog feel the need to come out and say something like this? do they not have enough promotional material to advertise uncharted 2 anymore?
