Uncharted 2 wouldn't work on Xbox 360 ... apparently photo

One major rule of PS3 exclusive games is that developers will lie about them and claim they couldn't work on the Xbox 360, even though they blatantly could with a bit of development skill. Cue Naughty Dog president Christophe Balestra, who is claiming that Uncharted 2 couldn't appear on the Xbox 360 even if Sony wasn't publishing it, because Microsoft's console couldn't handle all the science.

"I guarantee that this game couldn't be working on XBox 360. It would be impossible. I'm 100 percent sure of this," claims Balestra. "First of all, we fill the Blu-ray 100%, we have no room left on this one. We have 25GB of data; we're using every single bit of it.

"The fact that every PS3 has a hard drive is huge for us. It's the combination of Blu-ray and hard drive. You can play the entire game without loading. We don't require an install. We're doing all the post-processing effects on the SPUs [Synergistic Processing Units]. The quality of the depth of field we have, you can't do that on the Xbox."

I love it when PS3 developers make up stuff like this. Just because Naughty Dog is bloating the size of the game and not compressing anything, that doesn't mean it couldn't fit on a DVD. I'm yet to see a console exclusive that either console couldn't handle. I'd say that a developer claiming it "can't" be done says more about the proficiency of the studio than the power of the machine.

I like how they claim that the original Uncharted only used 30% of the PS3's power, but Uncharted 2 will use 100%. Call me crazy, but if Uncharted 1 only used 30%, shouldn't the new one be damn near photorealistic?

Wow Jim, you're shitting on Naughty Dog now? Questioning the "proficiency of the studio?" Wow...I mean, I agree, you should take any first party comments with a grain of salt, but to indirectly imply that ND is somehow an inept studo proves you still have that Sony chip on your shoulder.

Oh god, 1 sh!tstorm coming right up.

But that's not unbelievable, the cell and blu-ray were invented TO surpass dvd and other processors, so wouldn't it make sense that they can create games that the older tech can't when used properly?

He didn't really say anything that unrealistic here, infact he was pretty down to earth about it.

I sort of agree with the sentiment that they're exagerating or whatever.

At the same time though, I don't think compressing files is a good idea if you can avoid it. I can't even listen to mp3's without getting angry. Seriously, you lose entire instruments in compressed classical music. It's pathetic that people don't think that compression is a big deal.

I'm not seeing any of these blue rays everyone's talking about. I've seen a few yellow-ish sunbeam kinda rays in screenshots and stuff but calling them blue is a stretch. Unless you're talking about ribald stingray comedians. Those are overexposed if anything.

@Black Nexus

The Cell and Blu-ray are indeed far better than dvd and 360 processor but these 2 things do not a console make. If the first Uncharted, a fantastic looking game by any standards, was only using 30% then the second one must be nothing short of breathtaking and, although gorgeous looking, the screenshots indicate otherwise. They're just hyping up the game as is traditional with exclusives.

From what I understand, the reason lots of PS3 games could "only" work on blu-ray is because of the HD cutscenes (not in-engine ones). Resistance is an example of this. Because of the HD cutscenes, space fills up fast, and you need more discs (see Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, etc.)
But I might be wrong; they might have really stuffed that Blu-Ray to the max without using cutscenes. But to be honest, that's my theory.

I wouldn't really call it industry bullshit, he has certainly explained himself in terms of what is being used on the PS3, and because of these missing features it would be hard to port to the Xbox 360 and even then they could port it, the quality would take a serious hit from the PS3 version and you have to question whether the developer is prepared to do it in terms of their overall direction and size of the team.

That, and we haven't got the full game yet so who knows what's on it :P

Jim,I didn't know you were a programmer? It's one thing to have an opinion, but you're not a professional in this field, and your opinion is void. The ps3 is a more powerful system, why is this so ridiculous of an idea? Not everything is about disc space, I doubt you could put this game on 4 dvd's and expect it to run the way they created it.

Of course if they down rezed specific things, changed the way they do compression, put it on a few discs, then yeah, it's going to work on the 360. But why shouldn't a developer being talking up their game? I don't understand why this is so threatening?

Any game can be ported... it might be a crappy port, it might exclude aspects of the game, it might end up with sub-par graphics, it might take 10 DVD's to play it... but any game can be ported.

In it's form it wouldn't work, this is true.

But it is possible for the game to be compressed and still look pretty damn nice. This is all Sony e-peen stroking horse shit imo.

@ The Reborn: Ya know, nobody minds your preference for the PS3, but we do mind your ignorant fanboy commentary on every "console war" related article.

Halo ODST flexes the 360's graphics muscle.

That's a comment you left above, which is obviously false and borderline retarded.

Both systems pack quite the punch, although if I had to give the edge to one or another I would certainly say the PS3 is more powerful. But that doesn't mean the 360 isn't capable of pumping out gorgeous visuals.

If gears of War 2 is able to do allot of the stuff that I normally couldn't believe it could be done, then Uncharted 2 should be able to be ported to it if they wanted to. Honestly if the programmers really wanted to do a port they could, I totally agree with Jim on that spot.

Naughty Dog is right.

Uncharted 2 in it's current form wouldn't run on 360.

They didn't say that it wouldn't run if changed or compressed somehow.

Once again Jim Sterling fails to understand what the devs/publishers mean. Same thing happened with the Sony 'expanded audience' quote yesterday.

Kinda have to disagree with you on that. The format and processor are the cornerstone of the console, kinda like the skeleton,brain,and heart are the cornerstone of the human body, these are the factors the console is built around and pretty much dictate what the console will ultimately be(or could be).they may not be all the important pieces,but they are the most important pieces.

@elsa
That's true without a doubt, but in my eyes a port (well ones that is worth while) should reatin most features.

Yes we could remove everything on that list, put it on ten disks and port it to whatever system but if they did I don't think you can call that butchering uncharted 2(at least not with a straight face) I guess what I'm saying is you could do all that, but the end result would be such a horrifyingly disfigured mess that you shouldn't even bother.

My guess is Christophe's comment is more hyperbole than anything by saying it won't work on the 360. The truth is that it probably would, but the space you get on the Blu-ray provides the headroom to give the title the polish people will expect from it. It would be like compressing a vinyl record into a 128kps mp3 for Myspace.

Plus I doubt they used 100% of the space on that disc. But whatever.

Of course the 360 could do Uncharted 2, sure there would probably be graphical differences and it might take a couple of DVD's but so what? Everyone knows the Gamecube was more powerful than the PS2 and they still managed to port Resident Evil 4.

The truth is the PS3 and 360 are very close in terms of power, much closer than any systems from previous console generations. I remember the good old days when you could actually see a real difference between two consoles like you could with the Mega Drive and SNES.

Wow... reading Jim's full post makes me gag.

Naughty Dog has delivered nothing but quality (discounting the 3D0) game throughout it's entire career.

Crash 1, 2, 3 and Team Racing

Jak and Daxter, Jak 2, 3 and X

Uncharted, and undoubtedly Uncharted 2.

Yet he has the audacity to write rubbish like 'even though they blatantly could with a bit of development skil' and ''d say that a developer claiming it "can't" be done says more about the proficiency of the studio'.

This is a new low for you Jim-bob.

Why are people assuming saying that they're talking BS means that we're automatically saying that the game and the developers suck? I think the point at the end wasn't saying that they were bad developers but that if they're good enough to make games like Uncharted then they're good enough to make games for the 360 but they don't want to.

That's not a bad thing really as it means that they can just focus on one version and do that version well but if they're making up excuses for it like this rather than just saying "We like the PS3 more. We think we can provide a higher quality for it. We don't have any interest in the 360." then yeah they deserve to be called up on it.

@Reveille
