Uncharted 2 designer concedes story lags in final act photo

During "Among Friends," Richard Lemarchand's Uncharted 2 postmortem at GDC 10, the co-lead designer admitted that the macro-design of the story and gameplay beats early on in production resulted in a mechanically exciting, but narratively lacking final act in the mythic city of Shambhala.

"There aren't really enough strong story beats there to match the length and the intensity of the gameplay," Lemarchand said. "At the end of the day, we'd committed too much to the level in terms of its final art and we couldn't really bring about a perfect fit [between the story and the action]."

Maybe it was just the zombie Sasquatches and the final boss fight, but I'd tend to agree that Uncharted 2's final act was the weakest part of the story. Either way, it's always groovy to hear a designer with the honesty to criticize his own game.

UPDATE: SCEA's PR department contacted us and requested that we clarify Lemarchand's statement. Lemarchand did not specifically say that Uncharted 2's story "lags" in the final act, but that, in PR manager Jill Webber's words, "that he felt the Monastery level was where they didn't have quite enough story beats."

Still an amazing game, but this is one of the few flaws.

The perfection they demanded and achieved was still the best experience I ever had in a game.

I hated that damn train level. That was the weak point if you ask me. Died like 30 times cause he kept flinging himself off the side while I was hanging, or that damn midway boss would shoot me from behind.
Final boss was weird though, seems too much like "Evil for the sake of Evil".

Like Super Drybones, I had a hard time with the train level as well, mostly because I couldn't get Drake to move where I wanted him to without falling off the fucking thing or getting hit by one of those light posts.

The story did lack a bit in the end, and the boss fight was pretty boring, but, like DonHonk said, 'twas but a minor scuff on an otherwise flawless paintjob.

Amy Hennig has serious issues with finales - of all the games she's lead I think only Defiance had a decent ending/finale the rest were either cut short or frustrating.

Learning from your mistakes/shortcomings is a very good thing. That means you'll do even better next time.

Unless that designer is Peter Molyneux, in which case it's simply an expected part of the "shit on my last game before promising disc-based blowjobs to the player in my next game" circle of life.

Well, i found Lazarevich to be a more likable character than the plain Navarro and Roman from the first Uncharted, although he was sometimes a stereotypical villain, with the speeches and all, but he surely had more strength in the narrative, in my opinion.

If anything, i noticed a severe lack of Sullivan, i demand more of him.

It might be the weakest act in the game but it's still fucking amazing. The pacing of the story and action in Uncharted 2 is unmatched in video game history. Considering how Naughty Dog managed to fix just about everything wrong with the first game (even things I didn't think needed fixing until they fixed them) we should be in for a hell of a ride with Uncharted 3.

The final act was a bit weak story wise, yeah, but I was fine with it. Definitely a huge improvement over the end of the first game, and it helped that Shambhala was absolutely beautiful, especially after so much time in the snow.

Agreed. 3rd act was kinda meh but between the beauty of Shambhala and the brilliant story and gameplay up until that point I was ok with it.

Yeah the ending was a little bit lackluster but there were so many OMFG moments in that game that it was pretty easy to let go.

"If Uncharted 2 had been made by an indie company, it would have been so much better"

I seriously do not understand why people find Uncharted 2's single player so much better than Uncharted's. The 2nd game basically took 1's story, copied it, switched a few characters around, added some ridiculously over-the-top baddies (armored guy with shotgun taking multiple clips, or the super armored guy with minigun taking hundreds of bullets...). To me Uncharted 2's only saving grace was the multiplayer, but I agree the ending was pretty weak.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the fact that Drake had alot more on the line at the end of Uncharted (Elena's life was at stake) whereas while we visited the lost city it was more of a "stop the bad guy from ruling the world and twirling his mustache ALA Snidley Whiplash".

I dunno though, the rest of the games pacing makes up for it winding down near the end. I don't think it necessarily hurts an already amazing game.

I literally just finished my first playthrough of Uncharted 2 yesterday, and I have to say it is by far one of the most overrated and overhyped games of all-time. Was it a good game? Yes, definitely. Was it the best PS3 game? Not close...hell, it wasn't even the best game of the last HALF of 2009, let alone the entire year.

Yeah, I loved the game till I got to the last part. Is it bad that I played through the game twice last november when I bought it, but now I cant recall how it ended. How's that for a memorable final scene?

i felt that the only flaw with shambala was the lack of exploration that we had with the other places in the game.

it wasn't bad, the narrative just shoved the player along by the time it got to the mystical city. super yetis.//

Eh, I liked the final boss in part 2 better than part one. You don't get too many modern games where you get a real final boss, usually just more enemies at once.

But in general, the first half of the game is better than the second. Not so much an insult to the second half, just a compliment to the first.

Amazing game. I finished it in a single, eleven-hour sitting. On Christmas day. Don't know what that says about me, but yeah... the later stages weren't as strong as the rest of it from a gameplay/story perspective, but it's really a minor complaint...

Uncharted 3 will be truly mind-blowing.
