That being said, I don't really care much for figures and statues. But the dragon does look cool.
If an online pass is not worth $10, is it fair to say that a dragon statue is worth $50?
Apples and oranges, but still worth thinking about maybe.
I think the best Collector's Edition goodies are soundtrack CD and stuff to put stuff in (like the lockbox and duffel bag for GTA4 CE, which I have, or the Pandora's Box from the GoWIII CE which I also have).
All depends on the person. I bought the Legendary Halo 3 edition and while I still have the helmet, the novelty did wear off for me. My friend however is a huge Halo fan (games, comics, novels, animation, etc.) and has gotten both the Halo 3 and Halo: Reach Legendary editions. He said it was worth it for the statue/helmet alone, for if they were sold separately they would be worth much more.
So it all comes to the person really. I haven't bought a special edition since Halo 3, but I can see why some people might want to.
But, every single so-called collectors edition I have seen the past few years have showned up on store shelves for a third or less of the initial retail prices. I got the Halo Reach Collectors Edition for my son last Spring at Gamestop for $50. I'm a big Gears of War fan, but my Wife is an even bigger one and wanted it's CE. I convinced to wait, and we will pick it up this Spring for $50. Which I all but guarantee will happen. I'd like to get this Skyrim CE, but I can wait till it's sitting on the dusty floor of a Gamestop or BestBuy on sale for $50-$60.
Must have it now? Can wait to have it? Don't want it at all? Personal preference my friends.

In their own ways, online play and dragon statues are both extras. Not all games have them. The difference is, home console players are used to getting their online play for free, and have come to take it for granted, where dragon statues are still considered "special".
I wonder if there would suddenly be an outrage if all games had come with free dragon statues for the past five years, and suddenly game developers suddenly started charging extra for the "dragon statue included" version.
Or what if developers started charging an extra $5 for games that include full color instruction booklets, and regular price for games that just have a crappy, black and white slipsheet? Would their be trouble then?
Furthermore, there is no objective answer to "is this optional CE stuff worth $xx", because it is completely dependent upon how much each person enjoys things like that.
As for requiring more than what's on the disc, that's also borderline irrelevant. LAN play doesn't require anything but the hardware consumers have at home, and truly online play nowadays is usually handled in a P2P fashion, with the publisher/developer only hosting a low-end matchmaking service that could run on a fucking Pentium 4. Please tell me you're not falling for that "we need to start charging extra for upkeep" horse shit.
With all the other stuff coming out around the same time I wanted I unfortunately had to pass on preordering. Hopefully this is one of those CEs that winds up heavily discounted after launch.
The collectors stuff like the dragon aren't game content. If I don't buy it, I miss out on nothing related to the game.
Online passes lock away game content that is on the disc which you've already paid for.
Some bonus game content is just that - an optional bonus. The developers later make it available from a downloadable service. But other content, like online multiplayer or Arkham City's Catwoman levels are on the disc and require used customers to pay extra to regain access to it. It doesn't matter how trivial this stuff is - it's gameplay that is advertised on the box and exists on the disc. The money I give to the man behind the counter should grant me access to all of it, whether I ever use it or not.
C'mon... This is an alternate expensive edition for super fans. Nobody is being nicked or dimed against their will. Food for trolls, not food for thought, and you know it.
Personally I think a big dragon statue is about as bad as a sexy anime girl statue, and was disappointed when this CE was announced. I might try to ebay the art book off some fool though.
I was going to say the same thing. You look pretty unhealthy, Jim. you don't want to die prematurely, do you? ;)
multiplayer IS optional, plenty of amazing and COMPLETE games don't have multiplayer.
I would think someone with a vault boy would know better
If he reviews the game, then expect him to give it at least a 9.5
my 4 year old would like his sunglasses back...upon receipt, he'll hand back your dignity.
[you reckon jim ever takes that sports-coat to the dry-cleaners or perhaps he has more than one in that undersized closet of his...either way those shoulder pads are losing their luster. Can you replace those or is it just worth getting a new faded black coat at the starvation army?]
