The extra crap that comes with the game does look kind of neat, but is it worth $100 for a statue of a dragon and an art book, or are gamers being nickle and dimed?

This isn't skylanders... a dragon statue and an artbook aren't game content. It is not possible to compare collectors edition memorabilia with game content locked away by an online pass.
@Holmes: A lot of games nowadays do come out with a lot of Special/Limited/Collector's Edition. Now it's no longer "special".
I think the best Collector's Edition goodies are soundtrack CD and stuff to put stuff in (like the lockbox and duffel bag for GTA4 CE, which I have, or the Pandora's Box from the GoWIII CE which I also have).

All depends on the person. I bought the Legendary Halo 3 edition and while I still have the helmet, the novelty did wear off for me. My friend however is a huge Halo fan (games, comics, novels, animation, etc.) and has gotten both the Halo 3 and Halo: Reach Legendary editions. He said it was worth it for the statue/helmet alone, for if they were sold separately they would be worth much more.
So it all comes to the person really. I haven't bought a special edition since Halo 3, but I can see why some people might want to.

A plastic dragon and art book isn't worth $90. Well to me anyway. Then again I paid $65 for a RID Scourge (Nemesis Prime) with a trailer and people said I was nuts for it. Fans will eat it up, though.
@Johnathan, The difference between this and online passes, is that the extra $90 is completely optional. If you don't want to pay for it, than you loose absolutely no in game content. And that is a huge difference.
I want the art book and the dvd commentary but fuck paying an extra 75 bucks for a chunk of recycled PVC. I guess I will manage with just playing the game and enjoying the map then.
The question of "worth" is, and always will be 100% subjective. It's a matter of personal choice. Everyone knows what they are getting so I wouldn't refer to it as "nickel&dime". You either want it or you do not.
But, every single so-called collectors edition I have seen the past few years have showned up on store shelves for a third or less of the initial retail prices. I got the Halo Reach Collectors Edition for my son last Spring at Gamestop for $50. I'm a big Gears of War fan, but my Wife is an even bigger one and wanted it's CE. I convinced to wait, and we will pick it up this Spring for $50. Which I all but guarantee will happen. I'd like to get this Skyrim CE, but I can wait till it's sitting on the dusty floor of a Gamestop or BestBuy on sale for $50-$60.
Must have it now? Can wait to have it? Don't want it at all? Personal preference my friends.

@Holmes - How is paying extra for OPTIONAL items in any way the same as being forced to pay for an online pass to access all the functionality on the damn disc?
Furthermore, there is no objective answer to "is this optional CE stuff worth $xx", because it is completely dependent upon how much each person enjoys things like that.

I really wanted to get the collector edition for this game but decided not to. And Jim i hate you since you get to play Skyrim and i have to wait another 14 days for it!
@Holmes - Multiplayer is not an "extra" service. It's been defined as a part of a whole package since PC games have been online-capable back in the early 90's (or further.) That particular question is thus irrelevant, because it's the publishers' own fault for wanting to change how things work 20 years later.

LAN play doesn't require anything but the hardware consumers have at home, and truly online play nowadays is usually handled in a P2P fashion, with the publisher/developer only hosting a low-end matchmaking service that could run on a fucking Pentium 4. With all the other stuff coming out around the same time I wanted I unfortunately had to pass on preordering. Hopefully this is one of those CEs that winds up heavily discounted after launch.

I love you and all Holmes, but I really don't understand the comparison you're trying to make. The CE stuff is just a neat little extra for fans where the online pass is an actual limiting of content.

Personally I think a big dragon statue is about as bad as a sexy anime girl statue, and was disappointed when this CE was announced. I might try to ebay the art book off some fool though.

@Holmes - Why do you need to bring up something dirty like an online pass at a beautiful, sacred time like this. Personally I don't give a fuck about the dragon statue but the concept art book looks like it's worth around 50 on its own.
Skyrim is sure to be right up Jim's alley because it requires neither skill nor intelligence to play, which means he's found another game besides Kirby that he is good at.

The books seems cool, but although the statue mold is well done, it sounds like it is made of some kind of lightweight plastic, which is essentially trash. Should have been $79 or $89.
Only idiots purchase Collector's Editions of games that will never be valuable to video game collectors. Skyrim will never be valuable because it has nothing to offer except for short-lived novelty.

[you reckon jim ever takes that sports-coat to the dry-cleaners or perhaps he has more than one in that undersized closet of his...either way those shoulder pads are losing their luster. Can you replace those or is it just worth getting a new faded black coat at the starvation army?]
