Self-aware comic book hero Rick Ajax tells it like it is in a brand new trailer for Unbound Saga. Here, the miserable tough guy laments his life as a slave to the whims of his creator, telling us about the robot zombies, apron-wearing bears and rodeo clowns that make up his unique rogue's gallery.

As with everything I've seen from Vogster's PSP beat 'em up, this trailer is looking good and has gotten me suitably pumped for Rick Ajax's videogame debut. As a fan of self-aware humor and old school brawlers, this one hits all the right notes for me. Hit the jump to see what I'm talking about.

It's just a shame that, with a name like Unbound Saga, people will be expecting yet another lazy Japanese RPG.

That art looks like he's EXTREMELY proud to be binding that woman's arms behind her back with a chain.

No offense. But this game looks dumb.

This game should instead just become an HD remake of Comix Zone that adds checkpoints and gets rid of the whole "you take damage when you punch stuff" thing.

Clayton, your perception of that image is an enlightening view into your psyche to say the least. May be time to get yourself checked out, y'know before you have a breakdown in 10 years. ;)

Seriously...he's not binding her arms. He's just getting ready to dispense some justice with that chain. Why she's there I don't know? Eye candy? But if her arms were tied behind her back you wouldn't see them in the position that they are now. Unless the artist is absolutely terrible, but I doubt it, because it's very decent.

This game looks like Haze:

1) (while carrying the game home before reading reviews) wow this game got huge hype I hope it's decent!

2) (after opening it and popping it in) Halo killer? Hah!

3) (realising you opened it and can't return it) *harakiri*

Yeah, I dunno, Jim. I'm all for self-aware humor, but the gameplay in that video looked beyond bland.

Ugh, the name sucks, change it. The graphics are bleh, it doesn't even look "comicky". And it seems like they only stay in one panel, can they rip pages from the comic? Can they move to another panel or another page?

I was excited for this solely because of this concept but this trailer is just...bad. Really...bad. Oh well, always good to save my money I guess.

I'm still not sure what to think about this one. I'm a sucker for metafictional awareness, and the voiceover sounds like the male lead might give it at least a modicum of personality, but the trailer makes it look like they took Comix Zone's main gimmick and slapped it onto a rather generic-looking brawler. What I'd really like to see is Comix Zone-esqe game that fully embraced the concept of being within a comic book. Gameplay elements and environments inspired by, and making fun of, the various genres of comics throughout the decades. Pulp horror comics, noir mystery, superheroes, heck maybe even newspaper funnies. That could really take the self-aware humor to the next level.

So basically, two big ideas: either a re-imagining of Comix Zone or a Deadpool game. The thought of a game based on my favorite fourth-wall breaking ADD-afflicted merc gives me special tingly feeling.s
