Quantcast

Ultimate Mortal Kombat coming to DS photo

What you see above is Sub-Zero kicking Scorpion in the forehead, in the same way that Hushgush kicks chavs in the forehead, every chance he gets. It also happens to be a mock-up (trailer below shows the action on the top scrren) of the upcoming Ultimate Mortal Kombat, headed to the DS in November. Ed Boon, in an interview with IGN, promises an arcade-accurate rendition of UMK3, which will come with Puzzle Kombat. Lovable chaps, that Midway.

As someone who grew up on the Mortal Kombat franchise, I'm delighted by the prospect of having my childhood re-packaged, re-processed, and re-sold to me. I'm also kind of disappointed that it's MK3, as oppposed to say, Armageddon. I don't mean to say that MK3 was bad -- it was actually the exact opposite. But, if you're going to port a Mortal Kombat game, why not the one with the entire cast?

Whether I like it or not, Boon also has an answer for that: "I'm not entirely sure we would be able to fit all of MK Armageddon on a DS cartridge." Well, if you cut out Kart Kombat and Konquest, I'm sure you kould have. But enough whining about a game I'm not going to get -- let's look at the positives here, shall we?

First of all, Midway doesn't seem like they're going to try to shoehorn touch-screen equivalent of waggle controls into UMK:

"We are also working on some ideas for the touch screen. However, since the player's hands will be busy with the direction pad and the attack buttons, we probably won't do something crazy like having the player touch the screen for punches and kicks."

Oh thank God.

Also, online play will be either local or via WiFi. Boon also mentioned that the original team (minus, unfortunately, John Tobias, who left Midway in 1999) will be working on the DS version. For optimists, this means that the possibility of sloppiness is relatively low. In any case, read the rest of the IGN interview over here, check out the gallery bleow, and hit the jump for a short teaser.

[Thanks to Reeper for the tip, and to huge props to Atheistium for getting out of the cage long enough for the 'shop]

Touch Screen should be used for those block breakings and Fatalities...

I also grew up on the MK series, countless hours were spent on MKII but it doesn't hold a torch to SFII Turbo. Despite the 1billion Street Fighter games, I can only hope that this MK game does well and Capcom wish to coin it in some more riding on it's success.

People don't realize that we keep Lauren in the cage to protect them from her vicious leg humping instinct.

It's not cruel, it is for the safety of this commuity.

Didn't Ultimate MK3 have a roster of like, 30 guys? That's what I thought.

As much as I loved this on xbla, there just wasn't enough to keep me coming back. Though I feel as if a portable version could definitely revamp my interest for at least another purchase. As long as I know most of the original Midway guys are handling it, it can't be f'ed in the a.

MK Trilogy was horrible, broken, and a novelty. Armageddon too, was pretty bad. Infinites for every character. And just because they were in the game didn't mean they were they way they should be.

UMK 3 was a rare piece of brilliance from modern Midway. It stands with the best competitive 2D fighters of all time! Glad it's coming to DS. I love this game.

I am so pumped about this. Online MK3 on a portable? I'm so there. Not to mention that this was the best MK to date IMO.
I loved trilogy but they fucked up some of my favorite characters' specials in trilogy.

Online MK on a portable is pretty sweet. And the DS actually has a decent D-Pad unlike the 360's.

Why would anyone want Armageddon on their DS? Armageddon sucked, hard. Sorry, I wanted to love it as an MK fan, but reality has it's way of bringing your head out of the clouds with a well placed kick to the balls, several of them in fact. The game was just bad. Gameplay was a dumbed down version of Deadly Alliance/Deception and still broken, too many copy and past moves/fighting styles/weapons/etc., the Kreate-A-Fatality system sucked and only was created so they wouldn't have to come up with new fatalities for everyone, Kreate-A-Fighter was bland and bare bones, you couldn't even select from all of the moves just a hand full, etc.

Kreate-A-Fatality really pissed me off though, it's an insult to fans of MK. There are only a handful of actual fatalities while the rest of the moves are simple punches, kicks, and transitional moves. They should have given everyone their own fatalities, even if they were just recycled from the older games, and made the Kreate-A-Fatality system the new Brutality system.
