UK Interactive Entertainment chairman Andy Payne has some opinions that loyalist gamers aren't going to like, sharing his belief that Sony and Nintendo should stop making consoles and instead focus on creating games for the mobile gaming market. Oh dear.
"I think it would be a massive relief to both Sony and Nintendo to become content-only," he said. "Right now, they might not even know it. You know that thing where you take drugs and you think it's the best thing in the world? Then you get off them and go, 'What was I doing?'
"Imagine any Mario or Zelda property being on the iPhone or an Android phone. They'd get £10 or £15 for it, because people would want to pay to have it on their phone. They would. And that would be amazing. And Sony's content is amazing. I mean, Uncharted ... it's just brilliant! I'm not knocking those guys, because they really do make fantastic games. And when we kind of get that bit over, wouldn't it be refreshing to have Nintendo really making stuff for the iPhone, Android, and all the other stuff that's around?"
I think Gameloft's success has demonstrated that people will pay for experiences that mimic games such as Uncharted, and I actually do think it would pay for Nintendo and Sony to stop being so proud and make some valid iOS/Android games. That won't happen anytime soon, but they'd make some mad cheddar doing it.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Either way, kind of a very wild idea to even happen to work under Apple.
Plus some games are better on consoles, even if you could play Fallout 4 on your phone, it will have to either reduce content or it will fill your phone of choice.
Plus @Namodacranks the original question was based at Sony and Nintendo releasing on the mobile market. Personally Id rather there were no exclusives and I could play with my controller of choice.
.....as in stupid.
This is sarcasm btw. Dont jump all over me.
Except for the red ring dig. I mean that! On my third 360
"but Sony to go software-only? They really do not make much internally besides God of War."
You must be smoking the same good stuff as the guy from the UK. Where can I get this stuff?
Nintendo as a content-creator is on thing. Sega went that way, and at one time that was unthinkable. Nintendo is a game company. Sony, like Microsoft, is a multi-media company, in which the game console is a Trojan horse to get all kinds of entertainment content and services into your home. In the 90's the PS was a game system with a limited business plan. In today's world, while gaming is still a lucrative business, the console serves as a gateway for many of the company's various offerings.
That that point is glossed over/missed doesn't exactly inspire me with confidence in Andy Payne's business foresight. Or there was some serious concern trolling going on from deeply vested mobile developers (whose paycheck depends on the mobile game genre expanding/maturing).
Stupid shit is puked into our mouths by every mother bird in the industry every day, but its only shit like this, shit that gamers can perceive as a threat, that gets the reaction.
Nintendo not so much, not that I don't think the games would sell on other platforms, it's just that I think Nintendo would cease to be Nintendo. Most of their games are designed around their hardware.
news flash, not everyone has an iphone or an android phone.
they are EXPENSIVE!!!
I bought a wii second hand because i can't afford those flashy things.
and unchartered 3 on the iphone? am i the only one who finds this a tad unrealistic?
Idiot.
SCE Worldwide Studios. Sony owns Media Molecule, Guerrilla Games, Polyphony Digital, Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, Zipper, SCE San Diego, and several others. In my opinion, they are the best publisher/development group in the business, and I'm sure most would agree that they are one of the best. Besides that, they own a ton of licenses that other studios work on, like Resistance and Ratchet & Clank.
Sony could definitely make money with those properties on other devices.
Uncharted on a touch screen only handheld? Fuck that, Fuck that, Fuck it.
This guy is an idiot.
Errrm (blush) Its Jims use of the word console that misslead me
He also said (from the source)
"Right now, they might not even know it. You know that thing where you take drugs and you think it's the best thing in the world? Then you get off them and go, 'What was I doing?'"
Yeah, maybe it's time for you to come to that realization as well, Andy.
I like mobile gaming, and a game could possibly be made that works, but a touchscreen just isn't made for some things. I doubt I would have any fun playing Uncharted or Mario on a mobile.
All was meaning was that SCE did not make a lot of stuff, but I seem to be absolutely wrong after some research because it looks like Media Molecule, Naughty Dog, and Sucker Punch are INSIDE SCE.
My bad.
fing smart phones
Speaking of which, I'll gladly take my 3DS and the upcoming Vita over a glorified single-screen DS, thank you.
Uncharted on a touch-based device with no buttons or analog control? No way Jimbo. Kindly leave your iOS fanboyism out of your germalism.
Zelda, Mario, Killzone, Socom, Uncharted, Smash Brothers, Metroid, Mario Party....oh wait, no I don't.
This guy right here? Yeah that guy, he me laugh because he is not even in touch with himself.
But wait, doesn't Sony already make phones? OMG! They even have a "psphone". So they know exactly how you can't make money on those things.
"You know that thing where you take drugs and you think it's the best thing in the world? Then you get off them and go, 'What was I doing?"
Take notes kids. If you take drugs and make mobile games then your opinions will be validated by major videogame websites.
Also Sony is already making major phone planes with the Experia Play so this guy doesn't even know what he's talking about.
All I have to say to these clowns is...
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Nintendo aren't going to bother with the chump change that mobiles would net them, they deal in BIG games and lucrative hardware. BIG games that phones could not possible sustain or run worth a damn.
You have your corner mobile gaming, now stay there.
So Jim, you'd be willing to compromise demand for your own hardware by putting your software on a direct competitor's platform just to make some short-term ''mad cheddar''?
Don't quit your day job!
