UK to get PS3 game vending machines photo

Japan loves its vending machines, that is definitely one thing I learned from my week in Tokyo. It also loves putting jelly in cans and tricking you into thinking it's a drink, but that's another story. The point is, Sony is soon to be sharing that vending love with the United Kingdom, allowing you to buy PlayStation 3 games in the least personal way possible.

These touch screen machines will sell DVDs, Blu-ray movies, PS3 games and direct downloads to memory cards. Dubbed PoP Entertainment Vending Machines, the new toyboxes represent a deal between Sony and Universal Pictures.

When the machines launch, they will be packing 150 movies including recent titles like Hellboy II and Mama Mia -- truly the double bill of champions. Downloadable music and movies for SD cards will also be available.

While similar machines are available in the US, this is quite new and sparkly for we Brits, who usually have to make do with buying our goods from some scabby bitch in Woolworths. Anything that lets me buy entertainment without having to deal with arseholes is fine by me.

The game vending seems a bit odd and impersonal...I guess video game store employees suck anyway - but if they made vending machines that dispensed DLC to memory cards for all game systems, I'd fully endorse it. Because that's the kind of pull I have.

But how can one have a vending machine for a console which has no games?

Perhaps it will vend Talladega Nights?

Finally I can buy Mama Mia without the worry of being judged! This is a great day!

Reminds me of being in barcelona, where they have GIANT vending machines. I seriously thought it was a closed shop with a cash machine attached. Took me ages to work out.

Surely they'll be bloody expensive, RRP for the games? Won't be using them if that's the case.

Oh, and I've been avoiding "scabby bitches" for a long time. Use the internet!

Countdown till some damn fool tries to drag the machine away on a chain?

Too right, theyd better chain/nail/weld these buggers down well.

PS best thing i saw in a japanese vending machine was a tiny bottle of whiskey on straw bedding inside a clear-plastic drinks can container.

Syn's right, this has disaster written all over it.

Plus if the game is scratched or damaged, who do I exchange it in with? Some 1 800 number with the Customer Service across the globe?

In the UK? this has fail written all over it. They'll be horrendously overpriced and constantly vandalised by chavs.

All this talk of chavs and vandalism is way off the mark.

I'm not quite a chav but I know it will be me getting drunk and putting a traffic cone through one of these things. I'll make it look like an accident, it'll be nuts.

Actually, thinking about it... When I do actually get drunk (depending on whether these are outside?) I will no doubt wake up with NFL 09, Singstar and one of those basketball games and wonder what the hell went wrong.

They already have these style vending machines in airports.

I can go to my local airport and buy a PSP, DS, DVD player, Xbox, etc.

@CALkulon,

very true. I think I added the "lucky" part as I didn't want to seem rude. Last thing I want is some loud arse mutha dropping a turd on my face when I'm trying to catch some Z's by the pool.

Pool.... heh. I wish.

Lets see with online retailers you still have to deal with the UPS guy sometimes.

Yep this will effectively eliminate having to deal with those pesky humans for some gamers

Fopp tried this, they had a hole in the wall type thing so your could drunkenly buy cd's at 4am.
Didn't last long but then neither did fopp. Damn you HMV and Virgin (or Zavvi now your post-op) i liked Fopp.

The Red Box movie rental stuff here in the states does fairly well, they install them inside 24 hour Wal-Marts and McDonalds.... and probably some other places. Haven't heard of any being broken into yet, though I'm sure it has happened somewhere I don't think it is common. Of course, seeing how long it takes to get the DVD once you select it(like 30 second or so for it to appear in the dispenser) they may actually store them back in another room with an automated selector so if you broke the machine nothing worthwhile would happen. The actual selection display is just an LCD interface with multiple lists of the available titles.

Will they have a method of checking id? Or will they not have any M rated games?

Either way, a very novel idea.
