UK teenagers blame games and films for knife crime, take after parents photo

I've said it before and I'll say it again -- children have learned. They have learned from their parents, from teachers and most importantly, from the media, that videogames can be blamed for everything that is wrong in the world, so the finger doesn't have to be pointed at themselves. Now it's getting silly, with an entire panel of UK teenagers blaming videogames for knife crime. I am sure that opinion is uninfluenced, too.

Whereas US criminals have access to guns, British people unfortunately have to make do with knives when they want to kill someone for liking a different sports team. The only reason they use knives, however, is because of those evil videogames and other media. Videogames invented knife crime, you see, and that is why it happens.

"Ex-offender Bob Croxton, who’s now an outreach worker with Liverpool’s Criminal Information Bureaux, said his nephew had been stabbed to death at the age of 17," explains a report. "He asked the panel the best way to tackle knife crime and was told raising the age on films and computer games would stop young people committing crime. It said parents should take care of their children and stop them hanging around the streets all day and night."

Yes. Raising the age of violent media will make all knives in Liverpool suddenly turn into small pink penguins that sing "Come On Eileen" when asked, while teenagers will stop being the glue-sniffing, hooded, illiterate little spunkworms that they most assuredly are.

Children have learned.

surely playing violent videogames would be keeping them off the streets? i guess they muyst all be playing GTA on their PSP's while they murder old ladies in the night.

I know a couple of old bill. They both tell me how much gun crime goes unreported in the media these days in London (lots and lots). Knives are so 2006, Jim.

FUN FACT: Up North we say 'charva' instead of 'chav'.

This is almost non-news now.

Report when something _isn't_ blames on videogames instead.

Since we are talking about adolescents in the UK, it's probably safe to say it was the alcohol talking. Once they sober up (in 5-10 years) I'm sure they will feel differently.

War has changed.

Burberry-tagged soldiers carry Burberry-tagged weapons,
use Burberry-tagged gear.

Alcopops inside their bodies enhance and regulate their actions.

When asked to explain these actions, the response is unanimous: "It's not us, it's teh games!!11!"

War has changed.

When responsibility can be endlessly deferred, war becomes routine.

I'm confused by their logic... if the kids are hanging around on the streets day and night committing knife crimes, when exactly are they playing the videogames that teach them the knife crimes in the first place?

Which kids have more access to these violent video games? Rich kids who can afford them yes? Then why do we not hear how Prince William has stabbed up one of his butlers after a particularly heavy sesh on GTA?

Its all about social standings and whats seen and encouraged as being acceptable in these circles.

Amongst the disaffected youth of today its cool to know nothing and be cocky and violent and as they get older the violence escalates, and because they know nothing they are dragged into crime.

The thing is that whole scene is self perpetuating so you could take films and games away and it would still just trundle on.

It all boils down to the parents, and the fact is, alot of these kids parents are crap and uninvolved with their children. Infact alot of them are products of the same scene, ending up with children at a young age then taking the 1st opportunity to dump them onto the streets so they can have more time to themselves and try to re-catcher their misspent youth.

i didn't start smoking pot because a video game portrayed it as the thing to do,i didn't throw stolen bikes off of roofs because of mario or sonic. in fact at that time was the snes/genesis era and i did more bad things at that time then i ever did in my life. i did it due to the acceptance of my peers and those cool older kids who i wanted to hang out with, no video game has that much power as the people we wish to be accepted by. these kids who blame video games are their excuse just don't want to lose the friends they have by blaming them. i had a real good mom too who was there for everything, so sometimes its NOT the parents but the social influence to do the "bad" thing, be the "bad boy" and get the girls, i did and i always had a girlfriend. it's the people we surround ourselves with who we choose to shape us. if i only knew back then what i know today.

In Far Cry 2 I started clearing outpost only with my machete after a while. Not only did it save my weapons from degrading, it also felt awesome.

I somehow felt I needed to add that to this discussion.

A)Wrong
B)Right

I also don't understand what is that whole chavs thing in UK. I'm kind of uneducated there but it's funny to think that UK have problems with knife killing(WTF, never heard of gunpowder) and US with gun killing while Canada got none of those.

So basically, they're blaming it on everything when the real issues lie with society in general. A society which is continually discouraging parental and generally children's responsibility. A society which still believes a softly softly approach is better than punishing offenders properly.

Oh, and they also seem to have learned a valuable lesson from our government - is something is wrong, there needs to be either a tax hike or an increase in the age limit. Great logic folks.

Jim what have you done, I was buttering a piece of toast when the knife turned into a small pink penguin that sung "Come on Eileen".

The problem with knife crime/chavs boils very simply down to bad parenting, a police force that steadfast refuses to set foot outside of thier Vauxhall Astras to patrol the streets of Britains big cities and the void left behind after Thatchers government stripped the country of any industry as a way of beating the unions leaving us as a country of low income shop and office workers. All of this has served to create a sub-class that has no sense of repsect or responsability.

I personally think the age of voting should be raised to 25. This will prevent ignorant, easily swayed, zero-opinionated (yet highly-opinionated), oiks from ruining the next generation of governance.

Not that the parents need any help.

Really sad news, if kids have to sunk to this level. I think its a case of the pitchfork brigade seeking this kind of validation to get their own way. From their mouths its white noise, but from kids someone might listen apparently.

I think its a real shame that the social order in the U.K has broken down to these crumbs. Kids just want to belong and be cool, and will sell their soul for street credibility.

How do we heal U.K society. Stopping giving away free housing to those who see fit to get knocked up so easily might be a good start. The U.K government has meddled in family life so much that you can't even discipline kids anymore. Is it any wonder these kids are fearless of the law, and so create gangs of clueless me too hordes that rob folk and hurt others.

Lack of discipline and respect for anyone or anything = social disorder. When our government come down off their high horse and admit they were wrong, and restore the powers of discipline to parents, only then will things get batter. It all starts at home.

And like I always said when guns were banned in the U.K, crims would just use something more accessible, namely knives, hence the high use of them.

Exactly how many games can you name where knives are used. Cooking Mama maybe, more so than something like GoW2. And who would use a knife anyway, when swords do the trick much better? (let alone the fact that in violent games way to kill vary to more creative means).

These kids have been coached, ignore them.

Most UK knife crime offenders only own Fifa, Pro Evo and Need for Speed games anyway, and as far as I know none of them contain knifes.

Ah...chavs, or as they are known more commonly in Liverpool "Scallies". The in-bred, ignorant, violent burberry'd up scum that make me ashamed of my own city.

The thing that frustrates me most about this is they don't even PLAY games they're too busy just hanging round in the streets because even their parents can't stand the sight of them. As mentioned above if somehow they manage to squeeze in a quick session between vandalism, theft and general cockery, they only play football games like FIFA and Pro Evo or equally vapid toss like NFS. I suppose at a stretch the NFS could be blamed for them nicking cars and driving them round near my house at stupid speeds as I lie in bed whispering 'crash, crash crash' under my breath every time I hear the tyres screech.

If we do that we'll also have to limit anyone over the age of sixty from voting; so as to eliminate the senile, "The internet is full of porn! There sure are a lot of ugly people in your neighborhood. Oh, look at that one! What smells like mustard? Oh, my glaucoma just got worse! The President is a Demmy-crat!" old voters.

But in principle I agree, I'd just institute a knowledge based barrier instead of an age based one.

It's pretty naive to think that media of any kind doesn't have any influence on people. Everything we take into our lives has some kind of influence. That's life. Get over it. The issue is how much, and the degree of it.

"They also said pressure from friends and family members being involved in crime and gangs forced children into carrying weapons."

Video games are apparently on par with the pressure of blood lines in terms of influence confirmed.
