UK store using fighting games to sell clothes photo

I used to live in the United Kingdom, and in all my years as a British resident, not once was I considered posh enough to go into a Harvey Nichols. The clothes store is quite upper class and full of designer nonsense, but at least the firm's marketing department has a sense of humor, ripping off Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat to promote its latest sale.

A collection of images which parody fighting games have been created for Harvey Nicks' big sale, and they look ... well ... kind of disturbing, actually. You'd think sexy fighter ladies would be somewhat enticing, but they just creep me out. That's even before you consider that these girls are selling designer clothes, which means they are naturally emaciated, starvling skeletor women. Not sexy at all.

That said, it's a fun collection of images. I'm still not posh enough to enter the store though.

In retrospect, I'm surprised the creators of He-Man never resorted to "She-Skeletor" once during its run.

Yarr I saw this in a Metro this week on the way to work, while it's nice advertising, I think they've targeted the wrong audience, since (many) women won't get the Mortal Kombat reference.

pretty apt image IMO. if you've ever seen the carnage at the annual NEXT half price sale in the UK you'll know why.

Her arms stretching like that isn't actually photoshopped. Her lack of a calcium and potassium rich diet has yieled strange side effects. :(

This is great publicity for gaming - it grants legitimacy to gaming as part of upscale adult culture. Whether or not the target audience recognizes the specific move references is beside the point.

I agree with justice, totally the wrong audience for this type of ad. At least in my experience, women don't enjoy fighting games. I know there are some who do, but I've never met them. My girlfriend for instance, loves video games but when I showed her these ads, she just rolled her eyes.

I feel bad for the lady on the right. Well, all of the women in general. Fighting in heels can't feel good. D:

She's at least wearing a Primal Fear shirt there. I mean, it was a semi-shitty game, but the reference is cool.

Also, the gorilla shirt is from designer Christopher Kane's Spring 09 line:

what a waste of an ad. if there was a venn diagram depicting the crossover between girls who play games, and girls who shop at harvey nichols, it would resemble uma thurmans face.
