UK politician: Games cause kids to lose their childhood photo

Former Conservative Party leader and nondescript politician Iain Duncan Smith has spoken out against videogames with one of the more dramatic little bits of scaremongering we've seen. As well as mentioning the violence of games like Grand Theft Auto, the famously boring MP also stated that gaming can cause children to lose their childhoods.

"We are driving children to lose their childhood," states the grey man, "and some video games are incredibly violent, like Grand Theft Auto. They are meant to be 18 but nobody cares what it says on the label."

I'm guessing that by "losing their childhood," he means that children spend too much time playing videogames and not enough time playing outside where they can be abducted by pedophiles. If you ask me, and you didn't, going outside is overrated, especially with mad old Conservative MPS running around out there.

The world will become a better place when the industry makes the perfect balancer - Pedo Hunter 20XX, which is essentially Deer Hunter, but in a city and Gary Glitter is the 'ultimate catch'.

outside is overated, when i was a kid i used to hang round my estate, just sitting around doing nothing.

at least now im sitting here actually doing something i like, and i can just call one of my mates to come round and play games with.

im not saying being outside is bad or anything, but ive taken all those hours i wasted just sitting around in a park to sitting in my rom having fun so now the only times i go out is when i actually have things to do i.e. work, college and social shit.

i grew up with videogames, and led what seemed like a perfectly normal childhood; hanging around with friends, playing in the street etc, but my youngest brother spends pretty much all his time on his 360. he's playing with his friends, but to be honest it doesn't seem entirely right, so i can see exactly why some would hold IDS's opinion.

of course when you start dropping GTA and 18 rated games into the argument willy nilly nobody is going to really take it seriously.

Wow, he acknowledges and dismisses the ratings system in the same breath. Most of 'em don't even get the first part done.

It's almost as if they don't trust parents to raise their kids properly and make good decisions on what games their kids play. Almost as if the State must step in and be a Nanny for all the children of the UK. If only there was a term for such an invasive and presumptuous government.

He's not too off. I mean, unbalance is the issue here, not just gaming. If a kid is spending all his or her time in front of a screen, then there's a problem. Likewise, if a kid is spending too much time outside, then there's a problem. But I highly doubt think children are "loosing" their childhood. He's exaggerating a fact about kid's playing videogames.

When you think about it, simply existing eventually makes kids lose their childhoods. Let's protect our kids from existing!

Don't lose their childhood. They just have a childhood that includes gaming.

Times are changing, and the vintage MP's need to understand that. Still, if I wanted to put a reason to why kids may not be getting out as much/live vastly different lifestyles to the previous generations, I'd look first to every child from the age of about eight having a mobile phone before my eyes were drawn towards video games.

This man fails, he is in part right, parents are still too idiots to see ratings, but still the world is different now, is not like 50 years, each time has it´s social "cancer", rock was like that in their origins, cartoons in the 80´s too, anime also, and videogames are not exception, so his opinion is invalid because is not about saying this thing is wrong, is about know about it and know what to do...

And cases like him or our "beloved" lawyer from Florida always happens

Actually Iain, childhood in a town with 50% unemployment and a devastated national industry (your Party's fault, BTW) was pretty sucky until I got an Amstrad CPC464 at age 9. Elite, Marsport, Hitchiker's Guide, Starglider... good memories. I've met many of my best friends through a shared love of gaming, and my (usually) fulfilling job relies upon the computing skills that I first learned whilst writing totally awesome Defender clones in BASIC.

Anyway, won't these ickle children need all those murderous, violent tendencies for when your Party sends them off to Iraq/Iran/Afghanistan (delete as applicable) in a few years? You foul, soulless Tory scumbag.

Do I think parents these days are smart about raising their children? Hell no!

Do I think the government can do better? For the love of God, certainly not!

In fact I'm sure we can all safely agree that whatever harm parents might cause to their children through allowing video games the government will manage to cause harm ten times faster or on a level that is ten times worse through something else.

Parent's Guide To Videogames:

Step 1: Understand the rating before purchasing
Step 2: Turn the TV off after excessive play
Step 3: Take the controller away
Step 4: If above steps do not work, stop trying to blame video games for your failure as a parent.

Aren't "Conservatives" against providing public schools to children?

What is more destructive to childhood and children than condemning them to ignorance, poverty and servility?

It makes me sad to think how terrible the current conservative campaign is and knowing they will probably win. We can't carry on like this? Ok, how about voting for one of the other parties? What's the worst that could happen?

I kind of agree with him. It's just so comfortable to sit in a basement and play games all day that sometimes it's kind of hard to motivate myself to do anything more social or productive. Of course if there weren't games there would still be TV, movies, and books.

I was born with blue baby syndrome and had to have several heart surgeries as a kid. Growing up with a heart condition pretty much limited how much outside activity I could handle. This also made it hard to find friends. I wasn't playing basketball... or riding a skateboard... or even as I got older, racing dirtbikes like my other friends. It was hard to find things in common with others kids, but videogames saved my childhood. Especially since everyone was into the Pokemon Craze back in the 90s. As I got older, I found things in common with others that I could do, like playing guitar.

By the way, who can really define what a "normal" childhood is? As if "normalcy" is something that can be weighed and measured. :P

in my opinion, videogames both made and gave me my childhood. when i pop in actraiser or ff3 its like the greatest trip down memory lane that i have even known. i reminisce about the times i stayed at a friends house and play super mario world all night long or earthworm jim. its a drag when non-gamers try to dredge up a bunch of facts when they have zero hands on experience. im not a lawyer, so dont expect me to be giving out legal advice anytime soon. i only wish the same applied to ugly ass bald headed white dudes

Some of my best moments in my life were my childhood gaming moments. Playing Final Fantasy 7 or getting my friends who were Nintendo fanboys to play Final Fantasy Tactics for the first time and bringing them into the light of pure gaming brilliance. Or other times when you had 4 player splitcreen 007 Goldeneye matches and it was very intense. There are many more moments like this but that is all I will share this day.

It really differs between individuals, some things effects others differently. I had known kids in my past that didn't care for video games or liked other forms of entertainment, yet I don't see people bitching about those other hobbies, some being a lot more harmful than video games could ever dream of being.

When I was 12 I had GTA 3, and then 13 with Vice city, in my PS2 and I loved going around, doing all the missions and going on random killing sprees, it was great fun.

My parents taught me the values of life and what is and isn't acceptable/legal behaviour in our society.

I'm now 22 and I have a girlfriend and a great job. The first and only time I've ever hit anyone is when a crack addict tryed to mug me and my girlfriend when we went on holiday to New york. I punched him twice to get to back off and then we left.

THATS IT! So to you, Iain Duncan, I say fuck you.

There's at least 2 billion people on this fare planet that play games with the mature rating and about 3-10% of those people are violent and 0.3% of those people are violent due to video games. But overall, both of these groups are violent, first and foremost, because there was something already the matter with them.

THAT'S IT!!!!!! YOU MORON!

I get what old man politician meant with, to him, the violence and language of more brutal games showing things to kids that make them "grow up" faster than they need to...don't agree but I get what his perspective is...but all I could think was of Tom Hanks in Big.
Like videogames are that gypsy machine he wished on. Kid one day, all grown up the next. Hey. you stole my childhood!
Now there's something for the back of the box with the next Grand Theft Auto. "It will drop your balls and gray your hair."
I'd buy a game claiming that...even if they're too late.

I remember as kid when we where shoved outside it mostly consisted of us standing outside a shop, sitting on a bench, sitting on a wall, leaning against a wall and playing with a ball for 20 minutes before being completely bored out of our minds again.

Yet even though they're the ones who wanted us outside in the first place, adults at the time would complain about "us kids" "lurking around" being up to no good. :/
