UK newspaper offers money for game violence stories photo

Just when I thought the British media couldn't get more pathetic, a newspaper finds some way to both surprise and sicken me. A national paper is offering "hundreds of pounds" in exchange for stories from the public about how videogames turned them to a life of crime. This is the full advert. as it appears on a "talent" Web site for actors and actresses:

"A national newspaper wants your story and will pay hundreds of pounds to the right person.

Write a few lines about how computer games turned you to crime and if it's something we like, we'll call you straight back."

Tanya Byron said we need to stop blaming videogames. That is what she said. She suggested we need to stop the mass panic that surrounds games and actually get people educated, but she got ignored because that's not news. Instead, her report has been used as an excuse to not educate, but actively propagate the exact kind of scaremongering she wanted to see ended. If I were Byron, I'd be feeling pretty sick right about now, since all her hard work has been perverted by a bunch of braindamaged, subhuman parasites to promote the opposite of what she'd intended.

Actually, I don't have to be Byron to feel sick at this. Anybody with a shred of integrity would be disgusted by this grotesque little move. Offering actors money to claim that videogames turned them into criminals is possibly the most harmful and nasty scheme I've seen cooked up by the media yet. They say videogames encourage violence? What is this paper doing, if not that?

And the worst thing is, the paper will get its little story, and yet more people will completely ignore the intentions of the Byron Report. I can't even work up the bile for this anymore ... I'm simply ashamed to live in the same country as these scumbags.

Continue: More Utterly pathetic stories

I love how I get accused of doing something that every single blogger does as if I came up with the idea of blogging. Are some people really that desperate to discredit me that they'll literally accuse me of inventing blogging?

Is that what this is now? Now I've invented blogging? People are really reaching now.

JIM STERLING INVENTED BLOGGING: MORE AT ELEVEN!

It's not news. Jack Thompson has been doing it secretly for years, feeding thousands of novel writers.

OH MY GAWSH! Jim Sterling is so outraged! That is not conducive to our image as gamers!

Jim! Why you you gotta burn so brightly with the flames of righteous fury? Don't you know only calm attitudes provoke change? Seriously, you are making us look bad! Also, I think anyone who's angry sucks! My vestigial genitalia can't handle such emotions!

@FatBologna - FAIL

People who come to Destructoid come because news is given to us in a fresh, entertaining and fun way. We post, bullshit and make goofy jokes about games and discuss gaming in general. Its a lot of opinions and we all know that. No one here really cares about what is original and what is not. We care about games and the off chance to make a friend or two online. Not, who came up with what and who didn't. Wave that big dick ego elsewhere son.

Me, I post comments on Destructoid because I'm bored at work and its fun to see what other gamers have to say. When I get home, I game. Thats what I do, day in, day out. Work, post comments about games with other cool gamers, and then go home and game. Weekends, I'll mix in drinking with friends and more gaming.

Some people like to make life a little tougher than it is.

btw, this triggered me to start a thread about the trolling of Sterling.

Also, Sterling's opinions are all wrong and he doesn't ever play videogames.

Sounds about right.

I mean this is going to go on for the next 20-40 years or so.

Neither the film industry or the press (writing) industry likes teh vidja gems. I mean, NOT trying to divert people from them with dumb shit like this would be surprising. After all, they're a threat since they're an emergent competing industry, and by god, they'll do anything they can to ruin it if at all possible.

I don't understand. There are OTHER gaming sites now? Dtoid is the only place I visit. Therefore, all I see on the front page is new and fresh.

So I was playing Super Mario Bros one day and my mom was all like
'Now, now TC you've been playing that game for 7 hours straight, I think you should give your eyes a rest'
So I was like
'BITCH FUCK YOU I DO WHAT THE FUCK I WANT'
And I smacked her upside the head. With a shovel.
So then I went down to the hood and scored some crack, shot some suckers and sodomised a goat.

And that's how video games caused my descent into the criminal underworld.

Moneys plz.

The ad says they'll take applications from people 0 - 60 years old.

I think the majority of their stories will come from people at one of the far ends of that spectrum, or at least people who's mental age oscillates between those points.

Yup Jim did invent blogging, just like I invented the question mark, look it up, I totally did. I don't think Jim ever claimed to be a "journalist." A blogger is not someone who reports the news like you would get on your local news broadcasts, they take those stories and give their own thoughts on it. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think I am.

In regards to the article, it really is sickening. And yea not actually requireing the story to be true just shows how much of this you'd be able to believe. The people who would believe a story like this probably think the Jerry Springer show is a documentary show.

I wonder if I could get in on this. I'd probably send them a huge story, which would be Go Ask Alice, only with "drugs" replaced with "Mortal Kombat". And from what I can tell, they probably wouldn't fact check it or anything.

BTW, how much would "hundreds of pounds" convert to in U.S.A. money?

I agree that it's probably some supermarket tabloid type crap like The Sun. It'll appear right next to the story about Victoria Beckham's lopsided boobs and the latest pigman sighting...

The Destructoid community needs to create some new form of entertainment, pass it off to the younger generation as "cool" and/or "hip", thereby making it the new scapegoat for the media.

Congrats on creating blogging, Jim. That's a pretty high honor. Sheesh. No, I think it's cool that trolls like fat_whatever do dumb shit like accusing a blogger of blogging. I mean, the news in this post is a downer and reading his remarks actually made me laugh, so that's a plus. I thought everyone knew what blogging was at this point. Ah well...

Anyway.

As far as the story, its sad that someone would go that far to get anti-gaming propaganda. Lets just hope it doesn't amount to anything. I'd like to believe that I live in a world where people couldn't get away with that kind of shit, but I think we have a bit more time due in the evolutionary oven before that happens, I suppose.

Destructoid should start a letter writing campaign and submit letters to this newspaper about how videogames saved their lives. It probably won't change anything though.

@FatBologna/small penis -

Like, OH - MY - GOD, you dissagree with someone on the internet?! That's like, front page news there! Stop the presses, somebody on the intern-netz doesn't agree with someone, and doesn't like them!

I like how you think that your opinion of Jim Sterling is the end all, be all opinion, nobody else can think or feel differently. I like how you dissmiss everything everone else has said because you claim that you've "been here longer than most". I like how you claim that Jim is stroking his ego by making a lot of posts about biased, fabricated, negative attacks on games, like nobody else in the blogging world does *cough*gamepolitics*cough*. I like how YOU try to boost YOUR ego by calling Jim on something we're all "blind to". I like how you tell Jim to "go get his own stories", where in the flying fuck do you think most of the other writers here get their stories from? The Twilight Zone? Loch Ness? The dark side of the moon?

Guess what, I don't fucking agree with you! ZOMG, a dissenting opinion of a dissenting opinion, one of the sheep has wandered from your herd! Your internet revolution will fall apart! Communism!

Ugh, the Media'll do anything to blame everything on games, won't they?

And yet Movies are fine, wholesome entertainment. Never mind the shoot-outs, sex, and violence, those are fine. Have anything in a game, even if it's rated M or whatever the non-ESRB equivalent is, some kid will get a parent to buy the thing without looking, the mom will see something bad, and heads will roll. Nevermind that the kid actively lied to you, games are evil! They'll corrupt society! We'll all die because of them!

Bloody retards. Hurry up and pull your heads out of your asses, it's better outside.

@FatBologna's complaint
Idiots like this guy are incredibly annoying. I run a Dtoid-like (for lack of a better term) blog for MST3K, and I have occasionally gotten a dipshit complaining about my reposting information. Frankly, they can go fuck themselves, then write a letter to CNN because they report on stories reported by other stations. Idiot.

Anyway, this story is the epitome of facepalm.jpg. OMFG, I have nothing rational to say about this.

Oh BTW, I'd love someone to go ahead with this and secretly film the meeting and on purpose tell a story full of holes and misconceptions and no evidence to test wether the newspaper tests the story or scrutinises it or helps aid in evolving a story they would like.

Then someone can put it on the net and show everyone how the newspapers do not actualy care for true facts and guide people along with what story they actualy want to pay for wether it is true or false.

It would be a nice exposa and great if someone could pull it off and show them up at there own game.
