UK magazine Play calls PS Home 'boring' photo

I'm going to divulge a little secret: I've never been the least bit interested in Home. I've grasped the fact from the beginning that Sony may present some cool new innovations within it, but it just doesn't look like my cup of tea. In a recent report from UK magazine Play, they express a little bit of what I have already quietly thought to myself: Home looks a bit boring.

Having had their hands on the beta for a while now, Play gives their feedback on Sony's version of Second Life (no wonder I feel less than enthused). Two overwheming impressions jump at you from their first impressions: lots of downloading, and lots of solitude. From the post:

Once we’d overcome this process, we were in Home Square. Eerily, this
hub of Home activity was 100% deserted. Around us, tons of advertising posters for Sony products were hanging on the walls, while huge video
screens donned trailers of the latest Sony products. In all honesty, it was
like walking into some kind of nightmarish, Sony-generated Dystopia.
Home seemed a bit … Orwellian. Hardly an image you want to provide,
when users are discovering it for the first time.

Of course, this makes it sound as if there were nothing but negative impressions, and that in fact is not true. As soon as Home became populated during a Sony press event, Play described that part of the experience very differently, so don't start wringing your hands just yet -- there is hope that the long awaited social tool could be just as wonderful as you were hoping.

Isn't this why they delayed it? Playtesters said it was boring, so they wanted to add new stuff?

I'm with you though, Colette. It seems like nothing more than a convolution of something simple like a Friend List, and then some dildo-free Second Life. No thank you.

I deleted my beta for Home as they were SOOOO slow to bring out anything new and yeah, the levels were deserted; however, if you go when there are get togethers planned (Playstation forums) it was actually pretty fun to walk around and "mingle" if you will.

It could still be a pretty fun way to interact with people and what not but I'm not holding my breath.

I'm sure it'll be better once it's open to the public and everyone has it. I think it will be great for Friday Night Fights and other DToid meetings. So I'll continue to have some optimism ;).

It sure does sound boring... and eerie.

I'm more interested in how other games integrate with home.
the stuff like The warhawk sand table interests me.

Home has always sounded like a boring idea. At best it's a 3D chat room that makes you walk around to launch a game. What's the point?

3d chat room... hooray

I'm really not surprised by this. As someone who has written two reports in college about Second Life, Home truly never appealed to me.

Like the Channels Nintendo offers for the Wii, Home will be a feature I never use on my PS3 (once I break down and buy one). It's as simple as that.

Orwellian you say? Do they have people outside of the system, delivering messages by running around rooftops and grabbing anything that's red? That would be cool.

I agree, sounds and looks kind of dull overall....I get my "gaming community" features from Dtoid, don't need Home.

But I will of course try it out if it's free.

So, Home is boring when there's nobody around. Just as I suspected.

Wait, a limited amount of people testing something designed for a few mil. to run around in seems deserted.

uh...

Isn't that... kind of... obvious?

I'm no Sony fan, but isn't this like having 100 people test an MMO, and then saying "it's really bleak, you rarely see characters."

Awesome...a glorified, clunky menu system plastered with ads everywhere! Wait, not awesome: lame.

I know I'll enjoy it. My own room/house/apartment thing to stock all my trophy whoring and the like. As well I'm sure it will be packed when everyone's using it to go from game to game and talk to others that enjoy the same games.

You really going to tell me that you and the Retro peeps wouldn't absolutely dig hanging out in a Home Mega Man room fitted in Retro goodness, Colette? Or a Castlevania room? I know that probably won't be for some time, if at all, but the possibility will still wipe XBoxes attempt at social networking, I believe. As far as advertising, you can't really bitch if it's free and unobtrusive.

While the concept itself isn't terrible it's pretty obvious Sony is setting themselves up for another miss. I mean, stereotypically the internet is a pretty poor place to interact with strangers on a meaningful level and since that's the basis of Home all I can see is people interacting with their friends in a visual version of MSN and not doing anything interesting with it at all. Who knows, maybe they'll do some mildly interesting things with it that will recoup development costs.

Its not that I have a problem with it, but it seems that there isn't really anything to do in Home apart from take longer to do all the things you could do via a menu system (chat, play games, etc).

It might be fun for a few hours, but then you are basically running around the equivalent of a city in an MMO, reading chat channels and dancing in front of the mailbox.

Best thing for them to do is cut the project off at the knees, stop funding, stop talking about it, and forget that you came up with the stupid idea that people want to sit in a 3d chat room loaded with advertisements on their consoles.

Can someone explain what the point of Home is? I know that to Sony, it is a way to make money, but what is the point from a gamer point of view?

If I want to meet up to play a game, why not meet up in the lobby? If I want to meet people on PSN, why not meet people in a game when I am actually doing something meaningful?

I'm not being hateful, I'm just truly curious what the point of Home is. If it doesn't have a point, I doubt I'll use it more than once.

I think it sounds kinda neat.. the only thing that ever made my ears perk at the Playstation Three was the fact that you can game online for free. And Free > Pay to play. I've never liked the idea of paying a service provider and also paying the company that made my game system. You already pay for internet, why pay extra to game with your pals?

It looks interesting, to say the least. I can't wait to lure an unsuspecting player into my apartment so I can BLAST DEATH METAL into their ears.. ^_^
